  1. When Ordinary Becomes IconicOn the surface, the Ford Crown Victoria was as ordinary as it got. Yes, it has a V8 and rear-wheel drive, but it had zero performance intentions whatsoever. Besides, the reason it had those was that it followed the tried-and-tested recipe for traditional, full-size American sedans that rode on a ladder-frame chassis. It's a dinosaur, and a relic from days gone by. The fact that its chassis wasn't changed from the Carter to the Obama Administration tells you just how old it was until it was ultimately retired in 2011. And yet, the 'Vic is a well-loved car with legions of fans from coast to coast, and even around the world. Of course, the most well-known version of the Crown Victoria was the one made from 1998 to 2011. That's no surprise, given that every police and taxi agency had these in their respective fleets back in the day. It was the de facto cop car and taxicab, and its headlight pattern was permanently etched in everyone's minds. It gets all the attention, yes, but there's one version of the 'Vic that we say deserves a little more love and appreciation. Ford The Aero Vics of the '90sThe name Crown Victoria was first used in the '50s as the Fairlane Crown Victoria. It was used for only two model years, from '55 to '56, and the name would return in 1980 as the top trim level on the now-downsized Panther-platform Ford LTD. In 1983, all full-size LTDs were renamed LTD Crown Victoria to differentiate them from the smaller midsize versions, a designation that lasted until the model was retired in 1991. In 1992, the LTD prefix was dropped to usher in a new era of full-sized Ford sedans. Now just called Crown Victoria, it was a radical departure from its boxy predecessor. Carrying the internal code of EN53, its arrival came in at the right time, too, as General Motors overhauled its range of full-sized B-Body models that consisted of the Chevrolet Caprice, Buick Roadmaster, and the often-forgotten Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser. Ford A Gamble that Paid OffThe early '90s were an interesting time for traditional large American cars. It was initially thought that both Ford and GM wouldn't build these body-on-frame sedans past the '90s, but sales proved strong enough through the '80s to keep them on the road a little longer. Both companies made big gambles on design, each taking vastly different approaches. In the case of the Crown Victoria, it picked up where the Taurus left off, with a smooth, aerodynamic design. It's that very reason why these were called the Aero Vics, and design elements from its smaller sibling were pretty evident. It had a six-window arrangement, slim headlights, and the no-grille look that automakers tried to make a thing in the early-'90s for the sake of aerodynamics. Despite criticisms of the rather blank-looking nose, the first full year of Aero Vics sold well for its class. If anything, its redesign was better received than the Chevrolet Caprice, although we think both look great now. Maybe it's the rose-tinted glasses. Ford The SpecsAlthough the looks are very '90s, its chassis dates back to 1979. The Panther platform was a response to GM's downsized B-Body models from 1977. While the frame was, indeed, the same, Ford did more than enough changes to the chassis to make it drive and ride like a more contemporary vehicle. That same frame would continue to receive updates even after this generation was replaced. Its new engine was a big deal, too. For the most part, the LTD Crown Victoria came with a 5.0-liter V8 with 150 hp in its final iteration. There was also a 5.8-liter option with, hold on tight, 180 hp, typically reserved for law enforcement applications. The new Crown Vic (as well as the Mercury Grand Marquis) benefitted from the new 4.6-liter Modular V8, and despite the smaller displacement, made more power right out of the box with 190 hp. Okay, it's not a lot of power by today's standards, and it'll easily be dusted off the line by a modern-day Honda Civic. But one has to remember that power ratings were far more conservative over 30 years ago. Still, if 190 hp wasn't enough, a dual-exhaust option bumper that up to 210 hp. As for trims, there were base, LX, and, for 1992 only, the Touring Sedan. Of course, there was also the Taxi Package and Police Interceptor. Ford Constant UpdatesCrown Victoria buyers who aren't cab drivers or police officers are typically more conservative. Hence, in 1993, Ford added a grille to the car to address those who didn't like the look of the first batch of models. At the rear, it also gained a reflector above the trim piece. Oh, airbags and cupholders were added, too. However, there were far greater changes made for '95. Its interior was now aligned with the Grand Marquis, and the dashboard would remain largely unchanged until the end of the Crown Victoria's production. Towards the end of '95, it also received a new four-spoke steering wheel that better integrated the airbag. The front grille was revamped, along with a much larger set of tail lights, a repositioned license plate holder, and new wheel designs. '96 saw a minor bump in torque ratings. Both single- and dual-exhaust models received an additional 5 lb-ft, with ratings of 265 lb-ft and 275 lb-ft, respectively. Horsepower, however, remained the same at 190 hp for single-exhaust and 210 hp for dual-exhaust versions. Ford Why Was it (Mostly) Overlooked? It's not that the Aero Vics sold poorly. For the most part, it consistently sold over 100,000 units throughout its production from 1991 to 1997. Total production was estimated at 630,000 cars over its life. But perhaps the biggest problem of the first standalone Crown Victoria was the lore surrounding the Chevrolet Caprice from the same era. The last (real) Caprice's legacy was practically built upon the 5.7-liter LT1 engine. Despite being introduced later in its life, it boosted the car's image, and the Impala SS further elevated its status. Law enforcement waxed lyrical about it too, relegating the Crown Victoria of the early to mid-90s as 'the other cop car.' The Aero Vic briefly had its moment in the sun in 1997, after the Caprice was discontinued a year prior, but by then, the newer, now more familiar version of the Crown Vic was about to arrive for 1998. Still, if that version of the Crown Victoria flopped, the legacy of that name might be entirely different today. It wouldn't be held in the same reverence, and there wouldn't be repeated calls to bring it back. The Aero Vics walked so that the second-gen Vics could run and establish themselves as an icon. With Ford planning to bring back sedans at some point, perhaps there's room for a new-age Crown Victoria. For as long as it's large and rear-wheel drive, we're good with that - anything but bringing back that nameplate as a crossover. 