  5. Big Sky Race Week coverage continues thanks to Bill and the crew at BANGshift Billy. This time it is their Day 3 video from Helena Motorsports Complex in Montana. Can Bill hang on to 1st place on Day 3. And remember, the heat is still a big problem for all these racers and especially with these smaller race tracks. There has been a lot of weird weather in the last 12 months and it doesn’t seem to be getting any less crazy. With heat waves and storm fronts moving all over the country, you are seeing areas that almost never reach triple digits get well over 110 degrees. And why not? We’ve had tornadoes where they’ve never been before, freezes that make no sense in certain areas of the country, and weather that changes so dramatically in just a couple of days that people really can’t keep up. So how does that affect a drag and drive like Big Sky Race Week? We’ll find out, because our buddy Bill with the BangShift Billy is sharing video from the event for the next several days. The best part? He’s battling it out with Rich Guido, the Canadian Chuck Norris, for the Stick Shift Class win. We can’t wait. Big thank you to Bill for sharing. 11. Replacing tyres often feels like the obvious fix when a vehicle starts to feel unstable, noisy, or less efficient on the road. However, many drivers overlook a more fundamental issue that can quietly wear down even brand-new tyres within weeks: wheel alignment. When alignment is off, the tyres do not meet the road surface at the correct angle, which affects handling, fuel efficiency, and overall safety. Before spending money on new tyres, it is worth understanding whether the underlying issue […] The post Before You Replace Your Tires, Check Your Wheel Alignment appeared first on Return of the Cafe Racers. 13. Two-time Funny Car world champion Cruz Pedregon has spent more than three decades competing in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series and will look for his first Sonoma Raceway victory in nearly 30 years at this weekend’s 38th annual DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals presented by PowerEdge. Pedregon, a Southern California native, pilots the 12,000-horsepower Snap-on Tools Dodge Hellcat SRT and the Funny Car veteran has many memories from the Northern California facility, including his two wins in 1996 and 1998. “Sonoma is a home race for us, even though we’re from SoCal, we get great fan support up there and we’re definitely up for a win in front of the home crowd,” Pedregon said. “Like they say in real estate: location, location, location. I feel like Sonoma and all of Northern California has a great racing history going way back of not only racers but a lot of great race fans throughout that area. I’m in the twilight of my career, so it would mean a lot to punch it in again for a win.” The DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals presented by PowerEdge will feature a full weekend of action at the 11th of 20 events in 2026, as well as NHRA 75th anniversary items like: An appearance from legendary NHRA Top Fuel and Funny Car world champion Gary Scelzi. Scelzi is one of only three drivers in NHRA history to claim world titles in both Top Fuel (1997, 1998, 2000) and Funny Car (2005). NHRA will honor Scelzi’s accomplishments at his home track in Sonoma. Brittany Force appears on the special commemorative ticket for the event following her incredible 343.16-mph run from a season ago. A new-look Nitro Mall, special displays and more. The 2025 DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals presented by PowerEdge featured wins by Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Austin Prock (Funny Car) and Greg Stanfield (Pro Stock). This year’s race will once again be broadcast on FS1, including eliminations at 10 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 19. As part of NHRA’s 75th anniversary season, Pedregon was added to the Top 75 Driver List, joining other active NHRA greats including Tony Schumacher, Ron Capps and Greg Anderson. Also added to the list was his brother, two-time Funny Car world champion and Fox lead analyst Tony Pedregon. The prestigious list recognizes drivers for their accomplishments on and off the track, as well as their impact on the NHRA throughout their careers. “I’ve never really reflected much on my career, but being a part of the Top 75 Driver List definitely brought that to light and was really a great honor to be among that group without a doubt,” Pedregon said. Pedregon is looking to this weekend’s event to rejuvenate his 2026 season as the series heads into the second half of the season. If Pedregon wants to earn the win at the DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals presented by PowerEdge, he’ll need to get by all the big hitters in the Funny Car class. Three-time champ Ron Capps currently leads the points after picking up three wins so far in 2026, including most recently in Norwalk. Others to watch will be former champs Matt Hagan, J.R. Todd and Jack Beckman, as well as Funny Car newcomer Jordan Vandergriff and reigning champ Austin Prock, who won last year in Sonoma. “Our plan is to reap the rewards from all the hard work we’ve put in so far this season,” Pedregon said. “All the runs that could have and should have been good runs. We feel we can show what we really have the second half (of the season).” In the Top Fuel ranks, Shawn Langdon has dominated the season with four wins on the year. His teammate and reigning