Mercedes Baby G-Class Gets Gas Power Because U.S. Dealers Demanded It
ICE or No ICE?A lot of talk and speculation has surrounded a very important upcoming model for Mercedes-Benz. Dubbed as the baby G-class, this smaller version of the legendary SUV has been in production for quite some time now. What was originally slated as a predominantly EV model, Mercedes-Benz has since backtracked on that, confirming two propulsion types: ICE and EV. It has now come to light that one of the world's biggest markets played a role in the decision to sway Mercedes-Benz. SH Proshots/Autoblog The Power of TwoIn a report by Automotive News, Mercedes-Benz dealers were told back in March that this new model is in production. Mercedes-AMG CEO Michael Schiebe said they sought the opinions and insights of stakeholders globally on which powertrains to offer, but noted that U.S. dealers played a vital role in informing the brand's final decision. American dealers were adamant that, apart from electrified options, it would be important to the sales performance to offer an ICE engine. Thankfully, Mercedes agreed. This new, smaller SUV will slot right below the G-Class and will be part of a growing number of new model launches planned by the brand. Schiebe also believes the EV version will play well in Europe, where the new CLA sedan in EV form is posting strong sales numbers. He noted that the key is to be flexible and offer the right balance for the products, which is why a dual option was the eventual choice. SH Proshots/Autoblog A True G-ClassThere's no confirmation yet on exactly when this new car will launch, but it might debut in the first half of 2027. It also remains unclear whether, if at all, ICE and EV powertrains will be ready for the launch date. Even the official name of the baby SUV has not yet been made public. Judging from the spy photos showing its resemblance to the bigger G-Class, it might choose a name related to it. The United States remains a very strong and lucrative market for the G-Class. The SUV sold a record number back in 2025, moving a total of 12,003 units. Needless to say, the upcoming model needs to appeal to Americans in order to succeed. Fortunately, Mercedes has confirmed that this car will share the same characteristics as the larger G, with a bespoke ladder-frame platform for true off-roading. View the full article

Volkswagen Jetta GLI Drops Manual As VW Loses Its Last U.S. Stick Shift
Goodbye Third PedalAfter Volkswagen dropped the manual transmission option from the Golf GTI and Golf R in North America, it seemed only a matter of time before the stick shift disappeared from the Jetta GLI as well. That day has now reportedly arrived, as TFLCar said a VW spokesperson confirmed the Jetta GLI will be offered exclusively with a DSG dual-clutch transmission starting with the 2027 model year. With the broader decline of manual transmissions, it does not come as a surprise that declining demand is behind the discontinuation. Even BMW M boss Frank van Meel has said a three-pedal setup no longer makes much sense. Automakers mostly keep manuals around in mass-market nameplates to satisfy enthusiasts, but automatic gearboxes are ultimately where the money is. Volkswagen The Business Case Wins AgainThe VW spokesperson summed that reality up well, telling the publication, “As drivers and car enthusiasts, we appreciate manuals too! That’s why our region worked very hard to keep them around. We know it matters to a small but passionate group of drivers who love being fully engaged and rowing their own gears. Even so, global demand continued to narrow to a point where the market can no longer sustain it. As much as it hurts, that reality meant making some tough choices.” Starting with the 2027 model year, the Volkswagen Jetta GLI will reportedly be sold exclusively with a 7-speed DSG, which generally provides faster gear changes than traditional torque-converter automatics. It will continue to be paired with a 2.0-liter EA888 turbocharged inline-four engine producing 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Buyers looking for a compact sedan with a stick shift can turn to the Honda Civic Si, which comes standard with a 6-speed manual. For a bit more money, the Subaru WRX and Hyundai Elantra N could also fit the bill. Volkswagen VW’s American Strategy Keeps EvolvingWhile the manual is being axed from Volkswagen’s U.S. lineup, the transmission is still available in certain European models, including the Golf and T-Cross. Another product line missing from the U.S. is VW’s new lineup of small, affordable EVs, including the ID. Polo, which starts at 24,995 euros, or around $29,000 at current exchange rates. Volkswagen’s long-term U.S. plan is less clear amid market challenges, including tariffs. In that context, the Jetta GLI losing its manual highlights the automaker’s shift away from low-volume enthusiast offerings toward profit-driven decisions meant to keep the brand competitive in the region. As such, an entry into the lucrative pickup truck segment is also being considered, though the idea remains in the early stages of evaluation for now. Ferrari Purosangue Owners Could Face A $14,000 Bill For One Shock
