They say, “the third time’s the charm.” The first time in 2022 a larger group of volunteers under the leadership of Scott Ammerman (then the local Regional Coordinator for Tread Lightly!) put a big dent in the pile of trash that had been dumped over the hillside off Tank Hollow Road. The second time, earlier […]View the full article

Toyota just announced the return of the FJ Cruiser, at least in a spiritual sense. While it’s been just over a decade since the previous FJ Cruiser left the States, it was only discontinued in the Middle East a couple of years ago. However, if you’re waiting to head out into the North American wilderness in a brand new Land Cruiser “FJ,” you’ll have to wait at least a bit longer since this new model will only be available in Asian markets. Let me paint you a picture of authenticity in 2025: A $90,000 Land Cruiser with a custom paint job in some aggressively earthy shade that probably has a name like "Tactical Sage" or "Desert Warfare Tan," seventeen sponsor decals, a YouTube handle plastered across the rear window in letters large enough to be seen from the International Space Station, and enough electronic equipment in the cab to run a small television production company. This magnificent beast is piloted by a guy in a $150...Vie

We drove into the wilderness to escape our screens, then paid one of the world's richest billionaires to bring them with us. This satirical look at overlanding's satellite internet obsession explores how Starlink and similar services are killing boredom, destroying campfire culture, and turning backcountry trips into just another place to doomscroll. Spoiler: we told ourselves it was for the kids, but we're the ones who can't disconnect.View the full article

Over the weekend, I had the privilege of testing out the 2025 Ultimate Overland Vehicle build, a GMC Sierra HD 2500 AT4X AEV Edition, which will be auctioned off in October, with the proceeds going to the programs and organizations sponsored and supported by the Overland Expo Foundation. With the opportunity to test out a new vehicle came the temptation to test out new ground as well, but ultimately I decided that the best way to evaluate performance was to go over known terrain, as I already kn

(Full disclosure: this is a long-term review of the first-generation Genesis dual-battery kit for the 2007-2021 Tundra. It has been superceded by a later design, the merits of which I cannot address.) In 2021 we bought a beautiful, 80-year-old cabin in Fairbanks, Alaska, and soon realized we’d need a dedicated vehicle to leave there. A full-sized 4x4 pickup seemed the right choice, both for the conditions near the Arctic Circle and because I’d be hauling up a cargo trailer loaded with furniture,
