  1. What to pack on your Overland adventure?

Here are some ideas based on what I see others bring and what I bring. When preparing for my overland trip I want to make sure I can stay on the trails for 7 days (avg).
    SLEEP
    where are you sleeping?
Overlandish Basecamp Standard - Stowed Dimensions: 59" x 15" x 15" Weight: 70 lbs - purchased but not sure how I'm packing it in the 4Runner with the dog but I'll figure it out — ordered
Rooftop Tent (pro: easy setup, comfortable con: always on vehicle, difficult to remove, extra weight when offroading)
From what I have been reading, alot of people that had roof top tents have moved to ground tents and some of the most popular ground tents are...
Gazelle (summer time since its non-insulated)
    Advantage: Very affordable
Advantage: Very popular (probably because very affordable)
    Overlandish (4 season tent)
    Advantage: camp anytime, anywhere
Advantage: built to last a lifetime
    Advantage: popular for serious overlanders
what are you sleeping on? (cot, mattress, ground)
Luno Mattress (pro: custom fit for inside 4runner or can use in tent, can unzip to split into 2 separate mattresses and safe for dogs con: small and for 6’2) - $349
    DeepSleep Mattress
    Blankets/Pillows/Sleeping Bags
sleeping bag (pro: comfy, built in pillow most of the time con: takes up ALOT of space)
blankets (pro: not restrictive, doesn't take alot of room con: may not keep warm enough, requires separate pillow

  2. SUV Drawer System

You have limited space to store stuff and when you going offroad you need to make sure everything is secure. Here are some great options to help you get secure and organized.. but you better have some deep pockets or high limit on credit card cause they aren't cheap
    Air Down Gear Up (ADGU)
I love this system and I like it becauses it doesn't use thick wood panels for the drawer system. So not adding a lot of weight but you can clearly see its high quality. When I price it out for my 4Runner its as low as $4000 and easily up to near $8000.
Interior Dimensions of drawers: 33" L x 15.25" W x 9" H (this allows for storage of 7.5" tall items in the drawers)

    Solid Wood Worx
A more affordable solution that may work. Looks like quality and less than half the cost of ADGU at $2400.

    DFG Offroad
This is even more affordable and appears to be a solid product from reading. It sells for around $1500

    WheelsFeels.com
Seems as an affordable but well built solution coming in around $1300 with free shipping in the United States

  3. Drummond Island

What makes Drummond Island the ORV paradise of Michigan? Is it the miles of routes and trails resting beneath the tree canopy? Is it the scenic view of wildlife? The variety of trails and routes suitable for experts and novices alike? The easily accessed food, lodging, entertainment, service, or emergency aid? The clear signage indicating location, destination, and points of interest?
It’s a riding adventure and the trails are fun. The off road vehicle (ORV) trails on Drummond are some of the most scenic and rugged in Michigan. Drummond’s DNR sponsored trail system is the largest closed  loop ORV system in the state. With over 60 miles of ATV trails and 40 miles of ORV routes there’s a lot to explore!

  4. The Mounds ORV Area

Fun Park worth checking out.  The Mounds is open 365 days a year; however, from March 15 through May 15, all trail areas of the Mounds are closed except for the 8-acre scramble area which is located to the North West of the ticket booth. Trucks are not permitted. ATVs, UTVs and dirt bikes are allowed. All areas of the Mounds will reopen to all vehicles the morning of May 16
    Hours:
    Monday – Saturday: 8:00 am – Sunset
    Sunday: 10:00 am – Sunset

  7. 1979 CJ-7 Frame Off Rebuild

I have always helped my dad where he needed help rebuilding his classic cars. Did I pay attention to what was happening? Not really. I was always busy day dreaming about cute girls and driving. So given that, its surprising I thought I could tackle a rebuild of a 1979 Jeep CJ7 from the ground up. Well I am still attempting this rebuild and this is my comical story to many of you more experienced.