The Ferrari Not-SUV Trick That Makes It Drive Like A FerrariAt first glance, the Ferrari Purosangue seems like the brand’s entry into the luxury SUV crowd. But underneath, it uses one of the most advanced suspension systems you’ll find on any road car. Rather than sticking with traditional anti-roll bars, Ferrari worked with Multimatic – the Canadian firm behind the Ford GT – to develop an active suspension setup that manages body movement in a completely different way. Each shock absorber is more than just a cushion for bumps. Every damper gets its own 48-volt stepper motor that actively controls pitch and roll, adjusting how the body reacts when you brake, accelerate, or corner. Compression and rebound are managed by spool valves, and the hydraulic fluid moves through all four dampers, even running through its own cooling system, with a radiator, fan, and reservoir. The end result is an SUV that corners flatter and feels more planted than you’d expect from something this size. Still, it’s worth remembering that these shocks aren’t the kind of parts you’d want to treat as routine wear items, especially once the three-year warranty runs out. After that, any replacements are on the owner. One Shock, Five FiguresThe cost discussion recently gained traction thanks to a Reddit thread where a mechanic familiar with the Purosangue suspension described just how elaborate the system really is. That same thread highlighted the replacement cost for a Purosangue shock, which we checked through Eurospares. At the time, a single shock was just over $14,000, though prices seem to fluctuate. Replacing all four could easily push the total into six figures, and that’s before you even factor in labor. To be fair, Ferrari doesn’t nickel-and-dime owners on regular servicing. Most new models, aside from the ultra-limited ones, come with a seven-year maintenance plan that covers scheduled service, parts, and labor. But maintenance and warranty aren’t the same, and if something complicated like the suspension fails after coverage ends, the cost is yours. Eurospares Expensive Parts Are A Luxury-Car RealityFerrari isn’t the only brand with expensive repair bills. Most luxury and high-performance cars have major parts that can quietly drive up ownership costs and hurt resale value. Engines, transmissions, adaptive suspensions, battery packs, and electronics all have a way of turning into big-ticket surprises once the warranty is gone. The Purosangue’s suspension is just Ferrari’s take on that reality: technically impressive, maybe even overengineered, and definitely something you hope never shows up on your bill. Ferrari deserves credit for making the suspension genuinely interesting instead of just using a standard luxury SUV setup. The Purosangue feels like it was engineered with driving in mind. Still, if a single shock costs more than a decent used car, it’s probably best to leave the rally jumps to something else. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. leads only Coca-Cola 600 practice
For the first time this weekend, cars made their way onto the track for a live session on Saturday afternoon. It was a somber atmosphere as drivers climbed into their cars, including Austin Hill -- wearing a Kyle Busch t-shirt under his firesuit as he takes over the fallen legend's renumbered No. 33 car for the Coca-Cola 600. Nissan Oil Changes Could Get Harder As Dealers Ration Motor Oil
The Rationing Has Begun Surviving the fuel crisis might get a bit harder. Now it appears that we have a real motor oil crisis here. Earlier this month, Toyota released a bulletin to its dealers, telling them to ration and substitute certain grades for their cars, Automotive News reports. The shortages continued into Nissan's camp. We caught wind of its announcement before the brand even sent it. Now, about a week later, the rationing has begun, and there are now guidelines on who gets priority. Getty Images Motor Oil Shortage Nissan is rationing 5W-30 and 0W-20 Nissan Genuine Motor Oils. Starting this week, Nissan's stock of these oils has dropped by 30% year-on-year. With only 70% left in the tank, the brand is already taking precautions, sending memos to dealers to manage its stock during the shortage. The brand will prioritize certain owners, such as those claiming "warranty, extended warranty, recall repairs, goodwill, and prepaid maintenance," according to Kim Less, the vice president of aftersales at Nissan Americas, in the bulletin addressed to Nissan dealers. “Given these constraints, it is critical to prioritize the use of Nissan Genuine 0W-20 (and 5W-30, where applicable) for warranty, extended warranty, recall repairs, goodwill, and prepaid maintenance,” Kim Less, vice president of aftersales, Nissan Americas, said in the May 15 bulletin to Nissan dealers. Akio Kon/Bloomberg via Getty Images Alternatives Less also stated in the bulletin that the brand will try to secure alternative sources of motor oil for its customers, and that they "have options." It's not yet known whether Nissan will field substitutes, as Toyota stated in its announcements. On top of that, there are industry-wide shortages. Other sources have reported that retailers like Autozone have also reported shortages from Exxon Mobil, leaving a lot of shelf space unfilled. Meanwhile, dealer groups are sitting on a good supply of oil, while oil change centers like Valvoline's quick-service chain have stated that the U.S. and Canadian markets will have enough for "today and for the foreseeable future." The Forseeable Future For now, the brands' top brass is taking the most action in light of this shortage. Simple economics also dictates that if a product is in short supply, prices are sure to rise, and some brands are already feeling the pinch. "We're all grabbing it, and we're all paying stupid prices for it, but if you want it, that's what it is," said Gacita of Petra Automotive Products. Unfortunately, consumers will be paying higher prices for their oil changes, if not now, then maybe the next one will cost you a lot more. Back then, it was fuel; now it's oil and maintenance. Parts are also getting more expensive, so consumers will be paying more across the board. View the full article

GM Is Racing In IndyCar, F1 And NASCAR On The Same Huge Weekend
