A Swedish Dream Takes Shape

The 1990s arguably marked the birth of the modern car. Vehicles were still predominantly analog, but electronic technology was becoming increasingly important before digitalization became more apparent in the 2000s. Some of the performance cars that helped define the era included the Ferrari F40 and the McLaren F1, the British marque’s first production road car.

Coincidentally, both models helped inspire Koenigsegg’s first prototype, the CC. Three functional prototypes were built, beginning with chassis XP 001, which recently appeared at Secret Meet 2026 at Silverstone Circuit in the UK. The CC marked the beginning of the Swedish marque, which has since given the world models such as the Agera and Regera.

Opening Up a New Era

The Koenigsegg CC reflected the company's early efforts, founded by Christian von Koenigsegg, to hand-build high-performance cars. It featured a semi-carbon-fiber monocoque, a removable and stowable roof, and, most notably, the brand’s signature dihedral synchro-helix doors, which remain in use on current models.

Unlike Lamborghini-style scissor doors, the dihedral synchro-helix doors sweep outward and upward simultaneously, easing entry while limiting the side clearance required in tight parking spaces.

XP 001 is powered by an Audi-sourced 4.2-liter V8, while the production CC8S used a Koenigsegg-built, supercharged 4.7-liter V8 based on Ford’s Modular engine architecture. Producing 655 horsepower, the engine helped the CC8S earn a Guinness World Record in 2002 for the world’s most powerful production engine.

That record-setting theme continues today, with Koenigsegg pursuing acceleration, braking, top speed, and lap time records against rivals such as Bugatti and the American hypercar manufacturer and tuner Hennessey.

The OG Joins the Party

At Secret Meet, the XP 001 took part in a hypercar parade lap around Silverstone’s Grand Prix circuit alongside some of the world’s most coveted performance cars, including the Bugatti Chiron, Aston Martin Valhalla, and Lamborghini Revuelto. Despite being completed in 1996, Koenigsegg’s first prototype did not look especially dated, even when parked beside the much newer Agera RS in the pit lane.

Secret Meet said on Instagram that XP 001 was flown in from Dubai for the event, complete with a Dubai license plate. The current whereabouts of the other two prototypes are less publicly documented, but the three cars helped lay the foundation for the Koenigsegg known today.
