  1. On a Nevera hypercar, Rimac has elegantly integrated a charge status indicator into the bodywork with a trio of lights on each rear fender, just behind the side intakes. But Porsche may have found an even better way, according to a new patent filed in Germany, reports Motor1. Instead of light fixtures, the patent proposes integrating a technology that would allow racing stripes to appear and fade to indicate various things, like the charge status or even the drive mode of the vehicle. To achieve this, Porsche proposes using an electronic paper or paramagnetic coating, calling to mind BMW's use of color-changing E Ink. Porsche Has Many Potential Uses for Its New Tech Porsche Much like electrochromic glass that can change opacity depending on the electrical current applied to it, so these stripes could instantly change color depending on Porsche's requirements for the technology, and since a film or coating would be relatively easy to apply, there are plenty of potential uses. For example, a racecar could have entirely different liveries depending on the competition or country in which it is racing, a road-going EV could show different colors while recharging to show how much the battery has been replenished, or something like a GT3 RS could show different colors to indicate whether it's accelerating, braking, or heading for the pits on a track day. We could also see Porsche using such a technology to allow the wealthiest customers of the Sonderwunsch department to have multiple themes for their cars, allowing them to change the look of their 911s on a whim. Related: Porsche Is Developing a Shifter That Acts Like a Manual or Automatic It may also have a safety benefit on the road, with a car potentially capable of changing its color or displaying messages when the driver encounters a hazard, like an accident or ice on the asphalt. And using a smartphone app, a customer may be able to see which tire has lower pressure or which wheel is misaligned through a change in color on that corner of the car. Finally, law enforcement could use such a system on unmarked cars, changing what looks like a normal car into a police car at the touch of a button. Potential Drawbacks to Porsche's New Patent Porsche There are several issues with this idea, not least of which is the added cost and complexity of integrating such a technology into the production process. There's also the question of whether such a system could safely be ceramic-coated or otherwise protected from the elements, and how it might be repaired if damage were sustained. Also, if this system is not automatically controlled, we can see criminals using instantly changeable aesthetics nefariously, perhaps to evade law enforcement. But as always, a patent is not evidence of production intent, and automakers often file to protect clever innovations without any use therefore being planned. Then again, Rolls-Royce seems to be readying a new kind of hood opening that was patented late last year for its production electric SUV, so sometimes, these ideas are a glimpse into the future. 2. BYD launched its Denza Z9 GT in Europe with a bang. Daniel Craig, the most recognisable face of James Bond, fronted the campaign. The car itself is genuinely impressive: a 1,140-horsepower electric shooting brake that charges from 10 to 97 percent in nine minutes, covers up to 372 miles on the WLTP cycle, and crab-walks into parking spaces. In China, it starts at around $39,300. In Europe, that same car starts from roughly $134,500. That’s more than three times the price. Europe's tariff wall on Chinese EVs is real and significant, but it does not explain a gap this wide. Denza View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article What the Numbers Actually ReflectThe EU's countervailing duties on Chinese-built EVs sit at 17 percent for BYD, on top of a standard 10 percent import tariff. That combined 27 percent bite adds roughly $10,500 to a $39,000 base. Shipping, homologation, suspension retuning for European roads, dealer networks, warranty infrastructure, and VAT stack on top of that. Still, none of this math produces a number anywhere near $134,000. Denza View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Analysis from S&P Global Mobility suggests the price gap between Chinese models at home and in Europe is unlikely to be explained solely by import tariffs and shipping costs, pointing instead to a deliberate OEM pricing strategy. BYD is choosing to price the Denza here. At $134,500, the Z9 GT just undercuts the Porsche Panamera. That is not a coincidence. This is a car placed deliberately beside Europe's most aspirational names, not beneath them. The "Cheap Chinese EV" Narrative Has a Shelf LifeThere is a persistent assumption that Chinese EVs are inherently budget products. At the mass-market end, BYD has weaponised cost efficiency brilliantly, with analysts identifying a sustainable 25 percent manufacturing cost advantage over traditional European rivals. But the Denza Z9 GT is aimed at a different buyer entirely. It is not meant to be another race-to-the-bottom product. It is built to compete on prestige, technology, and desirability. BYD Lexus, Genesis, and Infiniti have already demonstrated the enormous challenge of cracking the European premium market. Each arrived with technically strong products. None fully broke through. Brand trust at this price point is built slowly, and buyers spending six figures tend to be conservative about unfamiliar badges. BYD knows this. The triple-the-price strategy is partly about surviving that reality, using the margin to fund European infrastructure, retail expansion, and the kind of marketing that put James Bond in the front seat. Tariffs made it more expensive. Ambition made it this expensive. View the full article