A Weekend To Remember The weekend before Memorial Day is packed full of racing events. Some manufacturers are squarely focused on one, while others might have two to worry about; however, GM appears to be in three, and is really proud of it. GM announced in one of its press releases how it's heading to three major racing events: The Indianapolis 500, the Formula 1 Lenovo Canadian Grand Prix, and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600. All events will be running in succession by multiple teams fielded or supplied by General Motors themselves. General Motors Indy 500, F1, and NASCAR The field of Indianapolis is more GM than any other brand. More than half of the grid is powered by Chevrolet engines. A total of 33 cars will be on the grid this Sunday, and with more than half sporting Chevy engines, GM has a good chance of getting one, two, or even three of its engines on top of the podium this weekend. Meanwhile, in Canada, the Cadillac Formula 1 Team will be participating at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal. This will be the first time that the Cadillac F1 team will line up at the Canadian Grand Prix. Last but not least, the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 will be held in Charlotte. Again, GM-supplied teams will be aiming for the top spots this weekend with their Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 stock cars. General Motors Not the First Time A triple-threat weekend isn't new to GM. Since 2012, around this time of year, GM has participated in these events every year, with achievements to boot. "The scale and the breadth of our footprint will really be on display this weekend,” says Eric Warren, Vice President of Global Motorsport Competition at GM. “It demonstrates our deep racing heritage. This isn’t just a side activity: we’re competing to win at the top levels of motorsports all at the same time. I really believe that’s what makes GM unique.” Eric Warren's job is to see opportunities and to ensure that GM ends up at the top of the heap after all is said and done. Decision-making and team forming are all in his job description, among a multitude of other tasks. This weekend will be one of many that the brand has done over the years. More than just supplying engines, GM also works together with racing engineers to deliver top-tier performance in its racecars. Learnings are taken, and eventually trickle down to the end consumer, just like any other motorsports program. So, now that you know GM's in all these events, which one are you watching? #12: David Malukas, Team Penske Chevrolet, #20: Alexander Rossi, Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet General Motors View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

Ferrari Dominates Mecum Indy As Top 10 Classics Sell For $74 Million
Can't Beat The ClassicsWhen it comes to investments, it seems that those who've bought, kept, and maintained automotive classics have outdone everyone. In the past few years, the classic car market has boomed and continues to do so, as new cars and models are inducted into the classic car market, driving up their values. Mecum Auctions recently held a high-profile affair at Indy 2026, where a number of very notable and rare automotive icons were up for sale. Most cars breached the $1 million mark, but the top ten were in a class of their own. Mecum View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article $74 Million Top TenAs we enumerate the top ten, you'll notice a distinctly Italian theme; most of the top-notchers came in the form of Italian exotics. Starting things off is a 1971 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spyder, one of only 122 made, and it even appeared in a movie called A Star Is Born. It sold for $2.53 million. Up next is an American icon: a 1965 Shelby GT350R, one of only 34 race-spec models, fetching $2.75 million. Taking us back to the Italians is a bright yellow 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, the replacement for the 250. This 275 is one of 330 and sold for $2.86 million. The first car on the list to breach the $3 million mark is the 1972 Lamborghini Miura P400 SV, which we covered a while back as a one-off. This Miura is the only example finished in Bleu Tahiti with gold accents over white leather upholstery; it sold for $4.67 million. At this point, prices are jumping drastically; the next car on the list is a 1991 Ferrari F40 in pristine condition, which sold for $5.17 million. Now at the halfway mark, the 5th car is a modern classic, a Ferrari La Ferrari, going for $8.58 million. Eclipsing the La Ferrari at number 4 is a 2005 Maserati MC12, the spin-off model based on the Enzo. It is now the most expensive MC12 ever sold, at $9.5 million, beating the previous record of $5.2 million set in 2025. Third on the list is a 1995 Ferrari F50, which surprisingly sold for more than the more sought-after F40; it went for $9.79 million. The penultimate car is a rare silver (one of six) Ferrari Enzo that hits the $10.23 million mark. Mecum View the 5 images of this gallery on the original article The Most Expensive LotTopping the sales for the 2026 Mecum Indy auctions is unsurprisingly a Ferrari, but not just any, a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California. Historically, any 250 Ferrari model usually sells for top dollar, and some can reach $30 million. This short-wheelbase convertible is just one of fifty-five and was sold for an eye-watering $18.15 million. Mecum View the full article

Dodge Charger Designer Reveals Why The New Coupe Is Bigger Than A Minivan
Speaking With Scott KruggerAutoblog recently spoke with Scott Krugger, the head of North America design at Stellantis. Prior to this role, Krugger managed exterior design for the Dodge brand and SRT performance vehicles, meaning he was responsible for styling the current 2026 Dodge Charger. Jared Rosenholtz/Autoblog The new Charger, particularly the electric Daytona version, has been steeped in controversy as early price cuts inevitably led to huge depreciation in a short period. Now though, Dodge has brought out gas-powered versions with the company's Hurricane inline-six engine, which should better resonate with customers. Krugger's design also seems to be winning over casual observers based on what we can tell from online comments and in-person reactions to the car. "We wanted to have an iconic proportion that was clearly a Dodge and had that Charger feel," Krugger said in our interview. Why Make It So Big? Jared Rosenholtz/Autoblog View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Automakers don't typically build "big" two-door coupes anymore, but the new Charger breaks the mold. It's 206.6 inches long in both coupe and sedan form, meaning it's over two inches