2. German CollaborationIt's now very common for automotive brands to work together; we see the likes of Porsche and Audi signing agreements to share platforms, technology, and, probably, people, to develop next-generation models. This practice is considered a cost-effective way to build and develop new cars. Back in the day, it was more of an individuality-driven industry where it was more important to one-up the competition. However, the very rare occasions when brands worked together produced some iconic cars; one has just been brought out on display at the Mercedes-Benz Museum. Mercedes-Benz Who Would've Thought? While Mercedes-Benz and Porsche are direct competitors today, before they weren't. Not many of each brand's cars competed against the other, but sales being sales, both still had a healthy rivalry. Fate had intervened for both brands, which would end up working together on a very special car. On display now at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart is the last-ever E500 sedan, with just 262 miles on the odometer. Back in the late 80s, Mercedes wanted to create a model to rival the BMW M5's growing popularity. At the time, the model responsible for that challenge was the W124; the problem lay in the conception of a performance model. While Mercedes had the V8 engine, the wide-body fenders needed for the W14 didn't fit in the assembly line. This led them to contact the neighbor brand Porsche, which, at the time, was cash-strapped, and an agreement was eventually reached under which Porsche would receive the parts and hand-assemble the cars themselves. Mercedes-Benz View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article New Heritage On DisplayPorsche was also involved in the tuning of the chassis and suspension. It was one of the original sleeper models, and under the unassuming W124 body was a V8 making 322 horsepower. The display car is even rarer, being one of just 500 built under the exclusive "limited" trim level. It features special leather interior and iconic EVO 2 rims. The 1995 Mercedes-Benz E500 is part of a limited display at the brand's museum, the Youngtimers exhibit. While the E500 is certainly a centerpiece of the collection, the rest of the display cars are no slouch. Notable models include the 190 E 2.5, E 60 AMG, and SLR McLaren Roadster. This unique exhibit will be running from April 11 until May 31, 2026. Mercedes-Benz View the full article
  3. EVs vs Supercars, AgainWith electric vehicles like the Tesla Model S Plaid dominating quarter-mile races, it has become widely accepted that EVs can keep up with nearly any supercar under these conditions. But would that still hold in this particular matchup from Carwow, where a Chevrolet C8 Corvette Z06 faced off against a Rivian R1T that is roughly twice its size and belongs to an entirely different segment? The Corvette Z06 is a track-focused, street-legal supercar with 670 horsepower from a 5.5-liter naturally aspirated V8 and a curb weight of 1,685 kg (about 3,715 lbs). By contrast, the R1T is a utility-focused truck built for off-roading; this particular example features a quad-motor setup producing a combined 1,025 horsepower, though it weighs 3,170 kg (approximately 6,989 lbs). Corvette Strikes FirstThe first race was a rolling half-mile run, which played to the Corvette Z06’s strengths, as the R1T’s instant torque and all-wheel-drive system can give the electric truck an advantage from a standstill. The rear-wheel-drive Corvette won this race, as well as the 100–0 mph braking test, and another rolling race from a slightly slower 10 mph start. During the standing-start, quarter-mile races, the Corvette Z06 won the first two runs, even though the R1T initially launched harder. But after the Rivian turned off its stability control, the EV pulled off a comeback to finish the standing-start matchup with a 3–2 victory. In the video, the R1T completed the quarter-mile in 10.6 seconds – 0.7 seconds quicker than America’s sports car. carwow/YouTube Performance Isn’t One-DimensionalYes, there are much faster versions of the C8 Corvette, namely the ZR1 and ZR1X, with the latter using a twin-turbo hybrid all-wheel-drive setup that produces a combined 1,250 horsepower. However, the R1T Quad and Corvette Z06 occupy a similar price bracket, at roughly $120,000. It is worth noting that the R1T does not necessarily deliver better overall performance than the Corvette Z06. In theory, the Chevy should handle corners better and carry more speed through them than the electric pickup, especially when equipped with the optional Z07 Performance Package. Still, even though the two belong to entirely different segments, it’s fun to see a traditional ICE car try to beat an EV at its own game. carwow/YouTube View the full article
  4. Volkswagen has not ruled out launching a pickup truck for the United States, but company leadership says the idea remains in the early stages of evaluation rather than active development. Speaking with Autoblog at the 2026 New York Auto Show, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America Kjell Gruner said the company continues to revisit the possibility as part of its broader North American product planning. Related: All the Best Cars, Trucks, and Concepts We Saw At the 2026 New York International Auto Show “We’re still looking at it. It’s something that comes up from time to time, and we continue to evaluate whether there’s an opportunity for Volkswagen in that space.” The comment reflects ongoing internal discussion rather than a defined program. Volkswagen did not indicate any timeline, platform decision, or production plan tied to a pickup, and there is no evidence that a project has moved beyond the exploratory phase. A Familiar Idea That Has Yet To MaterializeThe idea of a Volkswagen pickup for the U.S. is not new. The company has long participated in the segment globally with the Volkswagen Amarok, a midsize truck developed for markets including Europe, Australia, and South America. Despite that experience, the Amarok was never adapted for the U.S., where regulatory requirements and competitive expectations differ significantly. Over the years, Volkswagen has also explored additional pickup concepts that hinted at a broader ambition in the segment. These have ranged from smaller, lifestyle-oriented trucks to more performance-focused ideas, including diesel-powered variants. None of those studies progressed into a production model for North America. Gruner’s comments suggest those conversations have not been abandoned, but they also have not advanced to the point of a committed program. In that sense, the pickup remains an open question rather than an imminent product. Separate From The Chattanooga Strategy — But Not Entirely UnrelatedVolkswagen’s recent production announcement adds useful context to the discussion, even if it does not directly confirm anything about a pickup. The company said it will end local production of the ID.4 at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant in April 2026, shifting focus toward higher-volume vehicles, including the next-generation Volkswagen Atlas, which begins production this summer. At the same time, Volkswagen confirmed it is exploring “pathways for a new vehicle model” specifically aimed at U.S. consumers. No details were provided on what that vehicle might be. Volkswagen A pickup would align with that direction on paper, particularly given the emphasis on volume and market demand. While the production shift shows Volkswagen is recalibrating its U.S. strategy, it does not serve as confirmation that a truck is part of the plan. Related: Volkswagen Could Start Building Military Vehicles Strategic