  3. Genesis Takes Aim at AMG, M, and RSGenesis is still a young automaker, but it's already making some of the top cars in their respective classes. Its models have won over critics, the owners are generally happy, and the continuous push for improvement is worthy of applause. 20 years ago, the idea of a standalone Korean luxury marque was almost unimaginable, but Genesis aced its homework, and the results are showing. Now, it's taking aim at the luxury performance heavyweights from Germany. In late 2025, Genesis launched the Magma brand, and there are several models to look forward to down the line. It had already announced a model – the GV60 Magma, which will arrive this summer. Adam Lynton/Autoblog View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article The GV60 MagmaIt's easy to dismiss the GV60 Magma as a posher version of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. The thing is, it's much more than that. While the two cars share the same basic architecture, the Magma takes a different route with an extra dose of luxury. Whereas the Hyundai places greater emphasis on rowdiness, the Genesis elevates it into a more refined package. Of course, there are some sporting bits here and there, so we couldn't really call it a sleeper. Its slippery body is adorned with very visible aero enhancements, and the orange brake calipers proudly show off its more athletic intentions. The cabin is standard GV60 fare, though there are lashings of suede and orange highlights to set it apart from non-Magma versions. Power output is exactly the same as the Ioniq 5 N. That means 641 hp, 583 lb-ft of torque, and an estimated 0 to 60 time of under four seconds. But outright speed isn't the main highlight here. Instead, the GV60 Magma flexes its intelligent drive modes, and we'll likely see it in future Magma products. Genesis GT and Sprint ModesLike the Ioniq 5 N, the GV60 Magma has a dedicated button that lets the user scroll through various drive modes. Simply dubbed the Magma button, it houses GT and Sprint modes, both of which are pretty clever. GT Mode firms up the suspension, sharpens up the steering, and puts the motor and e-LSD in a higher setting. The all-wheel drive system also switches to rear-wheel drive speeds pick up, but reverts to all-wheel drive the deeper the pedal input. As for Sprint Mode, it puts everything in its most aggressive arrangement. Everything is set to Sport + mode, stability control intervention is further reduced, and it stays in all-wheel drive at all times, constantly shifting power between the front and rear wheels. Engaging either mode activates the auto-boost function, giving the driver a 15-second window to unleash all the horses once the accelerator is fully depressed. Sprint Mode then unlocks launch mode, race mode, and the virtual gear shifts. Adam Lynton/Autoblog Think of GT and Sprint as a 'set and forget' mode that eliminates the need to dig into the infotainment system to configure it. Mind you, there is still a wide variety of individual adjustments that can be made, but pressing the Magma button simplifies most of them. That said, we'll only know how it works once we get behind the wheel of one. But given how good the Ioniq 5 N already is, we have even greater expectations from the GV60 Magma. 4. Keeping The Tradition AliveEvery automotive manufacturer aims for true brand loyalty: a repeat customer, and even better, the whole family across generations staying with one brand. That type of legacy buyer is tough to have nowadays, with an ever-growing list of new car brands and a widening variety of preferences. Which is why when stories come along of true loyalists, we can't help but be in awe. Just like a family from Canada who've spent most of their lives as Ford people. Ford View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Historical SignificanceBill Knapp is the main character in this story, as he set out to fully restore a classic 1936 Ford pickup and started from the ground up. What makes Bill's story even more interesting is that the Knapp family has a close relationship with Ford. The Patriarch, Bill's two brothers, nephew, and sister have either worked for or continue to work with the Blue Oval. It took a full seven years for Bill to complete his restoration journey of the pickup, but he claims every