  2. The second-generation Toyota GR86 first went into production back in 2021, which means a successor can’t be too far off. Toyota’s most affordable sports car, the current GR86 shares a platform and engine with the equally fun Subaru BRZ. While concrete information about the next GR86 has been scarce until now, a Japanese publication called Best Car magazine recently shared new details about the next GR86’s powertrain. If you’re expecting a big boost in power, you may be disappointed—but the rumor suggests Toyota has worked hard to maintain the car’s simple, lightweight philosophy. Related: Which 2026 Toyota GR 86 Trim Level Is The Smart Buy? New 2.0-Liter Mild Hybrid Toyota According to information received by Best Car magazine, the next GR86 will have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a mild hybrid system. Previous rumors suggested the GR86 may use the turbo three-cylinder engine from the GR Yaris, but a four-pot now looks likelier. The publication also shared a spec sheet for the 2028 GR86, which suggests the new engine has an output of 217 horsepower, which is actually a bit less than the 228 hp in the current model. However, the good news is that a curb weight of under 2,900 lbs is expected, just like the current car. This is the advantage of using a mild hybrid system, which doesn’t add as much weight as a normal hybrid. At under 170 inches in length, the upcoming GR86 will be only slightly longer than the current model, so the compact footprint that contributes to it being such an engaging sports car will still be intact. The spec sheet shown by the Japanese magazine suggests six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions will be available, with power going to the rear wheels. Related: 2026 Subaru BRZ Pricing Makes Toyota GR86 Look Like A Bargain What About The Mazda Collaboration? Mazda Last year, rumors suggested that Toyota was collaborating with Mazda on a new platform that would be shared between the next GR86 and MX-5. While that plan may still happen, it’s now understood it will only come to light for the fourth-gen GR86, not the third-gen model expected around 2028. It’s easy to see why such a collaboration makes sense. Both the MX-5 and GR86 are lightweight, uncomplicated sports cars. Toyota and Mazda already work together, with the CX-50 Hybrid adopting the same powertrain as the previous RAV4 Hybrid. Mazda is currently working on a new Miata, which it says will weigh around 2,200 lbs; this suggests that a hybrid powertrain won’t happen at all. However, Mazda is open to a hybrid for its iconic sports car if the tech doesn’t add too much weight. As for the next BRZ, it’s no longer expected to be closely related to the GR86. What It Means Toyota The latest information about the new GR86 is promising. A mild hybrid system modernizes the car’s powertrain but should not detract from its character. The specifications suggest the car will not grow much in size and its weight will be well below 3,000 lbs. It all points to a car that’s very much in keeping with the 86’s ethos of uncomplicated sports car fun. The new powertrain suggests the GR86 will still be quite affordable, too, which will keep some daylight between it and the next Supra, which may adopt a hybrid turbo-four powertrain. Toyota’s new junior sports car looks destined to keep at least one GR model attainable, which is great news for enthusiasts on a tighter budget. View the full article
  3. I realize the numbers are small, but there are people out there that would like a C8 Corvette with a clutch pedal. And as a guy who drives a stick shift car most days, I understand the allure. But I can also tell you that the DCT that comes in a C8 is far better than any of us that love to shift gears outselves. We romanticize the opposite, but the truth is that a DCT is capable of shifting so much quicker than you or I. It’s mind boggling actually, and if you know how a DCT works then you know why. They aren’t that complicated actually. But when Tremec had a billet aluminum trans axle on display at the 2025 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, that was NOT a DCT, everyone immediately assumed it was for a C8 Corvette and that these were coming to showrooms near you. Or at least that they would be available in kit form. But not one person had a single bit of real intel, just a bunch of conjecture. Until now. That’s because Mike Kidd with Tremec joined Jamie and Justin for the Automotive Advantage Podcast and gave them all the real info. Video Description: The Tremec Manual Transaxle stopped SEMA cold. Phones are ringing off the hook. And yet… the Corvette world isn’t sure what to believe. In this episode of Automotive Advantage, we sit down with Mike Kidd, Aftermarket Business Unit Manager at Tremec, to get the straight story on the manual transaxle that became the most talked-about Corvette product and why the internet’s assumptions about it being a factory C8 option were dead wrong. Mike sets the record straight, breaks down what this transmission actually is, who it’s built for, and when you can get your hands on one. We also dig into why manual transmissions are dying in production vehicles but why the aftermarket demand has never been stronger. 