This started off like anything else. My cute girlfriend mentioned how she wanted a Jeep and it stirred up those memories of when I had my 85 CJ7 and my 91 Wrangler and I started missing them and then that turned into a desire and a eventually a must have. So I searched craigslist and found this non-running 1979 Jeep CJ7 for $1495. I know, I paid way to much for it but I was in love, with a dream this was going to be an easy fix to get me behind the steering wheel of a Jeep again.
After I touched my toes while handing the previous owner $1495 for this adventure we loaded it up and headed home. First thing on my plan was to take it apart and find what we needed to do and prioritize (due to cost).
So I put together a First Year plan and Next Year plan to come up with some sort of plan

    First year plans..

get the L6 running before snow fall this year in event we have the horrible Michigan winter we had last year.
Replace the Carpeting with the Bedrug Carpeting ($190) BRCYJ76F
Since its missing a rear bumper, add a M.O.R.E rear bumper with Tire Carrier ($1200) JRB700CJ

    Future plans

Choice of getting body work done or just buy a new Aluminum Body Tub ($4030) 5030 plus a Dash Panel with cutouts ($135) 5150
Depending how bad the frame is, new frame ($1800) CJ7 76 79 but what a job. If we go this route, we would just get the frame then the body tub ($4030) and suspension kit ($1050) and start building the basics. Maybe even through some dana 44 axles with electric lockers and disk brakes in there so we can start running brake lines, fuel lines, electrical lines...
Suspension, kinda leaning towards the ProComp 4" suspension lift ($1050) with a dropped pitman arm ($97) and a transfer case lowering kit ($46). This replaces the worn leaf springs and worn out shocks.

The next day I felt I had to get the Jeep something new on it so it might look better so on September 25, 2014 I ordered

$36.99 - BATTERY TRAY KIT BLK CJ
    $36.99 - TAILGATE HINGE PAIR BLACK 76+ CJ7
$41.99 - AUTOMETER 100PSI OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT
    $ 7.99 - Oil Filter

Of course that should of been enough to start with... you know, the basics but nope had to go one step further

    $799.99 - ROCKHARD REAR BUMPER/TIRE CARRIER FOR 76-06

It obviously needed a couple of other items to replace the 2x4's holding the body up in the back so I also ordered

    $127.00 - 1 INCH POLY BODYLIFT-BLACK 76-79 CJ5&7 KJ04503BK <--these are back ordered
    $100.00 - BODY MOUNT CHANNELS-6 PCS FOR 76-86 CJ BDMNTS 6

Now the credit card is melting from over use, decided to evaluate the floor situation and it turned out that it had no floor boards front drivers side or passenger side or rear seating area where they put a metal piece to cover up all the rust holes and did a horrible job welding it in. Wasn't sure what to do when I'm I have nothing for welding and not a metal fabricater anyhow. Well I did what anyone else would of done in my shoes, looked for answers on Google and found the answer. A new MD Juan Jeep Steel body from Quadratec.

November 3rd, 2014 my dad and best friend Terry came over and helped me cut the body off the old frame to get it ready for the new body when it arrives. We found it easier to cut it into four pieces to make it easier to carry. Oh yea, I may have gotten a bit crazy with the saws all and cut through some of the cross members on the frame. Whoops, my bad.

My cute girlfriend and I start cleaning the frame and axles to try and get some of the heavy rust off.

We are using wire brushes, some sort of chemical that made me about pass out after using it for awhile and a lot of elbow grease and then it happened.
I could see a crack and pressed on it and it collapsed and after tapping on it with a hammer slightly 12" of metal on the side dropped out. After closer inspection, the frame is rotted from the inside out. No sense of spending all this money installing a new body, new fenders, new windshield on an old frame. It's like getting a boob job on a someone who is stuck in a wheel chair. Yea, you look good but what can you do. I found holes in the frame!
The amount of crap that came out of the frame was crazy.

