Wait… Green Day Made A Movie? Hear Their New Song From ‘NIMRODS’

Green Day have surprised fans with their first new music since 2024’s Saviors, unveiling the rollicking new single I’m Never Gonna R.I.P. alongside the announcement of the soundtrack to their upcoming comedy film, NIMRODS.

If you somehow missed the memo that Green Day were making a movie, you’re probably not alone.

Hitting cinemas on August 14, NIMRODS follows three friends in a struggling garage band who hit the road believing they’ve landed the ultimate gig: opening for Green Day at a New Year’s Eve show in Los Angeles.

As you’d expect, things don’t exactly go according to plan.

The film was co-produced by the punk icons themselves – Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool – and draws directly from the band’s own early touring experiences crammed into vans long before they became one of the biggest punk bands on the planet.

Speaking about the project last year, bassist Mike Dirnt described NIMRODS as “triumphant”, “hilarious” and full of heart.

“It basically follows the story of a band and their adventures trying to get across the country to open for us,” Dirnt explained. “They mimic adventures that actually happened to us, and things that actually happened to us when we were touring in vans back in the day.”

Landing ahead of the film is the official NIMRODS soundtrack, due out July 31, featuring 30 tracks dominated by Green Day alongside music from fictional in-universe band Analog Dogs, plus contributions from The Paradox, Ultra Q and actor-musician Mckenna Grace.

Leading the release is Green Day original I’m Never Gonna R.I.P., a swaggering, 1950s-inspired rock ‘n’ roll cut that channels the spirit of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Bill Haley & His Comets while marking Green Day’s first brand new song since Saviors.

The accompanying video also offers fans their best look yet at NIMRODS, mixing footage from the film with the band’s latest single and giving a glimpse of the coming-of-age road trip at the heart of the project.

Whether NIMRODS ends up becoming the next great rock comedy remains to be seen – but for Green Day fans, the prospect of a feature film inspired by the band’s scrappy early years, plus a soundtrack packed with classics and brand new music, is a pretty enticing combination.