moment calling junkyards and even handcrafting some components himself led to a trip down his family's storied history with the brand. Bill's sister, Mary, emailed Ford executives about the Knapp's story. She says that every time she sees the truck, it reminds her of all the family barbecues spent reminiscing about each person's favorite Ford model. Bill's father, Leo, began working for Ford in the 1930s, during one of the brand's peak periods of dominance. The Pickup is a continuation version of the Model TT, which was a converted Model T. The pickup, though, looked towards the next generation and went with an Art Deco design. It was powered by a 221-cubic-inch V8 that produced 85 horsepower. The truck sold 820,000 throughout its production run. Ford View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Powering ThroughBill used to own a 1936 Ford Pickup back in the day, but lent it to the community parade and said they could keep it as a service vehicle. He never stopped missing his truck, so when a good friend and car restorer, Shawn Dixon, tracked down a potential restoration project, Bill went all in despite the beat-up condition. A car this old made sourcing parts an issue; most 1936 model trucks were cut and modified into hotrods, most with more powerful engines. Because some parts were near-impossible to find, Knapp and Dixon fabricated some themselves, including the fenders, dashboard, door panels, and even reupholstered the seats. Under the hood is a custom high-performance V8 from a company in Georgia, which Bill says was the perfect last touch to the build. Ford View the full article

  6. Executive SpecThe De Tomaso Pantera remains one of the more distinctive icons in automotive history, combining Italian styling with an American V8 powertrain. One MY1972 example is currently listed on Bring a Trailer, and this particular car is made even more special by its provenance, as it is currently owned by Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Farley. This “Pre-L” 1972 De Tomaso Pantera was delivered new to Ford Aerospace’s Aeronutronic division as a pool vehicle before being registered to a private owner in Ventura, California, in July 1974. It then spent nearly two decades at the Yankee Candle Car Museum in Massachusetts and was later sold on BaT in 2018, before Farley acquired it six years later. Since leaving the museum, the car has undergone extensive rework, with the seller noting that $45,000 was spent under the Ford CEO's care. Bring a Trailer Bringing It Up to SpeedExterior-wise, the wedge-shaped car received a paint correction, and clear front corner lenses were added after it sustained damage during a test drive in 2018. It was also fitted with QA1 double-adjustable coilovers, while its power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes were overhauled, and the unassisted steering rack was replaced. Inside, the bucket seats received replacement bolsters and were reupholstered in black vinyl with houndstooth cloth inserts. Under the current ownership, the car also gained a Ferrero steering wheel, an aftermarket stereo and speakers, a new headliner, and retrimmed side panels. The mid-mounted Cleveland V8 was rebuilt by Cobra Automotive of Connecticut in 2023, with the cylinders bored 0.030 inches over and static compression raised to a claimed 11.2:1 through the use of aftermarket internals such as Sportsman flat-top pistons. Output figures were not disclosed, though power is sent to the rear wheels through a ZF five-speed manual transaxle. In addition, the car is fitted with 15-inch Campagnolo cast magnesium wheels finished in bronze Cerakote, along with an upgraded cooling system installed during previous ownership. Bring a Trailer Not Exactly CheapGiven the work done, it is no surprise that the current bid stands at $126,000. The Pantera is located in Glendale, Wisconsin, with the listing set to expire on Thursday. The odometer shows about 34,000 miles, with roughly 2,000 of those added under current ownership. The seller notes that Farley loves to drive regularly, though his attention now appears to be split between enjoying analog performance cars like this and the GT40 and tackling far bigger challenges at Ford, including the project to build affordable electric trucks that target a $30,000 price point. 