8. A late-season winter storm is set to bury the Northern Sierra Nevada under feet of snow this weekend, prompting the National Weather Service in Sacramento to issue a Winter Storm Watch for the west slope and Western Plumas County above 4,500 feet. The heaviest impacts are expected from late Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. What to ExpectThe NWS is forecasting 12 to 24 inches of snow above 4,500 feet, with 36 to 48 inches possible at the highest peaks. Snow levels will start relatively high Friday night, around 6,000 to 7,000 feet, before dropping sharply to 4,000 to 4,500 feet by late Saturday into Sunday as colder air filters in behind the second, stronger low. Wind gusts up to 45 MPH will compound the snowfall, reducing visibility across exposed passes and ridgelines. The most intense accumulation window runs from Saturday morning through midday Sunday. Drivers on I-80 over Donner Pass, US-50 over Echo Summit, and routes including CA-88 at Carson Pass and CA-89 should anticipate chain controls and the possibility of full closures during the heaviest snowfall rates. Road ConditionsChain controls on I-80 are virtually certain once snow levels drop below 6,000 feet Saturday evening, and Caltrans may implement full closures over Donner Summit if snowfall rates and visibility deteriorate beyond manageable thresholds. Wet, heavy spring snow will pack onto road surfaces faster than midwinter powder, overwhelming plows during peak intensity. Secondary mountain roads will become impassable quickly. Caltrans recommends checking QuickMap or calling 511 before attempting any Sierra crossing this weekend. Winter Driving TipsLate-season Sierra storms catch drivers off guard because many have already removed winter gear from their vehicles. If you must cross the mountains this weekend, carry chains even if you drive an AWD vehicle; chain controls do not exempt AWD when Caltrans moves to R-3 restrictions. Heavy, wet spring snow reduces visibility faster than lighter midwinter powder, and it packs onto windshields and roofs quickly, so clear your entire vehicle before driving. Stock your trunk with an emergency kit including a phone charger, blanket, water, and a shovel. For a full breakdown on handling snow, ice, and rain behind the wheel, review Autoblog's guide to best practices for winter driving. The safest move is to delay any Sierra crossing until Sunday evening at the earliest, once the second low clears and Caltrans crews have time to treat and reopen passes. TimingSnow begins Friday evening and intensifies sharply Saturday morning. The worst window for travel runs from Saturday predawn through Sunday afternoon. Conditions should begin improving Sunday evening as the system pushes east, but overnight refreezing will keep mountain roads hazardous into Monday morning. If your schedule allows, hold off until Monday midday for the safest crossing. View the full article

  13. Bentley is exploring a limited-run off-road model while preparing its first electric vehicle and a next-generation Bentayga — a combination that reflects how significantly the British luxury brand's thinking has shifted in recent years. Speaking with Autoblog at the 2026 New York Auto Show, Bentley Americas CEO Mike Rocco outlined a strategy that looks quite different from the one the company was pursuing just a few years ago. "We're not on the same track that was announced four or five years ago, where we were going to be fully electrified by 2030," Rocco said. What's replaced it is something more nuanced: a lineup built around electrification, high-performance variants, and limited-production special models, with Bentley maintaining flexibility across all three rather than committing entirely to any one direction. Bentley Bentley Could Build A Limited-Run Off-Road ModelAs we reported in January, Bentley debuted the Bentayga X Concept at the FAT Ice Race in Zell am See, Austria — a heavily modified Bentayga Speed built to gauge interest in a more capable off-road variant. Based on the Bentayga Speed's twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 producing 641 horsepower, the concept rides 2.1 inches higher and sits 4.7 inches wider than the standard car, with forged 22-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, and around 12.2 inches of ground clearance. A roof rack, auxiliary lighting, and twin tow eyes completed the picture of something built to actually go places. Related: W12 is Dead, Long Live the V8: The New Bentayga Speed is Bentley's Fastest SUV Yet The response has been strong enough to keep the idea moving forward. Rocco made clear that dealer feedback had been unambiguous. "There's a lot of interest in it," he said, though he stopped