world champ Doug Kalitta won the DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals presented by PowerEdge last season over Antron Brown. Last year’s Pro Stock final was a family affair, as Greg Stanfield defeated his son, Aaron, in the final round. A. Stanfield has two wins on the year in 2026, while reigning world champion Dallas Glenn currently leads the points with his KB Titan Racing teammate and six-time world champion Greg Anderson in second. In Pro Stock Motorcycle, a $25,000 prize on the line for the winner of the one-day GETTRX All-Star Callout on Saturday. Matt Smith is the defending Callout winner, while the eight-bike field this year includes Gaige Herrera, Richard Gadson, Smith, Angie Smith, John Hall, Jianna Evaristo, Chase Van Sant and Steve Johnson. The event also features thrilling competition in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and the popular Top the Cops exhibition race. Sonoma race fans can enjoy the special pre-race ceremonies that introduce and celebrate each of the drivers racing for the prestigious Wally on Sunday and the SealMaster Track Walk. After racing finishes on Sunday, fans are invited to congratulate and celebrate with event winners. Fans always get an exclusive pit pass to the most powerful and sensory-filled motorsports attraction on the planet and can visit Manufacturers Midway, featuring displays, merchandise, food and fun. NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series qualifying will feature two rounds at 4:55 and 6:55 p.m. PT on Friday, July 17, and the final two rounds on Saturday, July 18 at 11:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m. PT on Sunday, July 19. 14. The DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma Raceway marks the start of the second half of the 2026 Mission Foods NHRA Drag Racing Series schedule for the two-car team of Tony Stewart Racing. Leah Pruett will debut her Mobil 1 Top Fuel dragster livery while Matt Hagan returns to the Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage Dodge//SRT Hellcat Funny Car, the scheme he’s managed to pick up both of his 2026 wins in. Returning to driving duties in 2026 after stepping out of the seat to start her family, Leah Pruett has already proven she and her Mobil 1 team should not be taken lightly. Currently sitting third in the Top Fuel championship standings, their 2026 campaign features a victory at the postponed New England Nationals in Bristol, Tennessee, a runner-up finish at the Arizona Nationals, and a No. 1 qualifying position. Pruett enters this weekend after an uncharacteristically early exit at the most recent event in Norwalk, Ohio. For the first time in the 2026 season, Pruett had a first-round loss after qualifying No. 3. “Winning will never get old, and early round losses never stop stinging, but I think I’ve learned that chasing a trophy isn’t what produces your best performance,” Pruett said. “Focusing on being completely prepared, present, and executing every run is what gives you the best chance to win. Sonoma is one of the few tracks I haven’t had some level of Sunday success at, so of course I’d love to add it to that list. But if we’re doing everything at the level we’re capable of (and we are), I trust the result will take care of itself.” With two weekends away from the racetrack, Pruett is more than ready to head into the second half of the 2026 season. The recent hiatus from the track was far from downtime, it served as a vital preparation window, giving Pruett and her crew the chance to reset, refocus, and dial in their long-term championship strategy. “I don’t really look at a break as stepping away from racing. It’s another phase of preparing to race,” Pruett explained. “Sometimes the most productive thing you can do isn’t adding more work, it’s giving your mind and body a chance to absorb all the work you’ve already done, and working on more long-term goals. I definitely missed being in the car these last couple weeks because that’s where I love to be. I also know that showing up restored is very different than just showing up eager. My goal is always to arrive with a full tank instead of running on whatever’s left.” Though Sunday success has eluded Pruett at Sonoma Raceway, she did capture the Top Fuel No. 1 qualifying position at the facility in 2022 and finished runner-up to Steve Torrence in an incredibly close 2021 final round. Torrence took the victory by a mere 0.0027 seconds. Pruett also can’t deny the unique connection Sonoma has to her West Coast roots. “I don’t have a specific memory, per se, but more of a true vibe, especially when being at the Heatwave [Sunglasses] booth signing for fans,” Pruett added. “The Cali culture that the fans bring, mixed with the team at Heatwave and the product always being true to their own coolness is refreshing. No-one is chasing anything, everyone is just living and enjoying the weather, the track, the speeds and the surrounding cities. Overall, it’s the vibe of racing at Sonoma that has always been my favorite.” For her Funny Car teammate, Matt Hagan and his Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage crew, Sonoma Raceway is one of the few tracks on the current NHRA schedule that they have not conquered. Hagan has been No. 1 qualifier three times (2009, 2013, 2025) and he has visited the finals at the Sonoma Nationals three times: (2012, 2019, 2021) but has never won. Most recently, he advanced to the semi-finals in 2025. “Being in the finals