7. Mercedes’ Sunroof Problem Isn’t Going AwayExploding panoramic sunroofs have been a lingering problem for Mercedes-Benz – one that’s been hanging over its head for years. What began as a handful of owner complaints has already grown into a class-action lawsuit that’s still making its way through the courts. The class-action lawsuit focuses on claims that some Mercedes models have panoramic sunroofs that can suddenly explode. It was filed in 2023 by plaintiffs Natalie Bolling, Shawn Hale, Latoya Foster-Gittens, and Lisa Phlegar. Owners talk about hearing a sharp, gunshot-like crack, then watching glass pour into the cabin – even at highway speeds. The complaint says this can happen without any obvious cause, turning a high-end feature into a real safety risk. Mercedes-Benz insists there’s no solid evidence of a defect and says most of these incidents are caused by factors such as road debris. But after years of back-and-forth, both sides are still digging in for a long fight. What the Lawsuit ClaimsThe core of the lawsuit is simple: the design of the panoramic sunroof might be the problem. Plaintiffs say that using thinner tempered glass and certain manufacturing methods makes these sunroofs more likely to fail, even in everyday driving. What makes this lawsuit different is that it covers a wide range of Mercedes models, not just one vehicle or a single production run. The claim is that the same defect could affect a lot of owners. Plaintiffs also say Mercedes knew about the problem as early as 2006, based on customer complaints and internal reports, but didn’t warn buyers or issue any recalls. Of note, the automaker did recall certain units over the same issue in 2023. Mercedes-Benz C-Class (2011–present) Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class (2011–present) Mercedes-Benz R-Class (2011–2012) Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class (2014–present) Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class (2011–present) Mercedes-Benz S-Class (2011–present) Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2011–present) Mercedes-Benz M-Class (2012–present) Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (2011–2019) Mercedes-Benz GL-Class (2011–present) Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class (2012–present) Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class (2013–2020) Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class (2011–present) Mercedes-Maybach S 600 (2015–2017) Mercedes-Benz SLC-Class (2013–2020) Mercedes is fighting these claims in court, saying there’s no proof of a real defect or any cover-up. The company also argues it met its warranty obligations and points out that some cars kept working fine even after the sunroof shattered. AOL On What Happens NextThe case has already passed its first big test. A federal judge let some of the main claims move forward, while tossing out others. That means the legal battle is still very much alive. With that ruling, the most important claims – such as alleged defects and consumer protection issues – remain on the table. But the court is clearly narrowing things down, not just letting every argument through. Next up is discovery, where both sides will dig through internal documents, engineering choices, and reports of what actually happened. This phase could be the turning point that shows whether the problem is widespread or just a handful of unlucky cases. View the full article
  8. A Familiar Truck, With a Not-So-Familiar UpgradeIt’s no secret that the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is due for a full redesign, with the next-generation model expected to land later this year as a 2027 model. Between spy shots, early renderings, and design leaks, we already have a rough idea of where things are heading visually. But the bigger story is what’s changing inside the cabin. Apparently, the 2027 Silverado High Country will finally get a feature that’s been exclusive to its more upscale GMC sibling. It might seem like a minor update, but it hints at Chevrolet rethinking what drivers should expect from a Silverado. Chevrolet/USPTO A Long-Overdue Comfort FeatureAccording to GM Authority, the 2027 Silverado High Country will offer massaging front seats for the first time. It’s not a headline-grabbing feature, but it addresses a clear gap in the current Silverado’s comfort options. Of note, the outgoing Silverado doesn’t offer massage functionality at all, even in its most expensive trims. Meanwhile, the GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate has had it for a while, reinforcing GMC’s positioning as the more upscale alternative within General Motors’ truck lineup. It’s not confirmed yet if the feature will be standard or optional, but its addition shows Chevrolet is taking comfort more seriously as buyers expect more from their full-size trucks. AutoYa/YouTube Bigger Changes Beneath the SurfaceThe massaging seats are just one piece of a larger update. The new Silverado will get a more refined cabin, better materials, and a bigger focus on in-cabin tech. Patent images also point to a more modern, layered dashboard design. Engine updates are coming, too. The 2.7-liter turbo is expected to get more power, and the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel could offer a long-range setup aiming for up to 1,000 miles per tank. There’s also talk of a new small-block V8 and a hybrid option as GM brings electrification back to its trucks. Both the next-gen Silverado 1500 and the GMC Sierra 1500 are expected to debut later this year, with the 2027 models hitting showrooms. 