longer than a Chrysler Pacifica minivan. Only the Rolls-Royce Spectre (214.7 in) is longer among current two-door cars. "We wanted to consolidate down the number of parts, pieces, and complexity," Krugger said when asked why the Charger coupe and sedan share the same length and wheelbase. "It's a muscle car not a pony car. We lean into it." Aside from a very minor improvement to cargo space in the sedan, the two Charger body styles are virtually identical in dimensions. Buyers can pay $2,000 more for the sedan if they want the practicality of two additional doors. "It's an easy sell from a functionality standpoint as a family vehicle. But you don't have to sacrifice anything on cargo and passenger space [with the two-door]," he said. Why A Hatchback? Jared Rosenholtz/Autoblog View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article The outgoing Charger and even the Challenger were hot sellers because they offered affordable performance combined with usable practicality. This new Charger takes it a step further with a hatchback trunk that's even more spacious than the previous model, accommodating up to 38 cubic feet of space with the seats folded. We figured the decision to offer a hatchback was driven by SUV popularity, but it was actually a result of aerodynamics. Krugger explained how his team wanted the new Charger to harken back to the 1968 Charger, but bring the design into the future. "With the proportion of the vehicle, the side profile suited well to a backlight angle that was perfect for the magic aero angle (around 71 degrees)," he explained. "If we could get a hatch on this thing, we could have an amazing cargo area, which would align to what Dodge has always been: have your cake and eat it too. This is a functional, family-oriented vehicle that doesn't compromise." Will You Bring Back The Widebody? Jared Rosenholtz/Autoblog View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Aerodynamics explains why the Charger gained its practical new trunk, but it also helped eliminate a much-loved feature from the outgoing Charger and Challenger models: the widebody kit. "The Charger and Challenger lived a long life," Krugger joked. "We laugh because the first SRT tire was a 245 and it was wide back then. We eventually went to tires as wide as 305. So the wide flare add-on was actually an afterthought, so to speak, because it was done [late] in the lifecycle. We never had the visual path that we would make the cars that wide. To get that tire [to fit], we had to add the flares." While the new Charger may not have flares that bulge out from the body, it's actually wider than the old widebody cars, measuring 79.8 inches (not including mirrors). The old Charger and Challenger were only 78.3 inches wide. Krugger even teased that the new car is only 0.2 inches way from legally needing marker lights, like a bus or a Ford F-150 Raptor. "We wanted to have up to a 325 on the back, so we need a widebody for all to accommodate the tire," he explained. "The widebody for all mentality suits where we want to be in proportion. Dodge's design language is all about presence. Something that you see and you know from a mile away. We wanted a sleeker design visually with pure proportion on the side." Krugger says the widebody cars have become like "folklore" but there was a time before their release when he didn't know how customers would respond. "I remember when we put the flares on. 'Can we make this look right?' They look so aggressive and nasty on the road and it has its own presence and character," he said. More Exciting Stuff Coming? Jared Rosenholtz/Autoblog View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Though this new Charger likely won't receive wide fender flares, unless Dodge decides it needs even wider tires, Krugger hinted that we haven't seen all of his team's ideas for this car yet. The Charger is still early in its life cycle, and we'd be shocked if a V8 model wasn't in the cards. "We think of the life of this vehicle in the future. We have tons of ideas of what we want to do with it," he teased. "There are parts and pieces that we're going to think of in the future that could be as aggressive and done in a different way that gives it that edgy presence. But we wanted the car to look more modern on the road." "From the standpoint of where we go into the future with color, with La Shirl Turner, who is on my team as head of the Advanced Color & Materials Group, she has tons of ideas," Krugger added. "When you think of colors like Green Machine or others from the past, a design like this can wear colors you would not expect from the '70s and '80s that would be difficult to place on a modern car. There's a lot of colors to come that we're working through that will be pretty unique and different that you would not expect to see." View the full article

Kia’s Cheapest Car Could Be Killed By Tougher Emissions Rules
The Little Kia Facing a Big DeadlineA report from Auto Express states that Kia’s smallest model is headed for discontinuation as emissions regulations continue to tighten. However, the model in question is not the K4 or Seltos, but rather the Picanto, which is sold in markets such as the U.K., where it has been among the brand’s best-sellers. The Picanto is a tiny hatchback well suited to narrow European roads. Given the U.S. market’s preference for larger vehicles, the model was never officially sold in the U.S. Still, it has given buyers in other markets an affordable entry point into the brand, but with Kia reportedly no longer planning a next-generation model, its days appear to be numbered. Kia Signs of the TimesThat is because the U.K.’s current Zero Emission Vehicle mandate requires new combustion-powered cars sold after 2030 to use some form of hybrid assistance. Ted Lee, executive vice president and head of Kia’s Global Operations Division, told the publication that the Picanto’s tight packaging makes shoehorning in electric motors and other hybrid components a major challenge. As such, the nameplate could exit the lineup by the end of 2029. The Picanto first