Fit Still Needs To Be ProvenEven if Volkswagen were to move forward, a pickup would present a number of challenges beyond simply entering a popular segment. The U.S. truck market is one of the most competitive and brand-loyal categories in the industry, dominated by long-established players. Any new entrant would need to offer a clear identity, whether that’s through design, capability, pricing, or positioning, rather than attempting to compete directly on traditional terms. Gruner indicated that these are the kinds of questions Volkswagen is still working through. “We have to make sure that if we do something like that, it fits the brand and fits the market. Those are the kinds of things we’re studying.” That suggests Volkswagen is not just asking whether it should build a pickup, but what kind of pickup would make sense for the brand. Volkswagen Still An Open QuestionAt this stage, Volkswagen’s pickup plans remain a possibility under consideration rather than a product in development. Gruner’s comments confirm that the idea continues to surface in internal discussions, but they also underscore how early those discussions remain. The broader context, including the shift in U.S. production strategy and Volkswagen’s renewed focus on high-volume, market-driven vehicles, helps explain why the topic is still relevant. But it does not change the fundamental reality: there is no confirmed program, no timeline, and no indication that a decision is imminent. The question, then, is not whether Volkswagen has considered building a pickup for the U.S. — it clearly has — but whether those discussions will ever translate into a product. View the full article
  5. Windrose Electric, founded by Stanford graduate Han Wen in Antwerp, Belgium, in 2022, has delivered its first production-ready, long-haul electric semi-truck to Texas logistics firm Allogic for $285,000. Having said that, the focal discussion is about how Windrose went from a blank canvas in 2022 to the delivery of a fully certified and road-legal class 8 semi-truck in 2026. Windrose Idea to DeliveryA stark comparison to Windrose is the Tesla Semi; first announced in 2017 with production said to begin in 2019 at a starting price of $150,000 for the low-range variant. However, 9 years after its announcement in 2017, aside from a few pilot trucks for Pepsico in 2022 and having missed earlier production deadlines, the Tesla Semi is finally set to enter production this year, with starting prices potentially exceeding $300,000. So, how did a competitor that began its existence five years after the announcement of the Tesla Semi all but match Tesla’s production and delivery timelines, while Tesla is neither able to meet its production deadlines nor pricing targets? Tesla While Tesla is committed to building its Semi at its Nevada Gigafactory, Windrose chose a more conventional industry approach to manufacturing - with core components like the high-capacity, long-life LFP batteries being sourced from China’s incredibly well-developed EV industry, and final assembly taking place in Antwerp, Belgium. This approach to manufacturing, as well as their parallel certification strategy across continents (certifications which typically take manufacturers several years to procure), significantly accelerated Windrose’s time-to-market. Finally, Windrose developed its semi as an integration platform for existing technologies rather than designing and developing proprietary solutions, with partners such as Kempower, Greenlane, and Geotab, amongst others, providing software and charging infrastructure solutions. Windrose Semi SpecsThe Windrose semi aims to be the electric semi of choice for long-haul journeys; it costs about as much as Tesla’s Semi, and offers a claimed range of 420 miles, marginally lower than Tesla’s 500-mile claimed range, with a charging system that prioritizes compatibility. While its range is lower than Tesla's, it is significantly higher than the class 8 semis currently offered by Peterbilt, Volvo, and BYD, all of which have claimed ranges of around 300 miles per charge, and focus on regional-haul trucking rather than long-haul trucking like the Tesla and Windrose. Windrose Electric If Windrose can beat Tesla’s Semi to the mass market, it could be considerably more difficult for Tesla to regain that lost market share after already having missed deadlines and pricing targets. With additional deliveries scheduled for later this year and an American assembly facility planned, Windrose is setting itself up to disrupt the long-haul trucking industry. View the full article
  6. A Growing List of Bad HabitsDistracted driving is commonly associated with texting behind the wheel. But a survey from Mercury Insurance suggests there are all kinds of distracted driving behaviors across the U.S., grouped into playful “profile type” categories that may be easier to remember. Some of these include the Social Butterfly and Daydreamer. The survey noted that identifying the type of distracted driving habit a driver may have could help address it and, ultimately, reduce the risk of crashes. After all, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report found that 3,275 people were killed and 289,310 were injured in distraction-affected crashes in 2023, which works out to about nine deaths and 890 injuries per day. vorDa from Getty Images The Behaviors Behind the WheelTwo of the most common distracted driving profiles are the Stylist and the Navigator. The Stylist refers to drivers who groom themselves behind the wheel, such as fixing their hair or makeup, and is especially common in states like California and Florida. The Navigator, meanwhile, describes those who interact with GPS or map apps on their phones while driving, a habit frequently seen in states such as New Jersey and New York. There is also the Scroller profile type, which includes drivers who check social media and watch short-form videos – a habit that may resonate more today given the rapid rise of platforms like TikTok. Other profile types include the Multitasker, Foodie, DJ, Shopper, and Yapper, a slang term for someone who talks a lot. The most commonly reported distracted behaviors include drinking beverages (79% of respondents), adjusting navigation (69%), reaching for something (69%), taking a hands-free phone call (66%), and eating food (61%). Alabama has the highest average participation rate across the listed distracted driving behaviors at 45%, followed by Georgia and Massachusetts (42%), West Virginia (41%), and Tennessee (40%). At the other end of the spectrum, New Jersey ranks lowest at 29%, followed by Arizona, Colorado, and Kansas (30%), and Pennsylvania (31%). Of note, Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Montana, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming are excluded due to limited survey responses. Photo by Justin Sullivan on Getty Images The Psychology of DistractionThe survey, conducted in February 2026 among 2,500 U.S. drivers, found that only 8% abstained from distracted driving behaviors over the past year. One reason many continue to engage in them is confidence in their ability to multitask, with 68% saying they believe they can do so. A lack of past accidents may also give drivers the impression that multitasking behind the wheel is harmless, but Mercury Insurance noted that when distraction becomes a habit, the risk of a crash increases over time. Aside from the safety risk, distracted driving can also carry financial consequences. A crash linked to it could lead to higher insurance rates, giving drivers another reason to stay focused behind the wheel. View the full article