Also during this frame cleanup process I found why they had 2x4's holding up the back.  My guess is they either had too much weight on a hitch (maybe one of those storage bins on a hitch mount), either way, they had too much weight on the back (probably rusted frame) and it took the back part of the frame off.  Here you can see some pictures of there attempt to repair it.
So next to order a frame. I was looking at the TDK (Throttle Down Kustoms) CJ Hybrid frame that supports a CJ body but the suspension of a TJ so coil suspension which will provide a much nicer ride. Of course its $2500 + $800 for shipping and handling and its a major job. Since I have no idea what I'm doing and after talking the TDK owner (Jeremy). He brought up alot of good points, mainly the one where its very very expensive (you have to buy new axels (supporting those coil over springs) and a new suspension kit for a TJ is also a bit pricey. Alot goes on when you move to that suspension. Yes it would be awesome but I probably won't ever do the extreme rock crawling that would facilitate such an awesome/expensive suspension. Yea, I know I may regret not just doing it but its a money thing at this point.

I ordered a new TDK CJ7 wide-track frame with shock towers so I can use my narrow track axles but can switch to a wide track axle later if I want. Also the frame is going to come with the YJ shackel reversal so I can use YJ springs for a softer ride.

On the left you can see it as it arrived (minus the frame that was holding everything in place.
On the right is after I sprayed the inside with Eastwood Undercoating spray and apply por-15 black paint.
2 weeks before it shows up. ($2105 for frame + $515 shipping) I wanted it to be galvanized but the place Jeremy from TDK sends the frames to get galvanized is shut down for upgrades until beginning of 2015... oh well, if I did decide to get it done there are a whole two choices in Michigan

    Galvanizers Inc
    12600 Arnold, Redford, MI 48239
    (313) 535-2600

    National Galvanizing
1500 Telb St, Monroe, MI 48162
    (734) 243-1882

Then while laying in bed I ordered a skyjacker softride suspension kit and new motor mounts. Once Credit Card Santa delivers all these goodies I can then begin swapping everything over from the old frame. To prep I'm going to start loosening everything up since everything is so rusted up, it takes longer than normal.
    FILE ATTACH MANUAL
There was much time spent on trying to figure out what axles did I get with this CJ7.

I thought the rear was an AMC 20 (which I heard is REALLY REALLY bad because its a 2 piece very breakable design). I was correct, it was a AMC 20
I found some solutions to fix the two piece AMC20 axle to make it more robust
    $350 Omix-ADA 16530.20 AXLE KT 1-PC NT A20 16530.20 - 7071K
    OR
    $361 Yukon Gear & Axle YCJS [21393]

So I'm off to Unlimited Offroad to rebuilt my front axle and do one of these repairs on my rear axle.
  8. Michigan DNR

Here is a great start to see what Michigan DNR has deemed ORV trails that you could enjoy.
    https://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-350-79119_79148---,00.html

  9. Offroad parks typically require offroad vehicles with safety belts to have an offroad flag/whip attached to the front of the vehicle but the question is how?
Rago Fabrication has a clevis mount you could use if that is available

Pretty simple install and run yea around $60

Another option is if you have a bullbar on your front bumper you could utilize something like this from Nilight

This is also a very easy install and runs only about $14.

On the 5thgen 4Runner with the c4 Front Bumper.. the Rago Fabrication mount to clevis does not work. You could get the mount to connect (even though super tight fit) but the whip would be pointing almost straight out instead of straight vertical. Just not good.
Haven't tried the bullbar attachment yet.
A third option is getting some flatbar from Home Depot, some tractor implement paint and some gas pipe insulation (1/2") and mounting this flatbar somehow. I ordered the materials today and should get by Thursday. Cutting it close since my first event I need this flag is on Saturday.