arrived in the U.K. in 2004 and has since accumulated more than 260,000 sales there, along with around three million globally. Its peers are now turning to hybridization, while some, such as the Volkswagen ID. Polo is going fully electric. These shifts reflect the changes automakers may need to make to comply with new policies, though it could also be said that the tiny hatch has had a fulfilling run. Kia Kia’s Next Big BetInstead of allocating resources to a next-gen Picanto, Kia is targeting around 14 EV models by 2030. In the U.S., the automaker is also looking to enter the lucrative pickup truck market with a midsize entry, competing in a segment led by models such as the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger. The truck is also expected to be electrified, potentially with hybrid and extended-range EV variants. However, despite electrification being the name of the game, some models are still struggling to gain traction. The plug-in hybrid version of the Kia Niro did not return for the 2026 model year in the U.S., while the performance-oriented EV6 GT remains absent from the lineup. Both models have also been affected by changing market conditions, including U.S. tariffs that have made imported electrified models more difficult to justify. Mazda Says Gen Zs Are Buying $50K Cars Instead of Houses
Shifting Priorities in an Unaffordable EraThe bitter reality of today's auto market is that the average new car price has breached a staggering $50,000. Coupled with high interest rates, Edmunds data show that a historic 20% of buyers are now locked into monthly payments of over $1,000. Faced with an unforgiving economic landscape, Gen Zs are radically redefining traditional milestones. Instead of saving for an unattainable house, America’s youngest buyers are pouring their capital into the driver's seat. A new study by Mazda North American Operations confirms this massive cultural pivot: Gen Zs now prioritize vehicle ownership over buying a home. Nearly two-thirds (69%) of respondents said they would choose to purchase a car over real estate, making them 13% more likely to select a vehicle. As the American dream of homeownership slips out of reach, a new car has officially become the defining asset of early adult independence. Getty Images The New Definition of Automotive ValueThis shift comes as vehicles get pricier by the day, driven upward by the high costs of new EV technology and premium features. To swallow these ballooning MSRPs, buyers are increasingly taking on longer, riskier loans stretching up to 84 months. Yet despite soaring costs, Gen Zs aren't looking for stripped-down economy cars. Instead, they demand that their vehicles serve as high-tech sanctuaries, redirecting their expectations entirely toward the in-cabin experience. According to the Mazda report, young buyers define vehicle quality through tech and safety. An overwhelming 94% rank advanced safety features as critical, while 93% demand intuitive technology. Audio is also a massive dealbreaker: 85% agree that a high-quality sound system signals overall vehicle quality. For Gen Zs, value isn't measured by what's under the hood, but by how seamlessly the cabin integrates into their digital lives. Mazda The LowdownThis study says as much about the economy as it does about Gen Zs. Younger buyers are not abandoning the dream of homeownership because they suddenly value cars more than houses. Gen Zs choosing a $50,000 car over a $400,000 house feels more like a practical surrender. When the housing market feels completely locked out, a premium vehicle becomes the ultimate consolation prize. If you can't afford a zip code, you might as well buy a high-tech, mobile sanctuary that you actually enjoy spending time in. Automakers need to wake up to this new reality. To capture younger buyers, brands might want to steer clear of horsepower and start selling digital immersion and peace of mind. Gen Zs are essentially treating their cars as micro-apartments on wheels. As long as macroeconomic hurdles keep real estate out of reach, expect young drivers to keep demanding top-tier tech and premium comfort in the driveway. Volvo’s Last U.S. Wagon Just Died, But Its CEO Is Already Hinting At A Comeback
Late last year, we learned that the Volvo V60 Cross Country station wagon would end production in April 2026, and while the company has given hints that it is still looking into the space for the future, there haven't been any official comments that could be considered promises of the longroof's return. Until now - Volvo Cars president and CEO Håkan Samuelsson told Road & Track that Volvo is "looking into that," adding, "Not just looking into. I think it's not really too much [to say] that ... I think we will not only have SUVs five years from now." While he understands that the U.S. has become obsessed with SUVs, he also pointed out that practical and emotional factors may play into the drive for wagons or sedans again. Wagons Are Better EVs, and They Might Be More Hip, Too Cole Attisha The CEO noted that air resistance will play a role in decision-making, something that Ford CEO Jim Farley has repeatedly noted, too, saying that "the sedan silhouette turns out to be very clean aerodynamically." The other big factor is one of individuality. Many Americans grew up in the back of station wagons, and having crossovers and SUVs when they came of age felt like a meaningful change that differentiated them from their parents. As SUVs and crossovers proliferate, younger generations may want something that feels different from what today's parents drive, and that could shift the perception of what is desirable and modern "back to lower cars," according to Samuelsson. "They say, 'My mother used to have [that car] when they see an SUV." In a nutshell, EV range benefits and the pleasure of driving something different in shape from the previous generation may make station wagons very compelling by the end of the decade. But Volvo can't rely only on that, and it's got plans for a big SUV that could be very popular in the U.S. Volvo Is Working