  7. Ford has done it again, folks. They've given us yet another feature no one wants. A newly surfaced patent suggests Ford is working on an infotainment system that can read your lips and analyze your facial expressions when voice commands fail. While the idea behind it makes perfect sense, it makes you wonder whether automakers are solving real problems or creating new ones. A Backup for Noisy Cabins Ford Voice control has become a staple in modern infotainment systems, even if many drivers rarely use it. Ford’s patent attempts to address one of its biggest weaknesses: background noise. In situations like driving a Mustang with the roof down or a Bronco with removable doors, microphones can struggle to pick up commands clearly. The proposed cloud-based system uses AI, interior cameras, and sensors to track lip movements and facial expressions when the "ambient noise level inside the vehicle is greater than the threshold." So, while many buyers are asking Ford to make practical, affordable sedans once again, the American carmaker would rather spend its time on features drivers barely use. How “Enhanced Mode” Works USPTO According to the patent, the AI-assisted software won't activate on its own. Instead, once the vehicle detects a noisy cabin, the infotainment screen prompts the driver to enable “Enhanced Mode.” From there, users can choose between "Lip Reading Mode" or "Gesture Detect Mode." That means you can whisper, nod your head, frown, and even roll your eyes – Enhanced Mode will interpret it and act accordingly. Clever? Yes. Needed? Absolutely not. The system relies on machine learning models trained to interpret these movements, similar to how other automakers like Toyota and BMW are expanding voice tech. With so many brands leaning into AI nowadays, experts warn that the surge in demand for advanced chips may lead to an automotive chip shortage, once again. Innovation vs. Overengineering Ford As forward-thinking as it sounds, the idea brings some obvious concerns. Privacy is at the top of the list. A system that actively monitors your face, and perhaps even your entire cabin, will not sit well with every driver. And since it's a cloud-based system, it will depend on signal, meaning it will be rendered useless when traveling on empty country roads or through tunnels. Not to mention the fact that Ford has had to recently recall more than 250,000 SUVs over software issues, making us skeptical about Ford's AI-assisted software reliability. But the main question many drivers will have is: Why? Why do we have to evolve a feature that basically no one uses? Many drivers still prefer simple, physical controls that work instantly without interpretation. While voice commands can be useful to perform mundane tasks like opening the sunroof or turning on the A/C, physical buttons do the same job, but faster and simpler. And the last thing drivers want is to feel paranoid in their own cars View the full article
  8. While scrolling through online listings for Royal Enfield Interceptors, one rider noticed something odd. Someone had listed a completely stock Interceptor and called it a cafe racer. That raised a real question: what actually makes a cafe racer, and how has the term changed over the years? The link between performance and style in motorcycling goes way back. Before the 1960s, fast and aerodynamic bikes always turned heads. But the cafe racer movement brought style and performance together in a […] The post The Rise, Fall and Rise of Cafe Racers appeared first on Return of the Cafe Racers. View the full article
  9. The storm isn't at its worst yet, and the roads are already starting to close. The I-80 is already partially closed between Emigrant Gap and Alta for emergency work, and Caltrans has trucks stopped at three screening points across the summit corridor: eastbound at Applegate, westbound at Overland Trail Road in Truckee and at Mogul west of Reno. Maximum chains arre required at all three, with permit loads banned. On the other end of I-80, a high wind advisory on the Bay Bridge means campers and trailers are not recommended there either. Both ends of the road between the Bay Area and Reno are under restrictions right now, before the worst of the storm arrives. The Winter Storm Warning runs through Monday afternoon. NWS point forecasts for Donner Pass called for 5 to 9 inches overnight, another 8 to 12 inches today (Sunday), and as much as 15 to 21 inches at higher elevations. Wind chill has dropped to -3, while crest gusts are forecast to reach 90 mph. Anyone not already in the mountains has no reason to be heading there now. What Is Happening Right NowThe forecast called for snow levels to drop to 6,000 to 7,000 feet by yesterday evening. They got there by the afternoon instead, roughly 1,000 feet lower and several hours early. Accumulation built quickly on road segments that were getting rain Saturday morning, which is exactly the kind of fast transition that catches people mid-drive. The first of two Pacific systems came ashore Friday night and has been producing steady snowfall since. The second, which is colder and carries more moisture, arrived overnight. NWS I-80 is still technically open over the summit with chain controls, but there is a partial closure near Alta for emergency work and the distance between the current situation and a full shutdown is not large. In February, a similar setup closed 60 miles of I-80 from Colfax to the state line, and left hundreds of people sitting in their cars for hours. The forecast tonight is for heavier snow and stronger winds than those that triggered that closure. What To Expect Tonight Through MondayToday (Sunday). There is a pattern with these storms where people assume Sunday afternoon is the recovery window. It is not. Snow is continuing through the day, another 8 to 12 inches at pass level with 15 to 21 possible higher up, and wind chill is staying below zero. Road crews are still working through what fell overnight. How quickly they can reopen anything depends on whether the wind cooperates, and right now the forecast gives no reason to think it will. A full closure of I-80, if that hasn't happened already, remains the most likely outcome before the day it out. When that happens, there is no detour across the Northern Sierra. NWS Sacramento is calling for 2 to 5 feet of total accumulation above 6,000 feet by Monday. Monday. The snow tapers into the afternoon but compacted spring snow is heavier than midwinter powder, takes longer to plow, and refreezes overnight into a surface that can be harder to drive on than what the storm itself put down. The earliest realistic crossing window is Monday midday, more likely Tuesday morning. The Other HighwaysHighway 50 to South Lake Tahoe. Echo Summit at 7,382 feet carries the same closure risk as I-80 with fewer plowing resources. When both close at the