9. The Supercar Before SupercarsThe rivalry between Lamborghini and Ferrari is widely recognized in automotive circles, with the former introducing its first true contender in 1966 with the Miura – widely regarded as the world’s first supercar. Now, a report from The Supercar Blog suggests the Italian marque could revive the iconic nameplate this year to mark its 60th anniversary. However, the revival is expected to take the form of a special edition, similar to the Aventador Miura – a tribute unveiled in 2016 to mark the Miura’s 50th anniversary. This time, the Revuelto, the Aventador’s successor, is reportedly set to receive a Miura-inspired edition, which could debut at Pebble Beach in August. Lamborghini Classic Inspiration, Modern ExecutionThe report states that the Revuelto Miura Edition could feature a two-tone exterior, echoing the Miura’s signature look. Inside, the cabin is expected to include retro-inspired touches, such as special-edition badging. Given these changes, the model will likely be priced above the standard Revuelto, which already starts at over $600,000. As for the powertrain, no mechanical changes are expected. For reference, the Revuelto uses a 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 paired with a tri-motor setup, producing a combined 1,001 horsepower. It is one of the few models to retain a V12 amid increasingly stringent emissions regulations, alongside cars like the Aston Martin Vanquish and Ferrari 12Cilindri. Kyle Edward Not the Only Card to PlayThe Revuelto Miura Edition could be just one of four models Lamborghini plans to introduce this year. These may simply be new variants of the existing lineup, especially considering that the Urus, the brand’s best-selling model, is unlikely to go away anytime soon, while the Temerario has just succeeded the Huracán. In addition, the brand’s first EV, the Lanzador, has reportedly been delayed, with the company now indicating it could arrive as a plug-in hybrid instead of a fully electric model. Following the Aventador Miura’s production run of 50 units, the Revuelto Miura will reportedly be limited to 60 examples, in line with their respective anniversary celebrations. The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance takes place during Monterey Car Week in California, where Lamborghini is expected to reveal new developments, while announcements are also anticipated at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K. in July. 17. (Photos by Kim Fuller & Ken Hughes) • Leah Pruett closed out Pomona Winternationals qualifying with a strong run, but her first No. 1 qualifier since 2023 and 16th in her career was clinched on the strength of Friday’s 3.724 at 329.75-mph in her Rinnai Tankless Water Heaters-backed Top Fuel Dragster. Since there are only 15 Top Fuelers, he’ll get a first-round bye on Sunday to open eliminations, Pruett has a great opportunity to pick up her first victory of the season. “We’re thrilled with where our performance is at and the confidence and momentum is building with this team,” Pruett said. “Yeah, I’m happy. I have my own work to do, but man, we’re moving and grooving and looking forward to eliminations.”

Originally from Redlands, California, Pruett has two previous Winternationals wins in 2017 and 2021. J.R. Todd put himself in a great spot to win the 1,000th Funny Car race in NHRA history, powering to the No. 1 spot for the first time in five years with a run of 3.896 at 335.32 in his DHL Toyota GR Supra-bodied funny car. He’ll open eliminations against Blake Alexander, looking for his first win of the season, but the past champion was thrilled with Saturday’s success, finishing with his 15th No. 1 qualifier and first since the 2021 campaign. “It just shows that the performance of our DHL hot rod, that it’s coming around thanks to Dickie (Venables) and Todd (Smith),” Todd said. “It was awesome to see that 3.89 come up on the scoreboard when I went by, but I’m just happy for the guys; they put in so much hard work back there in the pit area. “I saw the 1,000th Funny Car winner trophy on the wall up there in Q3. That’d be an awesome accomplishment. There’s been a lot of great Funny Car drivers and it was pretty awesome to see Shawn [Langdon, Top Fuel teammate] get the [1,000th Top Fuel win] last year in Charlotte. So, if we could pull that off and put that trophy next to his at the shop, I think that would make Connie [Kalitta, team owner] really happy. I love coming here. There’s a lot of history at this place and hopefully we can add some more history tomorrow.” NHRA Phoenix winner Ron Capps qualified second after a run of 3.919 at 330.88 and Jordan Vandergriff took third with a 3.925 at 329.99. In Pro Stock, Greg Anderson took the No. 1 spot for the second time this season and the 142nd time in his career, improving on Friday’s run with a stellar pass of 6.516 at 209.69 in his Hendrick Cars-backed Camaro. He set the In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip track record for elapsed time (6.476) at this event one year ago. Anderson will open eliminations against Kenny Delco, looking for his first victory of the season and his 17th career win in Pomona. In Legacy Nitro Funny Car at the Winternationals, Sunday will bring the second round of eliminations, with Geoff Monise, driving the Quarter Pounder Firebird taking a first round victory over Eily Stafford in Don Nelson’s California Hustler Firebird. 