  10. Compare K5 to JK Size

Some of us with K5’s would like to show the everyday Jeep’s that we can hang with them on the trails but our biggest issue is we are so much bigger than they are.
So stock JK vs stock K5 (2nd gen)
Length: 13.8 ft   vs   16.1ft (diff 2.5 ft)
Width: 6.2 ft  vs  6.6 ft (diff 4″)
Height: 5.11 ft  vs  6.2 ft (diff 3″)
Wheelbase: 7.11 ft  vs  8.9 ft (diff 10″)
so not a HUGE difference but none the less the K5 is bigger but the huge difference is..  they aren’t nearly as common. Everyone can go buy a jeep done and ready to go on the trails. It’s getting harder and harder to find a K5 thats in good condition and once you do, parts are getting harder and harder to find.  Most offroad supply stores are focused 99% on new Jeeps. Why? Because everyone has one…  not very unique.

  11. GAIA GPS

One of the most popular Trail making systems on the planet is GAIA GPS and I believe once you start diving into it you’ll see why so many adventurers utilize this powerful system.
Some great features is GAIA GPS supports multiple operating systems (IOS, Android, etc) and what I love is you can plan your entire route via a web browser and save the GPX file to share with your friends or club etc..
Here are some high level screenshots of the web version
    BASICS
At the bottom left you can see I’m on Search which means I can search for a trail or a city or something or just browse

Now I would suggest clicking on Filter and select Offroading and unselect Hiking so you get better results.  Obviously you can filter on more if you want.

Now if you click on Saved these are either routes you saved or you imported from someone else.

HOW DO YOU IMPORT A FILE (.gpx or other)??
On the bottom left I click on Saved then you see the + button at the top, I click on that.

You get presented a menu like the one below

Click on Import File and browse to your .gpx or kml or whatever file and it will show up on the left which you can organize into folders to keep it cleaner.  To move your imported files you click to the left of the imported file (the three …) and select Choose Parent Folder.

CAN YOU SHARE YOUR FILES FROM GAIA?
Yes you can and its pretty easy to do.  You can share an entire folder with all your files OR you can share just a file.  When you are on a file (example below is I’m on the UP Michigan trip.gpx) you can click on Share (right next to the Edit button) and you can add Collaborators, you can share the link or you can Export the File (GPX is the most common and widely used).

    VIDEO TUTORIAL
  12. Nothing Wrong with Backyard Fun

We have a small bit of land in Davison, MI with a beginner offroad trail that at times requires some technique to get through some tight spots.  I had my wife drive our 97 Chevy 1500 pickup through the trail to see how these new blacklion tires do.  Not too bad but if the mud is thick they cake pretty bad and won't clear out.  So she got stuck

Now at the point of pulling my wife out of the hole she put our son's truck in

So now that I got the K5 out I can’t just drive it back and let her sit for the rest of the winter without a little fun. Not only that but a regular tradition for the past few years is going to the Mounds Thanksgiving morning for some fun while the Turkey is on the Big Green Egg smoking.
So long story short, wanted to make sure the K5 is running ok. As my wife takes the bypass, I go through the more fun course and to be honest, no way was that 97 going to to make it through even though from the video it probably doesn’t look that bad but it was pretty slick and that mud that just sticks like a slimy booger.

  13. Vehicle Modifications

A common question is "what modifications should I make to my vehicle to make it trail worthy?"  Reading the offroad magazines, you might think gears, lockers, armor and a radical suspension is required.  Below is our take on what it takes to Fool Around offroad.  Note that modifications are listed in order of importance and each level assumes you have done everything in the previous step.

    Vehicle selection
Before doing any modifications, make sure you are starting with a good platform.  Most any short wheelbase vehicle whose transfercase has high and low range works well on the trails in our area.  The Jeep Wrangler is by far the most popular choice, but you would be fine with a Toyota pickup and 4Runner, Nissan Pathfinder, Suzuki Samurai, Chevrolet Tracker, S10 pickup/Blazer, Jeep Cherokee etc.  Full size pickups, Blazers and Broncos are too wide for the trails we run.

    First step
A stock vehicle will go amazing places.  Get a CB radio.  Install tow hooks front and rear if you don't already have them.  Get your tools and recovery equipment and figure out how to store them securely.  Get the biggest, knobbest tires you can fit. Consider a second set of tires just for the trail if this is a daily driver.  Wheel it in this state for a couple of years to see if the sport is really for you.  You will learn a lot of off road skills.  Spend time watching other rigs and figuring out what your ultimate goal is; mild, moderate or wild and most importantly - how big of a tire do you want.  Once you have made this decision, you can start to modify your rig without wasting money on mods that you end up replacing later.

