Aussie fans are getting one last chance to celebrate one of alternative rock’s defining albums.
Arizona icons Jimmy Eat World have announced an Australian headline tour for December, bringing the 25th anniversary celebrations of their landmark 2001 album Bleed American Down Under for what will be the final performances anywhere in the world dedicated to the record.
Jimmy Eat World – ‘The Middle’
Marking the band’s first Australian headline tour since 2017, the run will see Bleed American performed in full alongside a stack of fan favourites, with Aussie favourites Ruby Fields and A. Swayze & The Ghosts joining every show.
Originally released in July 2001, Bleed American became the record that launched Jimmy Eat World onto the global stage, spawning enduring classics including The Middle, Sweetness, Bleed American and A Praise Chorus while helping redefine alternative rock for an entire generation.
Twenty-five years later, the album’s influence continues to echo throughout modern rock, with artists including Paramore, Fall Out Boy, Dashboard Confessional, Taking Back Sunday and The Wonder Years all citing it as a formative influence on their own music.
As they prepare to farewell the anniversary celebrations, frontman Jim Adkins says the band are approaching these shows with a fresh appreciation for what the record has come to mean.
“When we printed the last mix of Bleed American, we felt like we had achieved something great for ourselves,” Adkins says. “There was no barometer of how it would connect with people outside of the studio, and we are still in awe with the life the record and songs have had since their original release. Bleed American is as much yours as it is ours, so we want to celebrate it with you all in a very special way.”
Adkins says fans can also expect a bigger live production than previous tours.
“I feel like at this time in our lives, especially for me, it’s important to get back to a place that you can savor. This tour is designed to be an elevated version of our show, a heightened experience with production that reflects 25 years of learning how to stretch artistically in the live environment.”
Drummer Zach Lind adds that revisiting the album has given the band a renewed perspective.
“This tour feels like a second chance to show appreciation to the fans who have provided our livelihood for the past 25 years.”
Released at the height of the early-2000s alternative rock boom, Bleed American not only became Jimmy Eat World’s commercial breakthrough but has endured as one of the genre’s defining releases. The Middle recently joined Spotify’s Billion Streams Club, while the album itself remains a touchstone for generations of emo, pop-punk and alternative rock fans.
With these Australian dates set to close the curtain on the album’s global 25th anniversary celebrations, local audiences will be the last in the world to experience one of the most beloved records of the 2000s performed in full.
