Next-Generation Revamp Hitting Pause
Needless to say, the Kia Sorento is a big deal for the brand. It’s South Korea’s best-selling passenger vehicle as of May 2026, and it’s also a top-seller in the US. That tells you just how important this midsize SUV is to Kia’s global game plan.
The current MQ4 generation is almost seven years old, so a full redesign seemed like the obvious next step. But new sightings in South Korea suggest Kia might be changing course.
A Sorento test mule was spotted in Korea, wrapped in heavy camouflage, courtesy of ShortsCar. Test cars in disguise aren’t rare, but this one takes it to another level. It’s the current model underneath, but with thick cladding and black covers hiding almost every detail.
Prototype Hints At Another Major Refresh
Judging by what we’ve seen, Kia might be gearing up for a second major facelift on the MQ4 Sorento instead of rolling out an all-new model. Of note, the current-generation Sorento had its first facelift in 2023.
Most of the camouflage is packed around the front, the lights, and the body panels. That usually means big visual changes are coming – ones Kia wants to keep under wraps until launch. Though the LED signatures, front and back, appear familiar, this sighting hints that Kia’s planning to stretch the current platform’s life a bit longer.
It makes sense from a business angle. Building a brand-new model costs a lot, especially now that carmakers are juggling gas engines and electric cars. Keeping a strong seller like the Sorento going helps Kia spread out those costs and stay competitive.

A New Strategy for Kia?
If Kia really is planning a second facelift, it wouldn’t be the first time it has done this. The Korean marque is taking a similar route with the K5 sedan. Instead of jumping straight to a new generation, Kia gave the current model another big update.
The Sorento could be next. With its strong sales and key spot in Kia’s lineup, sticking with the current generation is a safer bet than rolling the dice on a brand-new model right now. Hyundai Group's Pleos Connect could also debut in the refreshed model, bringing updated in-cabin tech to the popular midsize SUV.
Kia isn’t saying anything yet. But if the camouflaged test car is any clue, the Sorento could be in for another facelift instead of a full redesign.