On Something Big Volvo Samuelsson's discussion also revealed that Volvo is working on something that R&T says points to a previously rumored Cadillac Escalade rival, something to take on the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS with. The CEO said, "We are, right now, developing a car where it's really the U.S. market in sight, which should be a really big seller here." He added that it's "a family-oriented bigger car," adding that it needs variety in its powertrain offering, with an EV-only offering "difficult" to find success with. Better still, this new SUV may be produced at Volvo's South Carolina plant, which is currently underutilized and has been offered to other brands. "With such a car," Samuelsson said, "with the volume we [could] sell in the U.S., it should be no problem to fill the factory. If Volvo can introduce a big SUV specifically for America while also bringing wagons back, it should be able to appeal to more buyers, something it desperately needs to do. Unfortunately, a specific timeframe for any new Volvos is out of the question for now, but we'll report back as soon as more information becomes available. View the full article

Gas Prices Are So Bad More Americans Are Taking Public Transportation Again
The Return Of The Commute HackWith gas prices still high amid the conflict in the Middle East, more people are turning to hybrid vehicles, which help improve fuel economy by adding at least one electric motor for propulsion. But a CBS News report shows that high gas prices are not only pushing people into more efficient cars, but also toward public transportation. The report stated that Amtrak saw a 5% increase in passengers in March compared to a year earlier. Meanwhile, bus company Trailways saw a 9% increase in April over the same period, with some passengers opting to take the bus for long-distance travel instead, as airfares have reportedly risen by 15% due to increasing jet fuel prices. Gas Prices Could Redefine DemandIt has only been a few months since gas prices surged, but the shifts happening in the transportation sector could still bring major long-term changes to the car industry, including reduced demand for new vehicles, particularly larger, less fuel-efficient models like pickup trucks. The growing preference for efficiency was also reflected in Honda’s sales last month, when the automaker’s hybrid lineup – including hybrid versions of the CR-V, Civic, and Accord – reached an all-time April high. There is also reportedly growing interest in electric vehicles, though that may not fully translate into sales because of slowing EV demand, particularly in the U.S. While some are turning to public transportation to combat high gas prices, others are starting to carpool. Not only does that help car owners save money on fuel, but it can also reduce emissions by putting fewer cars on the road while still moving more people. Artūras Kokorevas/Pexels Public Transportation Has MomentumBut despite growing demand for public transportation – with Trailways saying it is looking to hire more drivers and buy more buses – the report stated that the company has not raised fares yet. However, conditions could change if more drivers start facing the anticipated $5-per-gallon mark around Memorial Day. Gas prices can vary by state, which helps explain why California – with its steep gas taxes – tends to have higher prices. As a result, some drivers there are crossing into Arizona to gas up and save as much as $3 per gallon. But hey, respect the effort when every gallon counts. Bruno Coelho View the full article

Honda Prelude Fans Want A Type R, But The Business Case Is Brutal
Let's be honest: the Honda Prelude's sporty coupe styling writes checks its 2.0-liter hybrid powertrain and continuously variable transmission can't cash, and with it sharing much in common with the Civic, questions about a hotter, Type R-inspired variant are always being asked. Honda Australia president and CEO Jay Joseph has now explained why those questions are always doused with cold water, as reported by regional publication CarSales. The executive has plainly explained that a manual or turbocharged Prelude simply won't happen, not because it's impossible, but because it's impractical from a cost perspective. Hi-Po Honda Prelude Would Cost Hundreds of Millions of Dollars Honda Racing Corporation Speaking to Australian media, Joseph recited the usual PR-sculpted answers that Honda has previously given, saying that the Prelude was designed to appeal to a different global audience than the Civic Type R and saying that the hybrid powertrain made sense for the Prelude as a "lifestyle vehicle." But he later went into more detail about the financial and technical limitations of the Prelude's performance, noting that while the platform is adaptable to several different powertrains, sharing fundamental elements with the Civic Hybrid, Civic Si, and Type R, the Prelude has been so particularly adapted to its current form that altering it to be a hotter coupe would be nearly as much work as redesigning the Prelude from scratch. Related: Honda’s New Prelude Is Already Getting Another Special Edition After Strong Demand "There's some level of interchangeability that's inherent to a platform approach," said Joseph, "but at the same time, we've made so many adaptations of the platform for this specific vehicle. It's just such a different philosophical approach ... adapting this body to all the things that would be required of the Type R is more or less a full development." This would cost Honda "in the order of hundreds of millions of dollars," he said. Given Honda's current financial state, there's no way it would pour that much money down the drain. Basically, if you want Type R performance, you have to buy a Civic, with the Prelude intentionally designed for a less hardcore audience. Honda's Type R badge is legendary, so it can't be watered down, but what about something else? A More Focused Honda Prelude May Still Happen Kristen Brown/Autoblog While more power appears to be off the cards for the