Bentley Trades Understatement for Drama With GT Supersports Design Theme

(0 reviews)

This doesn't look like your average Bentley grand tourer

Bentley has introduced a dramatic new design theme for the Continental GT Supersports, and it gives the sportiest coupe from the British marque an even edgier look. Set to debut at this month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, the new ‘Design Theme by Mulliner’ features a bold paint fade running from one side of the car to the other. It’s an effect one might expect to see on a brash Dodge Charger special edition, but Mulliner, Bentley’s personalization division, is known for its wild side.

This is the first time such a design theme has been applied to any Bentley model. The package adds a bold highlight color that emphasizes the driver’s side of the car, before blending into a darker tone on the opposite side. There’s also one off-center highlight stripe that aligns with the passenger and runs from front to rear. Mulliner also adds the ‘8’ numeral on the grille and an accent pinstripe to the sills, fender blades, and carbon diffusers.

For this Design Theme by Mulliner, customers can choose between three specially curated themes: Dragon, Electric, and Brodgar. Dragon features a Dragon Red hue fading to Black Crystal, Electric Blue fades into Dark Sapphire, and Pale Brodgar fades into Brodgar. Each one has a unique interior color scheme to match the outside of the vehicle, such as the Dragon theme’s Hotspur and Beluga cabin.

Seating just two to save weight, the Continental GT Supersports still has a gorgeously crafted cabin with full leather and meticulous contrast stitching. The different colors of the front seats add to the sense of occasion and emphasizes the focus on the driver in a car best known for pampering its passengers.

Sportier Continental GTs tend to hint at their performance potential rather than shout about it, but the Design Theme by Mulliner gives the Supersports coupe far more attitude. Then again, this is a much more driver-focused version of the GT than other models, and the aggressive design theme is in keeping with that.

This variant doesn’t have the heavier plug-in hybrid system of other Continental GTs, but its twin-turbocharged V8 still produces 657 horsepower. More weight-saving measures include the deletion of the rear seats, rear-wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive, forged Manthey Racing wheels, and an Akrapovic titanium exhaust system.

While it may not turn out to be the quickest Continental GT in a straight line, it promises to be the most engaging and agile model in the lineup.

Production of the Bentley Continental GT Supersports is scheduled to begin later this year and only 500 units are planned for select global markets. Given the average Bentley customer’s love for customization, a fair few of those units may end up being finished in the new design theme.
