BMW’s New X5 Is Almost Here With A Radically Different Face

(0 reviews)

It's almost time to see the new BMW X5, an SUV that will feature a wide variety of powertrains to keep it relevant whatever the regulatory climate in 10 years' time, and BMW has provided one more teaser before the reveal tomorrow. The G65 X5 will be available with a combustion engine (gasoline or diesel, depending on the market) or a plug-in hybrid setup, but it'll also be offered as an all-electric vehicle or with hydrogen power, so it's arguably the most important vehicle BMW will launch this year, maybe even this decade. This will be the first time a hydrogen-powered Bimmer enters series production after decades of prototypes being tested worldwide. But before we learn exactly what's under the skin, we'll see the package these powertrains will be revealed in, so let's see what we can glean from the new teaser on Instagram.

A New Face for BMW's SUVs in the Neue Klasse Era

BMW says the new X5 makes a "significant leap forward" with its debut tomorrow, and the new face aims to show just how much more advanced the new G65 is than the outgoing G05 by adopting a similar look to that seen on the new iX3, with tall, skinny kidney grille elements in the middle and a mask-like upper fascia with the headlights in the outer extremeities. Unlike the iX3, however, the daytime running light LEDs take on an X-shaped motif with the X5, something that is expected to make its way to other X sports activity vehicles soon. Due to the lighting of the single teaser image, it's unclear if this previews the combustion-powered X5 or the electric iX5, but a leak from BMW USA earlier this year confirmed the gas X5 would arrive by the end of 2026, so that's probably what we're about to see.

The upcoming G65 BMW X5 is reportedly going to claim the title of Heaviest BMW Ever, if recent reports are to be believed. According to BMW Blog, the 2027 X5 could weigh almost 6,200 pounds. The current G90 BMW M5 weighs a staggering 5,390 pounds, and the XM Label SUV with which it shares its powertrain tips the scales at just over 6,000 lbs, which is roughly what the i7 electric limo weighs. With more tech and power come bigger, heavier braking systems. Bigger, heavier brakes contribute to requirements for more power, creating a vicious circle. Hopefully, this new X5 is as good at managing weight as BMW's reputation demands.
