Toyota’s Alabama Plant Has Built 11 Million Engines In 25 Years

Producing cars in America for any major manufacturer isn't as simple as people think. Some might believe that all it takes is building one massive facility that houses all facets of the production process, but the truth is far more complex than that.

Take Toyota, for example: across the United States, it has over 14 manufacturing facilities, each responsible for building a specific car part. One very important assembly plant is celebrating a major milestone.

Engine Builders

Huntsville, Alabama, is home to one of the brand's most important assembly plants, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama (TMMAL). This facility is responsible for building engines and other vital powertrain components. 2026 marks the year TMMAL is set to celebrate 25 years in the business of being part of Toyota's manufacturing arm. It started as a $220 million investment and has expanded into a modern, massive $1.7 billion facility.

Marc Perry, president of Toyota Alabama, says that the decades of growth and success at TMMAL are a testament to its 2,400 committed team members. He goes on to say that the team's dedication, skill, and passion make Toyota the leader in quality and innovation, which is why the brand is known today.

The Huntsville plant started out producing just one engine for the Toyota Tundra, but today it has expanded to build engines for seven of the nine models built by Toyota in North America. These are mixed between four and six-cylinder powertrains. To date, the production facility has churned out a whopping 11 million engines, and in 2025, a sizable $282 million investment was made to produce three cutting-edge differentials.

Celebrating by Giving Back

Manufacturing isn't the only hallmark of the TMMAL's existence. Over the years, they've also been a huge benefit for the local community, having donated more than $24 million to local charities and initiatives. A major investment was an $11 million donation to Huntsville City Schools through Toyota USA Foundation’s Driving Possibilities.

To commemorate its 25th anniversary, TMMAL donated $25,000 to five local non-profits, bringing the total to $125,000. These non-profits are the Big Brothers and Sisters of the Tennessee Valley, Free 2 Teach, The Enrichment Center, The Schools Foundation, and the Huntsville Hospital Foundation.
