BYD Yangwang U8 Shows It Can Do More Than Just Float On Water

Chinese automakers have harnessed their population and huge market to further their automotive market's growth. Another aspect these brands have pushed is technology, with both at the forefront of EV battery tech and in-car features. Slowly but surely, they've also transitioned to making the driving experience easier and stress-free by using more technology.

Apart from making multiple advancements in ADAS systems and autonomous driving capabilities, brands with SUVs like BYD have chosen to invest heavily in making their cars off-road experts, too.

BYD Yangwang U8

We've all seen the videos of the BYD Yangwang U8 driving (or floating) on water. This has become the iconic "calling card" of the model, yet there is more to the U8 than just aquatic capabilities. A video posted on YouTube by CarForLife shows the U8 being driven and tested on some very extreme terrain.

In the video, we see the U8 showcasing its off-road capabilities. It goes on with no commentary, just music and videos of the U8 being tested. It is highly likely that the video's poster was invited to a media showcase, which gave him or her access to all the footage of the U8 being tested. What is surprising is the ease with which the U8 tackles varied surfaces and extreme incline angles, whether descending or ascending.

Chinese manufacturers like BYD invest heavily in research and development, which means they, like major brands, also build proving grounds. I was fortunate to visit the Zhengzhou All-terrain Circuit in China last year, where we sampled a wide range of BYD cars and brands across multiple surfaces. The highlight of the showcase, though, was the Yangwang U8 being driven aggressively up a simulated sand dune that is apparently certified by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Disruptor

Another trait that Chinese manufacturers love is being the disruptors of the industry. Looking at the Yangwang U8 against established models like the Land Cruiser, G-Class, and Range Rover, it trumps them on paper with over 1,000 hp, a float mode that lets it traverse water, and modern yet luxurious creature comforts.

What the video provides is an up-close look at how the U8 can also disrupt as a true off-roader. Yangwang, as a sub-brand of BYD, likes to push the boundaries, with a recent debut of an all-EV Hypercar called the U9, which, in the extreme variant, posted a sub-7-minute Nurburgring time.