same time, which they did in February, there is no alternative route across the central Sierra. Highway 395 and the eastern Sierra. The highway itself gets 2 to 6 inches with gusts to 40 mph, which is manageable for a driver who is paying attention. The problem is everything west of it. Mammoth and June Mountain access roads face 6 to 12 inches on routes that are not plowed to interstate standards. Carson Pass and Highway 89 are higher, more exposed, and will close before 395 does. They are not worth planning around this weekend. Interstate 5 through the Grapevine (Southern California). This is the part of the storm that most people have not been watching. NWS Los Angeles has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the I-5 corridor, the San Gabriel Mountains and the Ventura and Santa Barbara County mountains, running through 11 AM Monday. Snow levels along I-5 are dropping to 4,500 to 5,000 feet tonight into Monday morning, with 5 to 10 inches possible above 6,000 feet. The Grapevine connects the Central Valley to Los Angeles. It carries some of the heaviest truck and commuter traffic in the state, and when it closes or goes to chain controls the backups are measured in hours, not minutes. Anyone driving between LA and Bakersfield Sunday through Monday morning needs to check conditions before leaving. The Snowpack ProblemThis storm is hitting bare ground. The April 1 snowpack measurement came in at 18% of average, second-lowest on record. Northern Sierra was at 6%. March was California's warmest and driest on record and most of the existing snowpack melted weeks ahead of schedule. For road conditions, that matters significantly. Two to five feet of heavy, wet spring snow is landing on asphalt and terrain that have been dry and warm for weeks. That snow bonds to road surfaces differently than snow falling on established pack. It freezes into a harder layer at the interface, which matters for how quickly roads come back after the storm passes. The February storm was comparable in size, but it landed on snowpack that at least existed. Zone ForecastsMono County (NWS Reno, Winter Storm Warning): 2 to 6 inches west of Highway 395, 6 to 12 above 8,000 feet, up to 24 on the crest. Crest gusts to 90 mph, 40 mph along 395. Through Monday afternoon. Lake Tahoe area (NWS Reno, Winter Storm Warning): 6 to 10 inches around the lake, 12 to 28 above 7,000 feet. Northern Sierra / Western Plumas County (NWS Sacramento, Winter Storm Warning): 2 to 5 feet above 6,000 feet, up to 5 feet on the peaks. 2 to 4 inches possible down to 4,000 feet. Winds to 45 mph. Heaviest snow through midday Sunday, continuing Monday. Southern California mountains (NWS Los Angeles, Winter Weather Advisory): I-5 corridor, San Gabriel Mountains, Ventura and Santa Barbara County mountains. 5 to 10 inches above 6,000 feet. Snow levels dropping to 4,500 to 5,000 feet tonight into Monday. Through 11 AM Monday. Photo by picture alliance on Getty Images If You Are On The RoadAnyone already on a mountain highway who sees conditions worsening should get off at the nearest exit, gas station or lodge. Chains are required above 4,000 to 5,000 feet and AWD does not exempt drivers from R-3 controls. Keep a full tank before entering the mountains. If stranded, stay in the vehicle and run the engine no more than 15 minutes at a time with a window cracked. Check Caltrans for current highway conditions, chain controls and closures. 11. High Performance Track ToysA key aspect of high-performance ownership has been the ability to take the cars to a track day. Previously, brands could create models that catered to both on-road and on-track use, but as the track day scene grew, manufacturers decided to build models for those who want the ultimate track toys. Lamborghini is known for taking things to the extreme, and the 2022 Essenza SCV12 is a prime example of an ultra-high-performance track toy. Built for a lucky few, one model is now on the market for a new owner. RM Sotheby's View the 1 images of this gallery on the original article One of The Most Powerful EverThe car in question is now listed on reputable auction house RM Sotheby's. This Essenza is just one of the forty built by the Italian automaker. Currently, the car on sale has only 313 miles on the odometer. Deliveries of the Essenza began in April 2021 and stopped by the end of 2022. This car was finished in bronze with a black interior and comes complete with a flight-case delivery kit, which includes spare brake and exhaust parts, a refueling bottle, wheel nut key, and battery charger. Also included in the sale is an optional flight case – numbered 28 to match the car with a complete set of wheels, tire warmers, car lifter, and MSA box with cable. As a project, the Essenza was a tribute to the brand's legendary naturally aspirated V12 history. At the time, it was sold as the most powerful non-hybrid V12, making a pure 819 hp the old-school way. Since this is an expression of the ultimate track toy, the car features an in-house-built carbon fiber monocoque chassis built to the standards of the FIA Le Mans Hypercar class, which meant it didn't need a roll-cage, a first at the time. Lamborghini said this car was used as a laboratory of ideas, featuring novel features such as a suspension system directly bolted to the load-bearing gearbox. Most of the aerodynamic components lead to the Essenza producing more downforce at speed than a GT3 race car. The steering wheel had an F1-style layout, with a digital display, steering wheel buttons for easy access, and an integrated paddle shifter for the 6-speed sequential transmission. RM Sotheby's View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Exclusive ClubA car this capable from a brand this legendary means that buying an Essenza grants access to a very exclusive club. Owners are part of the Club Essenza program, which places Lamborghini as the sole keeper of the car in an exclusive hangar at the home base in Sant'Agata, Italy. Since Lambo keeps the car for you, it is also up to them to provide the logistics for the owners to experience the Essenza through exclusive track days. Owners can also keep track of their precious cars through a 24/7 app connected to cameras in the hangar. It was originally sold for $2.5 million, but the current listing has a bidding range of $1.4 to $2 million. While still expensive, those who want an exclusive experience, coupled with the ultimate homage to Lamborghini's legendary V12, have a chance of getting it for less than what it cost new. 12. On a Nevera hypercar, Rimac has elegantly integrated a charge status indicator into the bodywork with a trio of lights on each rear fender, just behind the side intakes. But Porsche may have found an even better way, according to a new patent filed in Germany, reports Motor1. Instead of light fixtures, the patent proposes integrating a technology that would allow racing stripes to appear and fade to indicate various things, like the charge status or even the drive mode of the vehicle. To achieve this, Porsche proposes using an electronic paper or paramagnetic coating, calling to mind BMW's use of color-changing E Ink. Porsche Has Many Potential Uses for Its New Tech Porsche Much like electrochromic glass that can change