A Third Defender Is Coming to the US, and Stellantis Is Helping Build It

Defender Leads JLR’s New US Strategy

Back in May, Stellantis and JaguarLand Roverquietly shook hands on a Memorandum of Understanding to see what kind of trouble they could get up to together in the US. Details were scarce – just vague talk of 'synergies' and tech development. We even speculated that Ford might want to keep an eye on this duo. Now, though, the fog is lifting, and we’re starting to see where this partnership could actually go.

Automotive News reports that JLR and Stellantis are teaming up to bring new Defender-badged models to American soil. Announced during a presentation to investors, the Defender brand is apparently first in line to get the collaborative treatment, giving the Brits a fresh way to stretch one of their most iconic badges.

What this future Defender will actually look like is still anyone’s guess. JLR is keeping specs, body styles, and launch dates under wraps for now. The only thing we know for sure: this one’s being built with American buyers in mind.

Why the Defender Makes Sense

If JLR wants to make a splash in America, putting the Defender at the front of the charge is a no-brainer. The Land Rover Defender has gone from quirky off-road specialist to one of JLR’s biggest hits. These days, it’s pulling in buyers who want luxury, muscle, and a look that stands out in the parking lot. That recipe is working wonders in North America, where big, bold SUVs are still king.

According to Automotive News, JLR’s own investor presentation highlighted that the US is a goldmine, home to 35% of the world’s wealth and 38% of its high rollers. Plus, Americans aren’t shy about dropping big bucks on cars, with most of the action happening above the $50,000 mark.

JLR thinks there’s so much room to grow here that its US business could one day rival the company’s entire global footprint. That’s a bold goal, but it explains why they’re so keen to roll out Defenders built just for American tastes.

For Stellantis, teaming up with JLR means another chance to flex its North American manufacturing muscle and split the bill with a premium partner.

Looking Beyond China

JLR’s pivot to America comes as the company rethinks its global game plan. China used to be a big deal for JLR, but the appetite for European luxury has cooled off. So now, the company is doubling down on markets that play to its strengths – think plush, powerful SUVs with plenty of gas in the tank.

Right now, North America is JLR’s biggest playground, making up about 30% of global sales in the first quarter. China, on the other hand, barely cracks seven percent.

Of note, one thing this new Defender certainly isn’t is the so-called 'Baby Defender.' That smaller model, set to share its EMA bones with the next Evoque and Velar, is already deep in development and will come with hybrid and electric options. It’s on a different track entirely.

For now, details on the Stellantis-powered Defender are still thin on the ground. But with JLR talking up new Defender models for America, it looks like the legendary off-roader is about to get a new sibling. We’ll be watching (and listening) for the next twist as soon as more details drop.
