Xiaomi's First Full-Size SUV Gets a Roof Tent and 900-Mile Range

A Brand For Everything

Chinese brands like to diversify, whether in electronics or cars; they feel that if a new segment or market needs to be tapped, they set up a new company under the same umbrella specifically for that segment.

This is even more evident in the automotive industry: each mother company has multiple sub-brands, each targeting a specific lifestyle or segment. Xiaomi has been diving deeper into cars after its successes in technology; its latest venture will see it dabble in the world of outdoor motoring.

Sky Nomad N90

The tech giant is launching a whole new car brand, called Sky Nomad, or Xun Tian in the local dialect, which translates to "looking for sky." Sky Nomad, as a brand, will focus on the "glamping" (glamor + camping) lifestyle segment, offering plush, new-energy SUVs designed to enhance the experience for those who love the outdoors. The first product under the new brand will also serve as the Xiaomi automotive group's first full-size SUV, called the N90.

Spotted recently on the road doing some testing, Car News China reports that the N90 will have built-in outdoor features. The only confirmed one so far seems to be a soft roof-tent that easily folds onto the top of the N90. Based on some of the spy shots, the tent is beige and can also be covered with a mosquito tent to keep the bloodsuckers away, especially at night.

Range Extender

Another unique aspect of the N90 is that it will be a Range Extender Vehicle (REV), meaning the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine is there purely to charge the batteries powering the electric motor. In pure EV mode, it is said to have a range of up to 300 miles, with a rumored combined range of over 900 miles. Since it will be an off-roader, the N90 will come with dual-motor options.

Other features have yet to be confirmed, but based on the spy shots, it will have a roof-mounted LiDAR system for ADAS, and the N90 is also reported to be spec'd with air suspension and rear-wheel steering.
