Sydney-born, Los Angeles-based alternative artist YAGKI has returned with what may be her most vulnerable release yet, unveiling the emotionally charged new single, Broken Chair.
Following a string of deeply personal songs exploring addiction, recovery and self-worth, Broken Chair finds YAGKI confronting one of the darkest chapters of her life. Written over the course of three years, the track reflects on surviving multiple suicide attempts and the difficult questions that can linger long after the immediate crisis has passed.
YAGKI – ‘Broken Chair’
Rather than romanticising those experiences, YAGKI says the song is about facing them honestly.
“This song took years to get right, because it took me a while to find the best way to tell it without it becoming something it’s not,” she explains. “The lyrics are confronting – not to romanticise it, but because the fear deserves to be looked at directly. What if I’d gone through with it? What does it mean to survive something you did to yourself? Am I worth mourning when I’ve caused so much pain?”
Musically, Broken Chair blends industrial-leaning alternative rock with soaring pop melodies, pairing heavy instrumentation with YAGKI’s emotionally raw vocal performance as she explores the space between survival and healing.
Rather than searching for neat resolutions, the song sits with the guilt, shame and fractured self-worth that can remain even after someone is physically safe, offering an unflinching portrait of recovery that refuses easy answers.
Inspired by artists including Paramore and Maggie Lindemann, YAGKI has built a growing audience through her willingness to write openly about subjects often left unspoken, transforming intensely personal experiences into songs that resonate with listeners navigating their own struggles.
Born in Western Sydney to a Lebanese family before recently relocating independently to Los Angeles, YAGKI has steadily carved out her own lane in alternative music. After surviving a childhood coma and overcoming a disadvantaged upbringing, she’s continued to build momentum through relentless touring – including an ambitious one-day run across Sydney, New Zealand and Los Angeles in 2024 – and a series of California headline dates.
With Broken Chair, YAGKI delivers her most confronting statement to date, choosing to tell a story of survival with honesty, compassion and remarkable courage. Stream it up above.
