China’s Great Wall Motor (GWM) is making a loud, eight-cylinder counter-argument. The automaker has officially confirmed that its self-developed 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8—first previewed to American audiences at CES earlier this year—will make its production debut under the hood of a new flagship SUV.

While legacy American brands are currently shelving their iconic V8s in favor of turbocharged inline-sixes and EV architectures, GWM is investing heavily in large-displacement combustion. This new 4.0-liter powerplant is a thoroughly modern piece of engineering. Despite GWM deliberately choosing Las Vegas as the venue to parade this engine, American buyers should not expect to see it in local showrooms. The automaker currently lacks a retail footprint in the United States and has announced no concrete plans to navigate the regulatory hurdles required to enter the market. Instead, this V8 SUV is explicitly targeted at global regions that still harbor a massive appetite for high-displacement off-roaders, primarily Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East.

GWM's strategic pivot proves a point to the global market: the emotional and mechanical appeal of a V8 engine still holds significant currency, and traditional combustion continues to find a lucrative foothold in an increasingly electrified era.
