Hyundai's Biggest Hit Faces A Big Recall

The Hyundai Tucson is the Korean brand’s cash cow in the US, topping sales charts year after year. In 2025 alone, over 230,000 Tucsons found homes across America.

Turns out, a huge chunk of those Tucsons is making an unexpected return trip to the dealership. Hyundai is recalling 96,310 Tucsons in the US after finding out the instrument cluster can suddenly go dark while you’re driving. The screen does come back, but even a brief blackout of vital info is enough to trigger a safety recall.

What Went Wrong?

The voluntary safety recall covers select 2025 and 2026 Tucson, Tucson Hybrid, and Tucson Plug-in Hybrid models built from June 2024 to May 2026. To be more specific, that’s 39,605 gas-powered Tucsons, 53,886 Hybrids, and 2,819 Plug-in Hybrids.

Hyundai told the NHTSA that a software hiccup can cause the instrument cluster and head-up display to stop communicating. When that happens, both systems hit reset at the same time, and your dash goes blank for a moment.

That leaves drivers in the dark – literally – without a speedometer, fuel gauge, warning lights, or any of the must-see alerts. Hyundai says this ups the risk of a crash since you’re missing the basics while rolling down the road.

The investigation kicked off in July last year after a Tucson Hybrid owner reported their dash going dark intermittently. Hyundai couldn’t pin it down at first, but eventually traced the glitch to sketchy communication between the head-up display wiring and the cluster software.

Fortunately, Hyundai hasn’t seen any crashes, fires, injuries, or fatalities in the US tied to this bug.

Here's What Owners Need To Do

Another piece of good news: no new parts needed for the remedy. Dealers will simply update the instrument cluster software so only the head-up display resets, not the whole dash.

Owners will get letters starting in August, with details on how to book a free fix at their local Hyundai dealer. If your Tucson is hooked up to Hyundai Bluelink, you might even get the update over the air – no dealership trip required. If you already paid to fix this issue, Hyundai will reimburse you – as long as you follow their rules.

For Tucson models built after April 28, 2026, Hyundai said they were already built with the updated software, so they’re in the clear.
