America buys hundreds of thousands of Toyota RAV4s every year. It is a dominant force on highways and in driveways across the country. Toyota now wants buyers to believe this crossover can also conquer the wilderness, especially the rugged Woodland Edition. To see if the 2026 RAV4 is actually capable off the pavement or just playing dress up, YouTube channel The Fast Lane Car put it through its paces in an off-road environment; here's what happened.
RAV4 All-Wheel Drive Setup
The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid uses a highly unconventional AWD setup. You will not find a traditional driveshaft connecting the front engine to the rear wheels. Instead, a gasoline engine and electric motor power the front, while a completely separate electric motor drives the rear axle. Total system output sits at 236 horsepower. However, that rear motor only provides 54 horsepower. If the front end loses traction, you rely entirely on those 54 horses to save you.
During controlled slip tests on steel rollers, this hardware limitation became glaringly obvious. When the RAV4 was subjected to a three-wheel slip scenario where only one tire had grip, it struggled significantly and failed the test. The on-board off-road system spins the wheels aggressively, but the computer cannot send enough torque to the single grounded tire to generate forward momentum. Odd considering the flexibility that separate motors afford. The truth is, the RAV4 failed to get itself out of the slip situation because of a combination of factors: First, the RAV4 features an open differential, which means the engine delivers power to the wheels experiencing the least resistance. And second, the underpowered 54 horsepower e-axle in the rear could not provide the brute force required. Serious off-roading requires serious equipment, it seems.

Lab tests do not always translate to the trail. Out in the actual dirt trenches, the RAV4 Woodland Edition paints a completely different picture - Toyota gives the Woodland 8.5 inches of ground clearance and authentic 18-inch Dunlop GrandTrek tires for the example used in the video, avoiding the trap of using standard street rubber. When you engage Trail Mode, the software finally wakes up. The traction control system clamps down on slipping wheels immediately, transferring crucial hybrid power to the tires with actual grip. Traversing deep ruts requires only half throttle, proving the electric AWD system can handle uneven terrain when properly configured.
Verdict
Make no mistake, the driving dynamics are aggressively front-biased. You feel the vehicle pulling you up the hill rather than pushing you. It lacks the mechanical lockers and low range gears of a true utility vehicle like a 4Runner or a Wrangler. The RAV4 is still more of a commuter than either of those two vehicles, and far less of an off-roader than they are. Is the 2026 RAV4 a serious rock crawler? No. But if your weekend plans involve navigating washed-out dirt roads to reach an off-grid American campsite, this crossover fits the bill.