that many times in Sonoma and not getting it done is heartbreaking honestly. Besides our new tracks this season, that’s the only track I haven’t won at on tour. It’s one that we really want,” Hagan said. “We’ve had two wins with Jason Johnson this season and this weekend we’re in the JHG car again, so maybe the luck continues and we can capitalize to get my first Sonoma Nationals win. I want that specialty wine goblet trophy.” Currently sitting second in the Funny Car championship standings, Hagan’s 2026 campaign has already been highly successful. The TSR pilot has captured two national event victories this season doubling up with boss Tony Stewart at the NHRA Winternationals and then picking up a hometown win at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, Tennessee. Despite a first-round loss at the most recent event in Norwalk, Ohio, (just his second of the season), Hagan enters the Western Swing with plenty of momentum. “I think we could get a win this year. We are already way further ahead this season than we were last season with two wins in our pocket and being second in points,” Hagan said. “Things are just going really well. We’ve had a few races that we’ve struggled at but at the end of the day, so has everybody else. We feel like we can capitalize on consistency and how well everybody’s working together. I think we have just as good a shot as anybody, probably better.” The momentum and consistency have Hagan eager to return to the seat of his JHG Dodge//SRT Hellcat Funny Car after a busy two-week break. “The two weeks felt like two months. I’m just so ready to get back. We’re going to be out there with the JHG crew, which is like family to me. We spent Fourth of July weekend with them at their house, but I got a lot of farming done too,” said Hagan, an entrepreneur and ranch owner. “It’s been super dry at home, we’ve been in a drought, and we finally got some rain. So I can take a deep breath now… I know that I’m leaving the farm in a good place, crops are going the way they need to and everything looks good. So I’m just anxious to get back to the race track. Get to Sonoma and spend a couple weeks out west. Maybe get some wins and have some fun doing it.” Competition at the DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals begins with four rounds of qualifying – Friday at 5:30 pm and 8:10 p.m. and Saturday at 11:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Eliminations are slated to begin Sunday at 11 a.m. Television coverage of the event will be on FOX Sports 1 (FS1) Sunday with a qualifying show at 10 a.m. ET and eliminations at 10 p.m. ET. 15. Aflac Incorporated, a leading provider of supplemental health insurance in the United States, renewed its partnership with Kalitta Motorsports, the team announced today. The three-car Kalitta Motorsports team races in the National Hot Rod Association’s Mission Foods Drag Racing Series with races contested throughout the United States. Aflac (NYSE: AFL) will be the primary partner on two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Doug Kalitta’s car at the Denso NHRA Sonoma Nationals presented by PowerEdge July 17-19, 2026, at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. “We are pleased to renew our relationship with team Kalitta for another season of racing fun in 2026,” said Aflac Senior Vice President, Broker Strategy Richard Siebert. “Aflac prides itself on paying benefits quickly and efficiently to help our customers in their time of need in the same way that Doug Kalitta races to the finish line ahead of the competition. We wish Doug all the success in the world for this racing season.” Aflac, the no. 1 provider in supplemental insurance products in the United States also is a leading provider of cancer insurance, designed to protect policyholders during their times of need. The company is a 20-time recipient of Ethisphere’s World’s Most Ethical Companies recognition, the only insurance company to be on this prestigious list every year since the inception of the honor in 2007. “Aflac returning to Kalitta Motorsports this season is great news for our race team and for NHRA Drag Racing overall,” Kalitta Motorsports General Manager Chad Head said. “Connie Kalitta started Kalitta Motorsports in the 1950s around the same time the Amos family started their business. Aflac’s commitment to innovation closing the gap between what health insurance does and does not cover, is not unlike what we do at Kalitta Motorsports with a never-ending need to push the envelope and make our cars faster. We hope this relationship remains mutually beneficial, and we welcome Aflac back to Team Kalitta and NHRA Drag Racing.” This story was originally published on July 16, 2026. 