BMW Reveals i3 First Edition After Strong Early Demand

(0 reviews)

Good Reception So Far

As far as new EV launches go, the BMW i3 seems to get the least amount of hate. Sure, there were still comments about its styling, but from what we've observed, the reception has been fairly positive.

Just as surprising is the clamor for this model. Due to popular demand, BMW has opened reservations for its i3 ahead of schedule. Do note that it's for the European market, but it does show that there is a strong interest in this model.

Meet the i3 50 xDrive First Edition

Yes, the name is a mouthful, but BMW is quite happy with how the i3 has been received so far. With that, the company is opening the order books for the First Edition model, which comes with a couple more extras as a reward of sorts for those who put their names down now.

So, what kind of goodies are we talking about here? Conveniences include tri-zone climate control, sun-protection glazing, heated steering, and a 3D head-up display. A Harman Kardon surround sound system is also standard, as well as a power-operated trunk. But the biggest perk here has to be the fast charging system. It increases the AC charging rate from 11 to 22 kW.

Specs Remain The Same

Aside from the additional standard features, the i3 First Edition is pretty much the same as the model that will soon reach showrooms. As it's the 50 xDrive model, it comes with a dual-motor setup and draws power from a 108.7 kWh battery pack. The First Edition only comes in this configuration.

Given its battery capacity, BMW claims the i3 50 xDrive can travel up to 563 miles on a single charge, though that figure is based on the more optimistic WLTP rating. Still, we can expect a long range from this electric sedan. As for total output, it's good for 469 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque, enough to give it a 0-62 mph time of 4.7 seconds.

The U.S Will Have to Wait a Little Longer

The European market will start getting the i3 as early as fall 2026, with production commencing in August. U.S. market models will come from BMW Plant Munich, although they won't land stateside until 2027.

So far, the i3 shows strong promise in terms of sales. The fact that BMW has already adjusted its timeline speaks volumes. One can say that the i3 can further strengthen BMW's EV portfolio, complementing the success of the iX3 in Europe at the moment.