18. Six-time Pro Stock world champion Greg Anderson is one of the most decorated drivers in the history of the sport, and in qualifying for the 66th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals, he notched another triumph with the 142nd pole of his career. Anderson added the No. 1 qualifier award to the pile there at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip, inching ever closer to Funny Car legend John Force’s record of 167. For now, the most winning driver in the history of Pro Stock is dialed into what it’s going to take to turn that No. 1 in to his 113th win. “We made some great runs this weekend with my HendrickCars.com Chevrolet, and the only run we didn’t do well was that last one – I was on a good pass, it felt great, but it seemed like I drove over a banana peel and the car turned 90 degrees when I got it into high gear,” shared Anderson. “There’s no sense in risking anything, so I shut it off. Hopefully, tomorrow will be all-HendrickCars.com, all-KB Titan Racing.” Anderson knows the potential of the historic Southern California dragstrip. He set the In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip track record for elapsed time (6.476) at this event one year ago, and he did it on the pass that came with the final-round win light. As the defending event titlist, the six-time world champ is eager to defend the title and add a 17th Pomona win to his resume. He currently stands as the second-most winning professional driver of all time at this facility, and one more triumph would tie him with Funny Car legend John Force for most overall. “That’s pretty damn cool,” said Anderson. “Anytime you can match John Force, that’s beyond crazy and one hell of an honor. I’m going to keep digging, keep trying, and see if I can get one up on him.” Anderson is off to a strong start with three incredible runs that kept him ahead of the field. In the first session, he flew to a 6.583, 209.52 that was good for the No. 1 spot. He continued to clock low elapsed time of the session through each of the next two rounds, recording a 6.544, 209.39 followed by a 6.516, 209.69 in the third qualifier. He’s set to square off with veteran racer Kenny Delco in the first round. “I love racing here, and as long as the weather holds out, I have a great shot at getting that NHRA 75th anniversary Diamond Wally tomorrow,” said Anderson. Eliminations at the 66th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip. 19. Top Fuel’s Doug Kalitta continued to rule the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge on Saturday at In-N-Out Pomona Dragstrip, winning the bonus race for a second straight time after beating Maddi Gordon on the final round as part of the 66th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals. Matt Hagan (Funny Car) and Dallas Glenn (Pro Stock) won the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, while Leah Pruett (Top Fuel), J.R. Todd (Funny Car) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) all qualified No. 1 at the third of 20 races during the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season. Kalitta has simply been dominant in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge the past two years, winning for the seventh time since the start of 2025, with Saturday’s coming after going 3.747-seconds at 333.66 mph in his Mac Tools dragster to hold off the rookie sensation Gordon. Saturday success has proven beneficial for the Kalitta Motorsports team, as the reigning world champion entered the weekend as the points leader. Already the winningest Top Fuel driver at Pomona, he’ll look to win at the historic track for the eighth time on Sunday. “I think the fans like racing on Saturday. I think it’s cool just to be able to just try to outrun the people you raced the previous race, and winning these things on Saturday is huge momentum for everybody on our team,” Kalitta said. “Every time we go up there, regardless of what we’re doing with somebody in the other lane, I’m always just trying to get the win light to come on in our lane. “The car got to about half track, and it was really cool because you can tell that the tires aren’t slipping and it’s hooked up one-to-one. I knew I had a good shot at getting the win. Tomorrow, it’s just one round at a time. Everybody’s tough, first round to fourth round, if you can make it that far.” Leah Pruett closed out qualifying with a strong run, but her first No. 1 qualifier since 2023 and 16th in her career was clinched on the strength of Friday’s 3.724 at 329.75-mph in her 12,000-horsepower Rinnai Tankless Water Heaters dragster. She’ll get a first-round bye on Sunday to open eliminations and a race after advancing to the final round, Pruett has a great opportunity to pick up her first victory of the season. “We’re thrilled with where our performance is at and the confidence and momentum is building with this team,” Pruett