opacity depending on the electrical current applied to it, so these stripes could instantly change color depending on Porsche's requirements for the technology, and since a film or coating would be relatively easy to apply, there are plenty of potential uses. For example, a racecar could have entirely different liveries depending on the competition or country in which it is racing, a road-going EV could show different colors while recharging to show how much the battery has been replenished, or something like a GT3 RS could show different colors to indicate whether it's accelerating, braking, or heading for the pits on a track day. We could also see Porsche using such a technology to allow the wealthiest customers of the Sonderwunsch department to have multiple themes for their cars, allowing them to change the look of their 911s on a whim. Related: Porsche Is Developing a Shifter That Acts Like a Manual or Automatic It may also have a safety benefit on the road, with a car potentially capable of changing its color or displaying messages when the driver encounters a hazard, like an accident or ice on the asphalt. And using a smartphone app, a customer may be able to see which tire has lower pressure or which wheel is misaligned through a change in color on that corner of the car. Finally, law enforcement could use such a system on unmarked cars, changing what looks like a normal car into a police car at the touch of a button. Potential Drawbacks to Porsche's New Patent Porsche There are several issues with this idea, not least of which is the added cost and complexity of integrating such a technology into the production process. There's also the question of whether such a system could safely be ceramic-coated or otherwise protected from the elements, and how it might be repaired if damage were sustained. Also, if this system is not automatically controlled, we can see criminals using instantly changeable aesthetics nefariously, perhaps to evade law enforcement. But as always, a patent is not evidence of production intent, and automakers often file to protect clever innovations without any use therefore being planned. Then again, Rolls-Royce seems to be readying a new kind of hood opening that was patented late last year for its production electric SUV, so sometimes, these ideas are a glimpse into the future. 13. BYD launched its Denza Z9 GT in Europe with a bang. Daniel Craig, the most recognisable face of James Bond, fronted the campaign. The car itself is genuinely impressive: a 1,140-horsepower electric shooting brake that charges from 10 to 97 percent in nine minutes, covers up to 372 miles on the WLTP cycle, and crab-walks into parking spaces. In China, it starts at around $39,300. In Europe, that same car starts from roughly $134,500. That’s more than three times the price. Europe's tariff wall on Chinese EVs is real and significant, but it does not explain a gap this wide. Denza View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article What the Numbers Actually ReflectThe EU's countervailing duties on Chinese-built EVs sit at 17 percent for BYD, on top of a standard 10 percent import tariff. That combined 27 percent bite adds roughly $10,500 to a $39,000 base. Shipping, homologation, suspension retuning for European roads, dealer networks, warranty infrastructure, and VAT stack on top of that. Still, none of this math produces a number anywhere near $134,000. Denza View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Analysis from S&P Global Mobility suggests the price gap between Chinese models at home and in Europe is unlikely to be explained solely by import tariffs and shipping costs, pointing instead to a deliberate OEM pricing strategy. BYD is choosing to price the Denza here. At $134,500, the Z9 GT just undercuts the Porsche Panamera. That is not a coincidence. This is a car placed deliberately beside Europe's most aspirational names, not beneath them. The "Cheap Chinese EV" Narrative Has a Shelf LifeThere is a persistent assumption that Chinese EVs are inherently budget products. At the mass-market end, BYD has weaponised cost efficiency brilliantly, with analysts identifying a sustainable 25 percent manufacturing cost advantage over traditional European rivals. But the Denza Z9 GT is aimed at a different buyer entirely. It is not meant to be another race-to-the-bottom product. It is built to compete on prestige, technology, and desirability. BYD Lexus, Genesis, and Infiniti have already demonstrated the enormous challenge of cracking the European premium market. Each arrived with technically strong products. None fully broke through. Brand trust at this price point is built slowly, and buyers spending six figures tend to be conservative about unfamiliar badges. BYD knows this. The triple-the-price strategy is partly about surviving that reality, using the margin to fund European infrastructure, retail expansion, and the kind of marketing that put James Bond in the front seat. Tariffs made it more expensive. Ambition made it this expensive. View the full article
  14. Genesis Takes Aim at AMG, M, and RSGenesis is still a young automaker, but it's already making some of the top cars in their respective classes. Its models have won over critics, the owners are generally happy, and the continuous push for improvement is worthy of applause. 20 years ago, the idea of a standalone Korean luxury marque was almost unimaginable, but Genesis aced its homework, and the results are showing. Now, it's taking aim at the luxury performance heavyweights from Germany. In late 2025, Genesis launched the Magma brand, and there are several models to look forward to down the line. It had already announced a model – the GV60 Magma, which will arrive this summer. Adam Lynton/Autoblog View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article The GV60 MagmaIt's easy to dismiss the GV60 Magma as a posher version of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. The thing is, it's much more than that. While the two cars share the same basic architecture, the Magma takes a different route with an extra dose of luxury. Whereas the Hyundai places greater emphasis on rowdiness, the Genesis elevates it into a more refined package. Of course, there are some sporting bits here and there, so we couldn't really call it a sleeper. Its slippery body is adorned with very visible aero enhancements, and the orange brake calipers proudly show off its more athletic intentions. The cabin is standard GV60 fare, though there are lashings of suede and orange highlights to set it apart from non-Magma versions. Power output is exactly the same as the Ioniq 5 N. That means 641 hp, 583 lb-ft of torque, and an estimated 0 to 60 time of under four seconds. But outright speed isn't the main highlight here. Instead, the GV60 Magma flexes its intelligent drive modes, and we'll likely see it in future Magma products. Genesis GT and Sprint ModesLike the Ioniq 5 N, the GV60 Magma has a dedicated button that lets the user scroll through various drive modes. Simply dubbed the Magma button, it houses GT and Sprint modes, both of which are pretty clever. GT Mode firms up the suspension, sharpens up the steering, and puts the motor and e-LSD in a higher setting. The