Prelude, Honda Racing Corporation is developing various HRC performance upgrades that aim to "enhance the driving experience," meaning lower, stiffer suspension, sharper brakes, stickier tires, and other handling and aero improvements. HRC also suggested widened front and rear tracks, new mirror caps, and a slightly wider body kit to enhance aggression at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Show in January, and the HRC Prelude Concept had loads of forged carbon fiber. It's unclear exactly what will be offered, but Honda is serious about bringing at least some of these upgrades to the dealership. In fact, Honda says its HRC upgrades for the Civic Type R should reach dealerships, including America, by the end of the year, and it makes sense for similar enhancements to be offered for the Prelude before long. So while a new, more potent variant of the Prelude may not be coming, Honda will enhance style and handling through factory-approved aftermarket upgrades. View the full article

Volkswagen Still Builds The Passat Sedan America Can’t Have
The Dwindling Midsize Sedan MarketFor anyone who grew up in the '90s and '00s, the sedan was practically the default family car. In the U.S, midsize sedans once ruled the roost with Camrys, Accords, and Altimas practically flying off showroom floors. Fast forward to today, and a good number of automakers have abandoned that segment in America. Mitsubishi had dropped out of that race, and so have Subaru, General Motors, and Ford. Toyota, Honda, and Nissan are still at it, but sales aren't like they were anymore, with the Altima barely hanging in there. Mazda, on the other hand, is being more selective in the markets it sells its midsize sedan. Hyundai and Kia midsize sedans are doing okay, but again, the volumes aren't the same as before. The sole European offering, the Volkswagen Passat, is no longer offered stateside. That said, there are still markets where these cars thrive. China is the biggest market for these, and its homegrown brands have no shortage of offerings. South Korea is another one worth mentioning, as well as the Middle East. The latter brings us back neatly to the Volkswagen Passat. Volkswagen The Passat NowMany countries no longer get the Passat, which is a bit of a shame given that it was such a good car - the international versions, at least. The ninth-generation Passat (B9) was introduced in 2023 and sold exclusively as a wagon in Europe. That's unsurprising given that an overwhelming majority of the previous generations left dealer lots in wagon guise in that market. But go over to China, and the B9 Passat loses its long roof and sprouts a trunk. Its either called the Passat Pro or the Magotan, the latter sporting a different look from the European Passat and Passat Pro. Interestingly, you can get the Magotan as the Passat over in the Middle East. That means the Middle East is the only market that gets that specific version of the midsize sedan. The Passat for that region was introduced late last year for the 2026 model year. While it's essentially a Magotan, there are key differences in the infotainment system for markets outside China. Despite its appearance and some similarities to the last NMS Passat sold in America, this one rides on a completely new platform shared with the Euro Passat. Volkswagen The Middle Eastern PassatOver there, the Passat is marketed as a more upmarket car. That explains the spacious rear accommodations and rear headrest pillows on higher-trim models. Speaking of which, there are three available: Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline. According to Drive Arabia, prices range from 118,500 to 145,000 Saudi Arabian Riyal. That's roughly $31,600 to $38,700, not bad given current prices for the Accord and Camry. So, what comes standard? There's remote engine start, a 12.9-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital cockpit, power-adjustable seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, and IQ.Drive Select modes. Comfortline models add a panoramic sunroof, illuminated front and rear logos, ambient lighting, wireless charging, power-reclining rear seats, advanced driver assists, and more. As for the Highline, it rides on larger 19-inch alloys and comes with goodies such as ventilated front and rear seats, a massage function, tri-zone climate control, and those headrest pillows at the back. Both Trendline and Comfortline models are powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 158 hp. Exclusive to the Highline is a 2.0-liter turbo from the GTI, but detuned to 217 hp. There is no six-cylinder or hybrid version of the Passat for the Middle East. Volkswagen Does America Need It?Given America's insatiable appetite for crossovers, SUVs, and trucks, the chances of the Passat, whether in sedan or wagon body styles, are slim to none. Also, tariffs effectively seal the car's fate, as the wagon is built in Slovakia, whereas all sedans are built in China. If you want a VW sedan in America, your only choice is the Jetta. If you want a wagon, you're out of luck. Yes, there will be people who would want the all-new B9 Passat in the country. However, given the state of the midsize market right now, it's safe to say that VW North America won't be able to sell enough to make a profit. If it's any consolation, though, the Passat is still selling well enough in the markets where it's offered, so the name will live on for a couple more years. Stellantis Plans 7 Cheaper Models To Fight America’s $50,000 Car Problem
