Polestar Is Giving Its No-Rear-Window EV A More Useful Shape

(0 reviews)

The Practical Alternative

When Polestar unveiled the 4 in 2023, perhaps its most interesting detail was the lack of a rear window. This setup was allowed because side mirrors already provide the legally required rear visibility, though it still has a roof-mounted rear camera that feeds a digital “rearview” mirror. While the design remains divisive, the Swedish electric car brand has now teased an SUV variant for those who may not fancy the coupe-like style.

In a press release, Polestar said the new SUV variant adds “an added layer of flexibility and practicality,” thanks to its more upright body, which should provide more cargo space and make loading easier for everyday use. Despite the changes, the company said it retains the original coupe's design, performance, and sustainability credentials.

Form Before Function?

For those wondering, sacrificing some practicality for design is not new, with BMW offering similar coupe-style SUVs such as the X6. They are not typically the best-selling models in their respective lineups, though they still cater to buyers who prefer a little more style. A sloping roofline can also create a more aerodynamic profile, which benefits an EV like the Polestar 4 by reducing drag that can affect range.

Full details remain under wraps, with Polestar revealing only a rear three-quarter teaser showing part of the rear window. However, the automaker did say the new variant will feature retuned chassis components to refine the driving experience. It will also offer a WLTP-estimated range of up to 630 km, or 391 miles, in rear-motor variants and up to 544 horsepower in dual-motor models.

Michael Lohscheller, Polestar CEO, said, “Polestar 4 has quickly established itself as a favorite among our customers, and we've seen strong demand from drivers who want distinctive design and performance combined with great practicality. With the Polestar 4 SUV, we're building on that success by offering even more versatility, while staying true to the Polestar 4 character.”

The Timing Couldn't Be Worse

Unfortunately for American buyers who may prefer this over the coupe, Polestar is set to stop selling new vehicles in the U.S. starting with the 2027 model year due to its Chinese-linked connected-vehicle technology. That likely explains why the coupe is currently being offered with discounts of up to $25,000, bringing its starting price to just over $30,000.

As for the new SUV version, the company said sales will begin on September 2 in a majority of its markets, with production taking place in Busan, South Korea.