said. “Yeah, I’m happy. I have my own work to do, but man, we’re moving and grooving and looking forward to eliminations tomorrow.” Josh Hart, who won in Gainesville, qualified second with a run of 3.733 at 336.15, and Phoenix winner Shawn Langdon took third after going 3.745 at 338.51. Four-time Funny Car world champion Matt Hagan continued his own success in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, knocking off Paul Lee in the final round on Saturday with a run of 3.940 at 329.58 in his 12,000-horsepower Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage Dodge SRT Hellcat. It’s the first bonus race win of the season for Hagan, who won the overall Mission #2Fast2Tasty trophy last year in Funny Car. He made a pair of solid runs on Saturday, which could again bode well for a Sunday victory. “It’s a race inside of a race, and I hope I used up all my adrenaline for today,” Hagan said. “It’s cool, what Mission does and to be able to win some money for the crew guys and scoop up the points, it’s exciting. We’ve got a great race car this year, and I’m excited to see what we can do with it. This is one of the little accolades that we get to put up on the shelf, but I think there’s a lot more. “I’ve been dreaming about getting three trophies: the Mission Challenge, the event trophy and that 1,000th trophy Funny Car trophy, so there’s a lot to be had. That’s wishful thinking, though, because these Funny Cars are super humbling.” J.R. Todd put himself in a great spot to win the 1,000th Funny Car race in NHRA history, powering to the No. 1 spot for the first time in five years with a run of 3.896 at 335.32 in his 12,000-horsepower DHL Toyota GR Supra. He’ll open eliminations against Blake Alexander, looking for his first win of the season, but the past champion was thrilled with Saturday’s success, finishing with his 15th No. 1 qualifier and first since the 2021 campaign. “It just shows that the performance of our DHL hot rod, that it’s coming around thanks to Dickie [Venables] and Todd [Smith],” Todd said. There’s a lot of history at this place and hopefully we can add some more history tomorrow.” Phoenix winner Ron Capps qualified second after a run of 3.919 at 330.88 and Jordan Vandergriff took third with a 3.925 at 329.99. In Pro Stock, Dallas Glenn remained undefeated in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge in 2026, defeating Aaron Stanfield in the final round of the bonus race with a strong run of 6.525 at 208.55 in his RAD Torque Systems Chevrolet Camaro. Glenn, the reigning world champion, won the specialty event in Phoenix and had no issues on Saturday in Pomona, cruising to two impressive performances to get another bonus victory. A year after winning the world title, Glenn continues to perform at an incredible level, as he also looks to win his second straight race. “The Mission Challenge brings that race day mentality and gets you ready for Sunday,” Glenn said. “You go out there and get two win lights and that just builds the confidence to know that you can take out anybody when everything’s right. I feel like I’ve got a lot of confidence in the car and I feel like I’m driving good, where I don’t have to think about anything, and you can just go out there and do it, everything clicks and the car runs well.” Greg Anderson took the No. 1 spot for the second time this season and the 142nd time in his career, improving on Friday’s run with a stellar pass of 6.516 at 209.69 in his HendrickCars.com Camaro. Anderson will open eliminations against Kenny Delco, looking for his first victory of the season and his 17th career win in Pomona. 25. The Sierra Nevada storm originally reported by Autoblog on Friday has escalated significantly. What started as a Winter Storm Warning for Mono County and the Donner Pass area has expanded into warnings covering every major mountain corridor in California, from Lassen County south through Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks. Snowfall totals have been revised sharply upward. Wind forecasts have increased. And the worst of it is arriving now. What Has ChangedThe original forecast called for up to 28 inches above 7,000 feet near Lake Tahoe and up to 4 feet at the highest peaks, with crest winds of 70 to 80 mph. Those numbers have moved. NWS Sacramento issued a Winter Storm Warning at 10:34 AM Friday for the West Slope Northern Sierra and Western Plumas County, calling for 1 to 2 feet of snow above 4,500 feet and 3 to 4 feet at the highest peaks, with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour from Saturday afternoon through Sunday. That Warning runs through 11 PM Sunday. NWS Reno upgraded the Lake Tahoe Basin to a full Winter Storm Warning, with 6 to 10 inches at lake level, 12 to 28 inches above 7,000 feet, and crest gusts now forecast at 90 mph Saturday afternoon with 20 to 35 mph sustained winds for communities around the lake. Mono County remains under a Warning with 70 to 80 mph crest gusts and up to 24 inches along the Sierra crest. And NWS Hanford reissued a Winter Storm Warning at 