Stellantis' Bold New Car RolloutStellantis is showing signs of positive growth following losses of about $25.9 billion in 2025. At the time of writing, the automotive conglomerate posted a 6% increase in its net revenue year-on-year to $42.2 billion, while net profit improved to $464.5 million. The company still has a long way to go, but its outlook looks promising. Now, Stellantis has announced its FaSTLAne 2030 turnaround plans. It will spend close to $70 billion in overhauling its management, production, and, of course, product portfolio. By the end of 2030, the company wants to have done 60 new vehicle launches and 50 significant refreshes. No pressure, then. Stellantis Plans for North AmericaAs average car prices breach the $50,000 mark, Stellantis wants to roll out more cars priced below that. Seven models will carry a price tag below $40,000, and two more will start at less than $30,000. Two more pricier models will be launched, bringing the total to 11 new models by 2030. It wasn't mentioned what the sub-$40,000 and $30,000 models will be at the moment. However, it's Jeep and Ram that will get the lion's share of development and focus as Stellantis pinpointed both as its biggest volume and profit drivers. With that in mind, we could see more attainable pickups and crossovers from those brands. That said, it has been reported that Chrysler will introduce a new model under $30,000. It's said that it was already shown to dealers in concept form and was called Pronto. Not many details were revealed about it, but we're hedging our bets that it's a subcompact crossover based on a European Stellantis product. The Bigger PictureOf the estimated $70 billion for the overhaul, Stellantis will allocate about $42 billion for brands and products. The upcoming 11 new Stellantis models for North America will bear a good chunk of those costs, up to 60%, per the company's figures. It's a massive investment, but Stellantis hopes to raise revenue growth by 25% and volume gains by 35%. To bring these new models to market more quickly, the company is targeting 24-month vehicle development cycles instead of the usual 40 months. In the company's own words, it will be rolling out '29 battery-electric vehicles, 15 plug-in hybrid or range-extended electric vehicles, 24 hybrid electric vehicles, and 39 ICE/mild hybrid electric vehicles.' With that, over 100 redesigned and refreshed models worldwide are expected within the next four years. As mentioned, Jeep and Ram will receive the most investment in the North American market. For Europe, Stellantis will be pouring more into Fiat and Peugeot, while the rest of the brands will benefit from the platforms used by those marques. Stellantis even wants to 'strengthen the future of Maserati,' which is probably its tallest order. Stellantis View the full article

Jeep’s Next Global SUV Is Being Born Far From Detroit
In a country better known now for its booming domestic car market than for exporting global automotive icons, a new Jeep is taking shape. It's a proper, ground-up SUV destined for 50 countries, across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, South America, and beyond. And the country doing the engineering and the building is India, according to ET Auto. The partnership that makes it possible has been in place for over two decades. Stellantis and Tata Motors, through their 50:50 joint venture at the Ranjangaon facility near Pune, India, have produced more than 1.37 million vehicles together. Now they're ready for something far more ambitious. Stellantis Jeep's Comeback StrategyStellantis hasn't exactly been subtle about how bad things got. The company posted negative profit margins last year and has spent much of 2025 rebuilding under new CEO Antonio Filosa. His answer is FaSTLAne 2030, a $70 billion turnaround plan that commits to over 60 new vehicles and 50 refreshes by the decade's end. Jeep sits at the very centre of it. The brand is being repositioned as one of four true global pillars, alongside Ram, Fiat, and Peugeot, with new models spanning everything from a revived Cherokee to a Wrangler Scrambler pickup. The idea is to flood showrooms with cars and claw back market share that drifted badly in recent years. Stellantis View the 1 images of this gallery on the original article Why India, and What Comes NextThe new India-developed SUV is one of five globally oriented vehicles Stellantis is building across Asia through local partnerships. The logic is straightforward. Engineering and manufacturing costs in India run significantly cheaper than in Europe or North America, and Tata brings a formidable platform, supplier network, and manufacturing infrastructure. The platform in question is expected to be ARGOS, the same modular architecture underpinning the Tata Sierra, capable of supporting petrol, hybrid, EV, and AWD configurations. Localisation levels are targeted to climb from around 65 percent today toward 90 percent, sharpening the cost advantage further. The SUV is expected to arrive by 2028, and for Jeep, India isn't just a market anymore. It's a launchpad. View the full article

Building The Rearend and Custom Race Steering Wheel For The Martin Lundqvist Racing Street Week Sweden Drag and Drive 1969 Camaro Project!
Project 508 is in full swing and we are super excited about what is going on with this machine. We’ve got another couple videos to share below and will be bringing you more in the coming weeks as well. This drag and drive Camaro project sure has go some seriously sick fabrication going on and I can’t wait to see it all in person during Street Week 2026. In this installment we’ve got video showing the new rearend is going together, plus a one off custom racing steering wheel build, and finally a bit more of the floor work to finish her up. I love new drag and drive builds, and because I’m going to Sweden this year for Street Week I am really excited that this new drag and drive build is being built at Auto Cut in Stockholm by Martin Lundqvist Racing Fabrication. This is going to be something special. Because they are in Sweden, they aren’t talking much in these videos and what they are say you probably won’t understand. We would crank up the Closed Captioning for the subtitles, but that wasn’t an option. We know this was a drag car in it’s former life, and it’s going to be ultra cool when it’s done. While they aren’t scrapping the entire car to start new, they are replacing a whole hell of a lot of this car. We can’t wait to see it coming together, because they are doing some really cool stuff with the Auto Cut cnc machines and water jets. This is some special stuff. Check it out.