all-wheel drive system also switches to rear-wheel drive speeds pick up, but reverts to all-wheel drive the deeper the pedal input. As for Sprint Mode, it puts everything in its most aggressive arrangement. Everything is set to Sport + mode, stability control intervention is further reduced, and it stays in all-wheel drive at all times, constantly shifting power between the front and rear wheels. Engaging either mode activates the auto-boost function, giving the driver a 15-second window to unleash all the horses once the accelerator is fully depressed. Sprint Mode then unlocks launch mode, race mode, and the virtual gear shifts. Adam Lynton/Autoblog Think of GT and Sprint as a 'set and forget' mode that eliminates the need to dig into the infotainment system to configure it. Mind you, there is still a wide variety of individual adjustments that can be made, but pressing the Magma button simplifies most of them. That said, we'll only know how it works once we get behind the wheel of one. But given how good the Ioniq 5 N already is, we have even greater expectations from the GV60 Magma. 15. Keeping The Tradition AliveEvery automotive manufacturer aims for true brand loyalty: a repeat customer, and even better, the whole family across generations staying with one brand. That type of legacy buyer is tough to have nowadays, with an ever-growing list of new car brands and a widening variety of preferences. Which is why when stories come along of true loyalists, we can't help but be in awe. Just like a family from Canada who've spent most of their lives as Ford people. Ford View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Historical SignificanceBill Knapp is the main character in this story, as he set out to fully restore a classic 1936 Ford pickup and started from the ground up. What makes Bill's story even more interesting is that the Knapp family has a close relationship with Ford. The Patriarch, Bill's two brothers, nephew, and sister have either worked for or continue to work with the Blue Oval. It took a full seven years for Bill to complete his restoration journey of the pickup, but he claims every moment calling junkyards and even handcrafting some components himself led to a trip down his family's storied history with the brand. Bill's sister, Mary, emailed Ford executives about the Knapp's story. She says that every time she sees the truck, it reminds her of all the family barbecues spent reminiscing about each person's favorite Ford model. Bill's father, Leo, began working for Ford in the 1930s, during one of the brand's peak periods of dominance. The Pickup is a continuation version of the Model TT, which was a converted Model T. The pickup, though, looked towards the next generation and went with an Art Deco design. It was powered by a 221-cubic-inch V8 that produced 85 horsepower. The truck sold 820,000 throughout its production run. Ford View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Powering ThroughBill used to own a 1936 Ford Pickup back in the day, but lent it to the community parade and said they could keep it as a service vehicle. He never stopped missing his truck, so when a good friend and car restorer, Shawn Dixon, tracked down a potential restoration project, Bill went all in despite the beat-up condition. A car this old made sourcing parts an issue; most 1936 model trucks were cut and modified into hotrods, most with more powerful engines. Because some parts were near-impossible to find, Knapp and Dixon fabricated some themselves, including the fenders, dashboard, door panels, and even reupholstered the seats. Under the hood is a custom high-performance V8 from a company in Georgia, which Bill says was the perfect last touch to the build. Ford View the full article

  17. Executive SpecThe De Tomaso Pantera remains one of the more distinctive icons in automotive history, combining Italian styling with an American V8 powertrain. One MY1972 example is currently listed on Bring a Trailer, and this particular car is made even more special by its provenance, as it is currently owned by Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Farley. This “Pre-L” 1972 De Tomaso Pantera was delivered new to Ford Aerospace’s Aeronutronic division as a pool vehicle before being registered to a private owner in Ventura, California, in July 1974. It then spent nearly two decades at the Yankee Candle Car Museum in Massachusetts and was later sold on BaT in 2018, before Farley acquired it six years later. Since leaving the museum, the car has undergone extensive rework, with the seller noting that $45,000 was spent under the Ford CEO's care. Bring a Trailer Bringing It Up to SpeedExterior-wise, the wedge-shaped car received a paint correction, and clear front corner lenses were added after it sustained damage during a test drive in 2018. It was also fitted with QA1 double-adjustable coilovers, while its power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes were overhauled, and the unassisted steering rack was replaced. Inside, the bucket seats received replacement bolsters and were reupholstered in black vinyl with houndstooth cloth inserts. Under the current ownership, the car also gained a Ferrero steering wheel, an aftermarket stereo and speakers, a new headliner, and retrimmed side panels. The mid-mounted Cleveland V8 was rebuilt by Cobra Automotive of Connecticut in 2023, with the cylinders bored 0.030 inches over and static compression raised to a claimed 11.2:1 through the use of aftermarket internals such as Sportsman flat-top pistons. Output figures were not disclosed, though power is sent to the rear wheels through a ZF five-speed manual transaxle. In addition, the car is fitted with 15-inch Campagnolo cast magnesium wheels finished in bronze Cerakote, along with an upgraded cooling system installed during previous ownership. Bring a Trailer Not Exactly CheapGiven the work done, it is no surprise that the current bid stands at $126,000. The Pantera is located in Glendale, Wisconsin, with the listing set to expire on Thursday. The odometer shows about 34,000 miles, with roughly 2,000 of those added under current ownership. The seller notes that Farley loves to drive regularly, though his attention now appears to be split between enjoying analog performance cars like this and the GT40 and tackling far bigger challenges at Ford, including the project to build affordable electric trucks that target a $30,000 price point. 