Singer, songwriter and internet personality Oliver Tree has died aged 32 following a helicopter crash in Brazil.

Tree – born Oliver Tree Nickell – was identified as one of six people killed after two helicopters collided mid-air over Recreio dos Bandeirantes in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday morning local time. Authorities in Brazil have confirmed an investigation into the incident is now underway.

According to Brazilian authorities and local reporting, one of the helicopters crashed into a vehicle yard, igniting a fire at the site. Investigators from Brazil’s aviation accident authority have since attended the scene to begin evidence collection and establish the cause of the collision.

Other reported victims include passengers Lucas Vignale, Gaspar Prim (known online as Argentinian creator Gaspi), Lucas Brito Chaves, and pilots Alexandre Souza and Charles Marsillac.

Tree was in South America as part of his ongoing world tour at the time of the accident. Earlier this year, he had also announced a return to Australia this October behind his latest album Love You Madly, Hate You Badly – a run that would have marked his first local headline dates in several years.

The Australian tour had been set to bring Tree’s famously unpredictable live show to Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth – performances that fans had already begun counting down to following the announcement.

Over the last decade, Oliver Tree carved out one of music’s more unusual and instantly recognisable careers – blending alternative pop, electronic music, comedy and internet culture into something that felt entirely his own. After early releases under the name Tree, he broke through globally with tracks including When I’m Down, Life Goes On and Miss You, becoming known for his deliberately absurd visual world, unmistakable bowl cut and ability to turn left-field ideas into huge viral moments.