7:34 PM Friday covering Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks through Sunday night, with 10 to 30 inches of snow above 7,000 feet. NWS Hanford is describing conditions as potentially life-threatening. The net effect: the original story's top-end forecast of 4 feet has been revised by NWS Sacramento above 6,000 feet to 5 feet, and the wind ceiling has jumped from 80 to 90 mph at the crest. The Warning footprint has expanded from two zones to the full 300-mile length of the Sierra. Chain Controls Are Already ActiveAs of Saturday afternoon, Caltrans has chain screenings active on I-80 in both directions. Eastbound trucks are being screened at Applegate in Placer County. Westbound trucks are being screened at Overland Trail Road in Truckee and at Mogul, 5 miles west of Reno. Drivers must have maximum chains in their possession to proceed, and permit loads are prohibited. A high wind advisory is also in effect on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, where travel is not recommended for campers, trailers, or permit loads. These are the early stages. Snow levels are still dropping. By Saturday evening, they will fall to 6,000 to 7,000 feet, and by late Saturday into Sunday morning, they will crash to 4,000 to 4,500 feet. When that happens, the chain controls will tighten, and closures become likely. In February, a similar system shut down a 60-mile stretch of I-80 from Colfax to the Nevada state line and stranded hundreds of drivers for hours. The same scenario is on the table tonight. The HighwaysI-80 over Donner Pass. Already under chain screenings. With 12 to 28 inches forecast at pass elevation, 90 mph crest winds, and snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, a full closure Saturday night through Sunday is the most likely outcome. When I-80 closes over Donner Summit there is no practical detour across the Northern Sierra. Highway 50 to South Lake Tahoe. Echo Summit sits at 7,382 feet, squarely in the heavy snow zone. Highway 50 has the same closure risk as I-80 and fewer plowing resources. When both routes close simultaneously, as they did in February, there is no realistic alternative across the central Sierra. Highway 395 (Eastern Sierra). The Warning names 395 with gusts to 40 to 45 mph and 2 to 6 inches of snow. Higher terrain west of 395 faces 6 to 12 inches. Side roads to Mammoth Mountain and June Mountain will be treacherous at best. Highway 88 through Carson Pass (8,574 feet) and Highway 89. Both exposed to heavy snow and high winds with limited plowing resources. These are typically the first routes to close and the last to reopen. Yosemite corridors (CA-120, CA-140, CA-41). With 10 to 30 inches above 7,000 feet and NWS Hanford warning of visibility below a quarter mile, expect closures and severe restrictions across all Yosemite approach routes through Sunday evening. The Worst WindowSaturday night through Sunday morning. This is when the stronger second system arrives, snow levels crash to 4,000 to 4,500 feet, crest winds peak at 90 mph, and snowfall rates hit their maximum. If you are on a mountain highway during this window, you are likely to be stopped, stranded, or turned around. The heaviest accumulation runs from late Saturday morning through midday Sunday. Sunday afternoon onward the storm weakens, but do not assume roads reopen quickly. Clearing multiple feet of heavy, wet spring snow off a mountain highway takes hours even after the snow stops, and overnight refreezing Sunday into Monday morning will keep surfaces hazardous. What To Do Right NowIf you are on the California side of the Sierra and need to get to Nevada, or vice versa, your window has likely closed. Chain controls are active, conditions are deteriorating, and by tonight the passes will be in full storm mode. If you are already committed to a crossing, Caltrans will require chains on most vehicles above 4,000 to 5,000 feet, and AWD with snow tires may still need chains under R-2 and R-3 controls. Carry chains and know how to install them before you need to. Pack a blanket, flashlight, portable phone charger, water, food, a folding shovel, and cat litter or sand for traction. Fill your tank before entering the mountains. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle, run the engine for heat in 15-minute intervals, crack a window for ventilation, and wait for road crews. For a full breakdown on preparing your vehicle for winter conditions, Autoblog's winter car readiness checklist covers everything from tread depth to emergency kit essentials. Our guide to best practices for driving in snow, ice, and rain is worth reviewing before you attempt any Sierra crossing this weekend. And if this storm is a reminder that your vehicle is not set up for mountain driving, Autoblog's list of the best cars and SUVs for snow and winter driving can help you think about what matters when the roads turn ugly. The safest decision is to wait. Monday midday offers the earliest realistic window for a Sierra crossing once crews have had time to clear and treat the passes.
