Rental Company Probed For Renting Out Ford Expedition, Hyundai Palisade Under Recall

(0 reviews)

What Every Renter Should Know

When renting a car, several factors should be considered, including the type of vehicle needed, especially when a seven-passenger model is required. It is also important to inspect the vehicle thoroughly and ensure that any existing damage is properly documented before leaving the rental location, helping protect against potential disputes or false damage claims later on.

But in a recent investigation opened by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it seems not everything can be checked beforehand. The safety agency is probing Nu Car Rentals after finding that the company rented two vehicles to customers before required recall repairs were completed. The two involved units are a 2025 Hyundai Palisade and a 2021 Ford Expedition.

Understanding The Alleged Violation

This investigation, AQ26001, does not necessarily mean Hyundai or Ford failed to comply with NHTSA’s requirements. Rather, the safety agency is saying that Nu Car Rentals should not have rented the aforementioned vehicles before their respective recall repairs were performed. Depending on the nature of the recall, unrepaired vehicles can pose safety risks and increase the likelihood of a crash, not only for drivers but also for other road users.

The report did not specify which recalls were associated with the Hyundai Palisade and Ford Expedition involved in the investigation. One notable safety campaign affecting the Palisade, however, involved over 500,000 MY2020–MY2025 units because the third-row side-curtain airbags may deploy improperly in a crash.

NHTSA also noted that it has opened an audit query to gather additional information regarding the issue.

The Takeaway For Rental Operators

If anything, the investigation should help draw attention to the need for rental companies nationwide to comply with safety recalls, especially given the risks that unresolved defects can pose. After all, safety recall remedies are typically performed at no cost to vehicle owners and fleet operators.

While the investigation remains ongoing, Nu Car Rentals offers vehicle rental services in multiple regions around the world, including Europe, the Middle East, and North America. According to the company's website, it operates at several locations across the U.S., including near Miami International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport. Its fleet ranges from economy cars such as the Nissan Sentra to larger people movers, as well as performance-oriented models such as the Ford Mustang.