18. Jay Leno’s car and motorcycle collection is something truly special, a collection like it exists nowhere else in the world. He’s got several buildings at his place next to Burbank Airport, and they are full of amazing displays of automotive and motorcycle history. All are ready to ride or drive and are maintained regularly so that he can do just that with whatever strikes his fancy. When Jay was on the Tonight Show back in the day, he would drive to the shop in the morning in one of his many cars, hang out and play with cars and such during the day, and then grab a different car and drive it to the studio where the show would start filming sometime around 5:30pm. When he was done with the show he’d drive that car home. And the cycle would repeat. Every single day. Can you imagine having so many cars that you could literally drive a different one every single day and not drive the same one for over a year? Sounds pretty cool to me. And over the years, Jay’s collection has grown partially because his restoration shop has grown as well. There are a great group of craftsmen and enthusiasts who build and maintain his cars, and who he is very close with. On the day that I toured Leno’s place years ago, they were starting up a super rare motorcycle for the very first time, after having gone through a complete restoration that lasted a couple of years. The excitement from Jay and the guys was infectious. They really do love this stuff. So here is a 1940 Indian Chief motorcycle, with a sidecar, that was crashed, totaled, and then remade by Jay’s team. Check it out now. This is the bike that Jay crashed so bad just a couple of year’s ago. Video Description: What happens when a rare 1940 Indian Chief motorcycle—once owned by NFL legend Joe Montana—gets completely totaled in a freak U-turn accident? You completely rebuild it from scratch, better than it ever left the showroom floor! In this week’s episode, Jay Leno shares the unbelievable story of his personal 1940 Indian Chief motorcycle and sidecar. After a brutal crash with an unmarked wire fence knocked Jay off the bike and sent the three-wheeler smashing through bushes and into a building, it was deemed a total loss. But instead of walking away, Jay handed the wreckage to the premier Indian specialists at Kiwi Indian, along with expert fabricator Jimmy Hudson and mechanic George Swift. Together, they discovered the bike’s hidden history of bad Bondo, poor chrome jobs, and structural metal fatigue. Watch as the team uncovers the dangers of hydrogen embrittlement, hand-fabricates a brand-new 110-pound steel sidecar completely from scratch, and completely rebuilds the massive 1300cc flathead engine and three-speed transmission. It’s a gorgeous blue-and-white cruiser that proves vintage American iron never truly dies. The post Jay Leno’s 1940 Indian Chief Was Crashed, Totaled, and Remade From Scratch! 22. Here’s our third gallery of photos from Carlisle, but if you missed the previous photos you can find them all at the link below. (Words and Photos by Joe Grippo) The world’s largest celebration of the Blue Oval went down a few weeks ago in Central Pennsylvania and of course, we were there. The 2026 edition of the Carlisle All Ford Nationals was the second most attended event ever in the history of Carlisle Events, only bested by the 2025 Ford Nats. 3500 plus of Fords Family of Fine Cars packed the 81 acres of the venerable Carlisle Fairgrounds. The Fun Field car show, the massive swap meet, a strong car corral, huge tents and buildings of special displays were bursting at the seams with all matter of FoMoCo greatness. Mustangs, as usual, were the dominant marquee but the Bronco contingent is making a run. 2026 was the 60th anniversary of the Bronco and the owners and fans showed up in droves. Old and new, stock to highly modified, survivors to full race examples, there was something for everyone. The thought to be lost forever, 1 of 1 Boss Bronco was there a few trucks away from a Richard Nixon Secret Service Bronco that lived at Tricky Dicks western White House. 50 years of Roush commemorated The Cat in the Hat and a cross section of Jack’s creations were on display. The Sudden Death Mustang II Street Racer and a killer IMSA GT Prototype were highlights. We spent all of Friday waist deep in the swap meet, hunting for a few specific pieces for the Grippo Racing Mustangs, we snagged some good stuff. Check out the photos for all the potential projects and hardcore stuff that we spotted. One observation was that vintage stuff was plentiful and a god bit of it was reasonably priced. If you needed parts for your FE engine, there were tons of choices for heads, intakes, and internals. The stuff is still out there; you just have to know where to look. The adage remains…”I found it at Carlisle!” The 2027 date is set for June 4-6, so make plans now…..See you there! 24. The puns just write themselves when it comes to a Shop Vac testing video. I mean isn’t the point of a shop vac to suck? Anyways, in the video below you’ll find a bunch of your favorite brands, along with some generics you probably never heard of, going head to head in a battle of wet/dry shop vacs. These things are absolutely essential in a workshop whether to clean the car or to clean up messes. I personally think that there are a lot of times when a shop vac is the right too for the job, but we sometimes reach for the broom instead. A good one is critical and because there is no real way to determine if the specs on one are better than the specs on another, it is really hard to know which one you should buy when shopping for a new model. But here are the real tests. This is how you determine which shop vac is better. Video Description: Shop vacuums were tested for their suction power, air volume, and maximum capacity. Additional testing measured the time required to vacuum a full bucket of sand and five gallons of water. Air quality during operation was also assessed, along with a subjective rating for effectiveness when removing sand from carpet. Brands Tested: Shop-Vac, DeWalt, BAUER, Vacmaster, Stanley, Channellock, RIDGID, and CRAFTSMAN. The post Which Shop Vac Destroyed the Competition? This All Out Shop Vac Test Just Might Suprise You?