18. Mercedes’ Sunroof Problem Isn’t Going AwayExploding panoramic sunroofs have been a lingering problem for Mercedes-Benz – one that’s been hanging over its head for years. What began as a handful of owner complaints has already grown into a class-action lawsuit that’s still making its way through the courts. The class-action lawsuit focuses on claims that some Mercedes models have panoramic sunroofs that can suddenly explode. It was filed in 2023 by plaintiffs Natalie Bolling, Shawn Hale, Latoya Foster-Gittens, and Lisa Phlegar. Owners talk about hearing a sharp, gunshot-like crack, then watching glass pour into the cabin – even at highway speeds. The complaint says this can happen without any obvious cause, turning a high-end feature into a real safety risk. Mercedes-Benz insists there’s no solid evidence of a defect and says most of these incidents are caused by factors such as road debris. But after years of back-and-forth, both sides are still digging in for a long fight. What the Lawsuit ClaimsThe core of the lawsuit is simple: the design of the panoramic sunroof might be the problem. Plaintiffs say that using thinner tempered glass and certain manufacturing methods makes these sunroofs more likely to fail, even in everyday driving. What makes this lawsuit different is that it covers a wide range of Mercedes models, not just one vehicle or a single production run. The claim is that the same defect could affect a lot of owners. Plaintiffs also say Mercedes knew about the problem as early as 2006, based on customer complaints and internal reports, but didn’t warn buyers or issue any recalls. Of note, the automaker did recall certain units over the same issue in 2023. Mercedes-Benz C-Class (2011–present) Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class (2011–present) Mercedes-Benz R-Class (2011–2012) Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class (2014–present) Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class (2011–present) Mercedes-Benz S-Class (2011–present) Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2011–present) Mercedes-Benz M-Class (2012–present) Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (2011–2019) Mercedes-Benz GL-Class (2011–present) Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class (2012–present) Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class (2013–2020) Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class (2011–present) Mercedes-Maybach S 600 (2015–2017) Mercedes-Benz SLC-Class (2013–2020) Mercedes is fighting these claims in court, saying there’s no proof of a real defect or any cover-up. The company also argues it met its warranty obligations and points out that some cars kept working fine even after the sunroof shattered. AOL On What Happens NextThe case has already passed its first big test. A federal judge let some of the main claims move forward, while tossing out others. That means the legal battle is still very much alive. With that ruling, the most important claims – such as alleged defects and consumer protection issues – remain on the table. But the court is clearly narrowing things down, not just letting every argument through. Next up is discovery, where both sides will dig through internal documents, engineering choices, and reports of what actually happened. This phase could be the turning point that shows whether the problem is widespread or just a handful of unlucky cases. View the full article
  19. A Familiar Truck, With a Not-So-Familiar UpgradeIt’s no secret that the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is due for a full redesign, with the next-generation model expected to land later this year as a 2027 model. Between spy shots, early renderings, and design leaks, we already have a rough idea of where things are heading visually. But the bigger story is what’s changing inside the cabin. Apparently, the 2027 Silverado High Country will finally get a feature that’s been exclusive to its more upscale GMC sibling. It might seem like a minor update, but it hints at Chevrolet rethinking what drivers should expect from a Silverado. Chevrolet/USPTO A Long-Overdue Comfort FeatureAccording to GM Authority, the 2027 Silverado High Country will offer massaging front seats for the first time. It’s not a headline-grabbing feature, but it addresses a clear gap in the current Silverado’s comfort options. Of note, the outgoing Silverado doesn’t offer massage functionality at all, even in its most expensive trims. Meanwhile, the GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate has had it for a while, reinforcing GMC’s positioning as the more upscale alternative within General Motors’ truck lineup. It’s not confirmed yet if the feature will be standard or optional, but its addition shows Chevrolet is taking comfort more seriously as buyers expect more from their full-size trucks. AutoYa/YouTube Bigger Changes Beneath the SurfaceThe massaging seats are just one piece of a larger update. The new Silverado will get a more refined cabin, better materials, and a bigger focus on in-cabin tech. Patent images also point to a more modern, layered dashboard design. Engine updates are coming, too. The 2.7-liter turbo is expected to get more power, and the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel could offer a long-range setup aiming for up to 1,000 miles per tank. There’s also talk of a new small-block V8 and a hybrid option as GM brings electrification back to its trucks. Both the next-gen Silverado 1500 and the GMC Sierra 1500 are expected to debut later this year, with the 2027 models hitting showrooms. 20. The Supercar Before SupercarsThe rivalry between Lamborghini and Ferrari is widely recognized in automotive circles, with the former introducing its first true contender in 1966 with the Miura – widely regarded as the world’s first supercar. Now, a report from The Supercar Blog suggests the Italian marque could revive the iconic nameplate this year to mark its 60th anniversary. However, the revival is expected to take the form of a special edition, similar to the Aventador Miura – a tribute unveiled in 2016 to mark the Miura’s 50th anniversary. This time, the Revuelto, the Aventador’s successor, is reportedly set to receive a Miura-inspired edition, which could debut at Pebble Beach in August. Lamborghini Classic Inspiration, Modern ExecutionThe report states that the Revuelto Miura Edition could feature a two-tone exterior, echoing the Miura’s signature look. Inside, the cabin is expected to include retro-inspired touches, such as special-edition badging. Given these changes, the model will likely be priced above the standard Revuelto, which already starts at over $600,000. As for the powertrain, no mechanical changes are expected. For reference, the Revuelto uses a 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 paired with a tri-motor setup, producing a combined 1,001 horsepower. It is one of the few models to retain a V12 amid increasingly stringent emissions regulations, alongside cars like the Aston Martin Vanquish and Ferrari 12Cilindri. Kyle Edward Not the Only Card to PlayThe Revuelto Miura Edition could be just one of four models Lamborghini plans to introduce this year. These may simply be new variants of the existing lineup, especially considering that the Urus, the brand’s best-selling model, is unlikely to go away anytime soon, while the Temerario has just succeeded the Huracán. In addition, the brand’s first EV, the Lanzador, has reportedly been delayed, with the company now indicating it could arrive as a plug-in hybrid instead of a fully electric model. Following the Aventador Miura’s production run of 50 units, the Revuelto Miura will reportedly be limited to 60 examples, in line with their respective anniversary celebrations. The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance takes place during Monterey Car Week in California, where Lamborghini is expected to reveal new developments, while announcements are also anticipated at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K. in July.
