High Wind Warning: 65 MPH Crosswinds Threaten Western Highways Through Tonight

The National Weather Service in Cheyenne warns of west winds gusting to 65 mph along Interstate 80 and Interstate 25 in southeast Wyoming, with the worst risk for campers and high profile vehicles.

Through the afternoon until 6 PM Monday on Interstate 80 near Elk Mountain and Interstate 25 north of Cheyenne, where crosswinds are strongest.

What The Warning Covers

The Cheyenne office issued a high wind warning that runs until 6 PM Monday. West winds of 30 to 40 mph, gusting as high as 65 mph, are expected across the North Snowy Range Foothills and Central Laramie Range. That covers Arlington and Elk Mountain along Interstate 80 and the Bordeaux area along Interstate 25 between Chugwater and Wheatland. A separate warning for East Platte County, around Wheatland and Guernsey, carries gusts up to 60 mph. The office said the strong cross winds would be "hazardous to light weight or high profile vehicles, including campers and tractor trailers."

Where The Wind Hits The Road

The Elk Mountain section of Interstate 80 is a known wind hazard, and WYDOT regularly restricts or closes it to light and high profile vehicles when gusts reach this range. Interstate 25 between Chugwater and Wheatland sees similar problems. In late June, with campers in tow and motorcycles on the road, many of the drivers in the warning area are not expecting wind like this.

What Drivers Should Do

• Check Wyoming 511 for live wind closures and light vehicle restrictions before you go.
• If you are towing a camper or driving a tall, light vehicle, consider waiting until the wind eases after 6 PM.
• Keep both hands on the wheel through gaps in the terrain, where gusts are strongest.
• Slow down and leave extra room around trucks and trailers that may be pushed sideways.
• Expect a sudden push when you leave a road cut or pass a break in the hills.

The warning is set to expire at 6 PM, though conditions on this stretch can change quickly. Check Wyoming 511 and the Cheyenne high wind warning before heading out.
