Kia’s Cheapest Car Could Be Killed By Tougher Emissions Rules

The Little Kia Facing a Big Deadline

A report from Auto Express states that Kia’s smallest model is headed for discontinuation as emissions regulations continue to tighten. However, the model in question is not the K4 or Seltos, but rather the Picanto, which is sold in markets such as the U.K., where it has been among the brand’s best-sellers.

The Picanto is a tiny hatchback well suited to narrow European roads. Given the U.S. market’s preference for larger vehicles, the model was never officially sold in the U.S. Still, it has given buyers in other markets an affordable entry point into the brand, but with Kia reportedly no longer planning a next-generation model, its days appear to be numbered.

Signs of the Times

That is because the U.K.’s current Zero Emission Vehicle mandate requires new combustion-powered cars sold after 2030 to use some form of hybrid assistance. Ted Lee, executive vice president and head of Kia’s Global Operations Division, told the publication that the Picanto’s tight packaging makes shoehorning in electric motors and other hybrid components a major challenge.

As such, the nameplate could exit the lineup by the end of 2029.

The Picanto first arrived in the U.K. in 2004 and has since accumulated more than 260,000 sales there, along with around three million globally. Its peers are now turning to hybridization, while some, such as the Volkswagen ID. Polo is going fully electric. These shifts reflect the changes automakers may need to make to comply with new policies, though it could also be said that the tiny hatch has had a fulfilling run.

Kia’s Next Big Bet

Instead of allocating resources to a next-gen Picanto, Kia is targeting around 14 EV models by 2030. In the U.S., the automaker is also looking to enter the lucrative pickup truck market with a midsize entry, competing in a segment led by models such as the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger. The truck is also expected to be electrified, potentially with hybrid and extended-range EV variants.

However, despite electrification being the name of the game, some models are still struggling to gain traction. The plug-in hybrid version of the Kia Niro did not return for the 2026 model year in the U.S., while the performance-oriented EV6 GT remains absent from the lineup. Both models have also been affected by changing market conditions, including U.S. tariffs that have made imported electrified models more difficult to justify.
