The Loony Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door EV Is About To Get Even Wackier

(0 reviews)

Less than two months ago, Mercedes-AMG unveiled its new AMG GT 4-Door, and instead of being a twin-turbocharged V8 monster, it's become an all-electric performance EV with a four-figure horsepower rating. Sadly, the styling is getting even more negativity online than the powertrain, but Mercedes is leaning into its zany side with a new, even more hardcore AMG GT that was just spied on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Sprouting new vents and a large wing, this seems to be AMG's version of the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT Weissach with Manthey Kit. Could AMG have its sights set on a record at the Green Hell?

Hardcore Mercedes-AMG GT Styling Grabs Attention

The most obvious changes to the AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupe are at the front, where the atheltic EV has gained enormous vaned vents on its hood. The blades directing airflow out towards the windshield look just as extreme as those on the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, if not more so, and while we know BMW's electric M3 will extract heat from the powertrain, it's not yet clear if this AMG is vented to cool its axial flux motors, to reduce front-end lift, to lessen drag, or all of the above. Whatever the case, a roll cage can be seen through the windshield, so however AMG is upgrading the EV, the changes surely have a performance benefit.

It's also unclear if the front bumper will be changed much, but we expect unique detailing for a hardcore AMG GT. At the rear, this prototype looks almost identical to the car revealed in May, but it's now got a serious wing attached to the tailgate, with endplates that aim to guide the air flowing around the glasshouse. Overall, this AMG GT prototype looks even wilder than before, and perhaps leaning into extremism is how AMG hopes to attract new customers.

Hardcore AMG GT Or New Options Package?

It's not yet clear if AMG is developing a separate new variant to sit at the top of the AMG GT hierarchy or a factory-approved performance package that buyers of the GT 63 will have access to. AMG has never made a Black Series version of any EV, but the times are a-changing. If this is a faster, more powerful car, it's going to require a highly experienced driver to get the most out of it. The base AMG GT 55 4-Door Coupe already has 805 horsepower, while the AMG GT 63 produces a ludicrous 1,153 hp with 1,475 lb-ft of torque. Any increase on that would be just scandalous, but when there are Chinese cars with almost three times as much power, perhaps AMG feels the need to take things a little further. We'll report back once we know more.
