Built For The Dunes
The Middle East’s appetite for large SUVs is nothing new, with the Toyota Land Cruiser remaining one of the region’s most popular vehicles. Now, Mercedes-Benz is playing to that crowd with a limited-edition version of its iconic off-roader, the G-Class, capped at just 35 units.
Dubbed the G63 Mirage Edition, the model references the desert mirage, an optical illusion caused by light bending through layers of air at different temperatures. It can make distant objects appear like water, only for the illusion to disappear at closer range. That same play on perception is reflected in this particular G-Class.
Desert Magic
According to Mercedes-Benz, the G 63 Mirage Edition is finished in Manufaktur Made to Measure Verde Silver Magno paint, which shifts in color depending on light, depth, and movement. Manufaktur Made to Measure is essentially the brand’s bespoke customization program, similar in spirit to Ferrari’s Tailor Made.
The automaker summed up the concept with the line, “In the desert, not everything you see is an illusion. Sometimes, a mirage can become a reality.”
Other unique components in the Mirage Edition package include 22-inch AMG cross-forged wheels in Tech Gold, a customized spare wheel cover insert with “1 of 35” script, Platinum White upholstery, and a G-Class grab handle bearing the edition name. Since it is based on the AMG G63, the SUV should retain the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which belongs to the same engine family that powers models like the Aston Martin DB12.
No Mirage Here
The catch, however, is that the Mercedes-AMG G 63 Mirage Edition is exclusive to the Middle East. While it does not appear to receive any major mechanical upgrades, its rarity and bespoke details should make it highly desirable among collectors.
What could come to the U.S. instead is the so-called baby G-Class, essentially a smaller version of the iconic SUV. Expected to arrive in 2027, the baby G-Class was initially believed to be an all-electric off-roader, but recent reports suggest it could also be offered with a gasoline powertrain. A convertible version of the AMG G 63 is also reportedly headed stateside in 2028.
For now, the AMG G63 already starts at around $195,500 in the U.S., so it is not hard to imagine the Mirage Edition fetching even more money.