    Mild build
Most likely a daily driver, at home on easy trails, but capable of moderate trails.  The good news is that after your "First Step" you already have a mild rig.  You might think about adding a selectable rear locker like an ARB, improving body armor with rocker protection and ground clearance with "belly up" skid plates.

    Moderate build
With this target in mind, you are probably going to keep the stock axles.  Your first modification should be a roll cage.  Then find out how big of a tire your stock axles can support and choose a tire this size or smaller.  Then figure out how much lift (or better yet, sheet metal trimming) you need to fit it.  These tires will need lower gears and you should add a rear locker at the same time.  You might want to think about a winch and front locker or limited slip.  You will begin to see the wisdom of a tow rig and trailer to get home should you break something on the trail.

    Wild build
At this level, you are probably talking about a dedicated trail rig.  You should keep it street legal as some venues require driving on local roads to get to the trail head.  You should mount seats to the roll cage and install four point seat belts.  Heavier duty axles, front and rear lockers, and a winch are mandatory.  Once tire size goes over 38" you will need a hydraulic ram to assist steering.
  14. Vehicle Equipment

    Basic Equipment
Every vehicle should carry these and they should be securely fastened down (like everything else).  You should be able to reach the flashlight and fire extinguisher from your seat.  Factory seat belts do not release if you are upside down (don't ask how we know this).
    CB radio
    Flashlight
First aid kit (include any of your family's special needs like EpiPens or insulin)
    Fire extinguisher
    Complete change of clothes
    Full size spare tire
    Jack
Wrench to remove tire (and key if you have locking lug nuts)
    Tow hooks front and rear
    Specialty tools for your vehicle

    Good to have
With the exception of the Hi-Lift, every vehicle really should have these too.
Tow strap (no hooks on ends!)
    Shackle
Short piece of chain with washers and bolt that fits through middle links
    Small tarp or blanket
    Hand towel(s)
    Rachet strap
    High lift jack

    Basic Tools
Regardless of your mechanical skills you should carry these to fix your rig of someone else's.
    Philips and flat screwdrivers
    Adjustible wrench
Set of combination wrenches (metric or SAE to fit your vehicle)
    Pliers
    Ball peen hammer
    Duct tape
    Zip ties
    Small roll heavy wire
    Spare fuses
    Fan belt(s)

    Optional Tools
These are really more for the skilled mechanic, but consider carrying a few of these as well.
    Schrader valve and removal tool
    Chisel
    Punch
    Socket set
    Small vice grip
    Channel locks
    Allen wrenchs
Torx bits (if your vehicle is cursed with them)
    Stubby and offset screwdrivers
    Hacksaw
    File
    Teflon tape
    WD-40 or wire dry spray
    Scissors
    Electrical tester
    Wire strippers
    Electrical wire, tape and  connectors
    Misc. nuts and bolts
Extra fluids (motor oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, ATF, gear lube)
  15. Here are some tips (always growing) of items to bring with you on your adventure
Carry multiple way to make a fire
    Fire can be used to:
    provide heat

  17. GL4WDA WinterBlast 2026

This is the one event Great Lakes Four Wheel Drive Association hosts as a fund raiser. It was done very well and everyone was very polite and helpful. The below video is what was captured on the iPhone when it wasn't overheating (which i believe was due to running OnX Offroad to track where we went).
The group we were with was the "Pink Group" which was for the minimal scratches or otherwise known as pin stripping due to the branches along the trail producing a sound of nails on the chalkboard as it glides across your paint. The first few were tough to accept then you remember you are here to offroad in Michigan and in Michigan we got woods. I don't regret it at all and neither did the others that had new vehicles enjoying the same sounds as mother nature made her presence.
