Volkswagen's Supercar Concept Looks Like It Took Notes From Audi

A Supercar In The Making?

One thing about car concepts is that they can spark ideas and design cues that may later be used for production models. This internship project, shared by Volkswagen design boss Andreas Mindt, shows a very future-forward take on a VW supercar called the ID.DIN T14.

According to Mindt, designer Fabian Reitz took a more logical, technical approach, grounding the project in precision, structure, and function rather than purely emotional or artistic expression. The result is a simpler and more easily understood design, the kind of minimalist-esque thinking that can already be seen in road-going models like the Tesla Model 3. This particular sketch is also reminiscent of Audi’s Concept C and the new Nuvolari.

Technical By Design

Audi is under the Volkswagen Group, so a broader connection is not hard to imagine. What is immediately apparent is the monolithic body, minimal surfacing, and canopy-style cabin. But it is not as straightforward as it first seems, as the ID.DIN T14 also gets pronounced wheel arches and a massive rear diffuser that give it a more aggressive character.

Not a lot of technical details were disclosed about the sketch. However, it does raise the question of whether Volkswagen will ever tap into extreme creations again. One of the automaker’s best-known entries into that space was the ID.R, an all-electric prototype that still holds the overall Pikes Peak record in Colorado. Speaking of the ID.R, it also shares some visual similarities with this concept.

Wishful Thinking

While a production version of something like this would be compelling, it is worth noting that halo supercars are rarely easy business cases, as evidenced by the Lexus LFA. Volkswagen is still navigating the modern era of electrification, where choosing the right powertrain strategy can make or break a product plan. Many automakers are still trying to recover from EV-related spending, while VW is also preparing more affordable small electric cars in Europe.

Still, concepts like this show that Volkswagen's performance ambitions could extend well beyond the Golf GTI and Golf R. Whether that ever translates into a production supercar is another question entirely. The reception to the Audi Nuvolari could offer a glimpse of whether this more technical design language has real appeal.