short of confirming production. What's also clear is that if a production version does happen, it won't follow the same path as the Bentayga. Rather than a full model-line addition, Bentley is thinking small in volume and exclusive in character. "If we did it, it would probably be in the same vein as a Supersports with a limited run of production," Rocco explained. "It wouldn't be a full model — we would limit it." The implication is a collector-focused halo product, designed to extend the brand's image and demonstrate capability rather than contribute meaningfully to overall sales volume. Related: Bentley's Continental GT Supersports Is Rear-Drive Only, 657 HP, and the Lightest Bentley in 85 Years Bentley's First EV Arrives In 2027 — And It's Staying ElectricBentley's first electric vehicle is on a firm timeline, with a reveal planned for the second half of this year and sales beginning in 2027. The model — a smaller SUV positioned below the Bentayga and described internally as the Luxury Urban SUV — will ride on Volkswagen Group's PPE platform, the same architecture that underpins the Porsche Macan Electric and Audi Q6 e-tron. Prototypes are currently in testing. SH Proshots/Autoblog Bentley has made clear that the model will not spawn a combustion or plug-in hybrid variant — a contrast to some rivals that have pivoted back toward hybrid solutions in response to softening EV demand. For Bentley, the reasoning is partly strategic and partly technical, with the platform itself not designed to accommodate combustion power. The car is also positioned not as a replacement for existing models, but as an addition to the lineup aimed at attracting new customers. This will be a new Bentley that happens to be electric, aimed at buyers the brand doesn't currently reach. Rocco echoed that in New York: "We're not positioning it as an EV product — it's the next Bentley." The car will also introduce Bentley's next-generation design language, shaping the look of the brand going forward. On performance, the SUV is expected to deliver rapid charging capability and a balance of comfort and agility in line with Bentley's existing models. Bentley Next-Generation Bentayga Later This DecadeWhile attention is focused on the new EV, Bentley is also developing the next-generation Bentayga, though timing remains fluid. Rocco suggested it could come in around two years from now. Unlike the Luxury Urban SUV, the next Bentayga is expected to offer plug-in hybrid and internal combustion powertrains, keeping it accessible to buyers who aren't yet ready for a full switch to electric. Bentley is not expected to introduce a second EV before the end of the decade, meaning the new SUV will carry the brand's electric ambitions alone for several years. In the meantime, the company is also considering exclusive limited-run combustion-only models in response to continued demand for gas-powered cars — a signal that Bentley intends to serve that part of its audience rather than phase it out. Related: Bentley Marks 10 Years of the Bentayga With a New Special Edition Performance Remains Central To What Bentley IsRunning through all of this is a consistent emphasis on performance, which Bentley views as one of the clearest points of differentiation within the luxury segment. "We're the only luxury brand that can say we can do all of that — luxury, craftsmanship, bespoke, and performance," Rocco said. Recent models like the Supersports and Speed variants have reinforced that position, with demand proving strong. Adam Lynton/Autoblog View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article "The demand has been exceptional — the car is sold out," he noted. Performance-focused derivatives currently account for around 35 percent of Bentley's business when a full derivative strategy is in place, and the brand intends to lean further into that. "We want to shine a light on performance a bit more," Rocco said. Related: Bentley’s One-Off Travis Pastrana Supersports Looks Wild In Person Bentley View the full article
  14. Ron Capps got his hands on his first special diamond Wally for NHRA’s 75th anniversary season at the most recent race in Phoenix. As sweet as that was, there’s a chance for even more at this weekend’s Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip. Of course, there’s another diamond Wally on the line at one of NHRA’s most legendary races, but the weekend also marks the 1,000th Funny Car race in NHRA history. There’s another special trophy for that, as well as the opportunity to capture a remarkable milestone win during NHRA’s special anniversary season. Capps’ win in Phoenix gave the three-time Funny Car world champ 78 victories in his spectacular career – the most among active Funny Car drivers – but he never won one of the 100th race milestones. That could change this weekend in his 12,000-horsepower NAPA Auto Parts Toyota GR Supra and the magnitude of the weekend isn’t lost on Capps. “We’ve talked about celebrating 75 years of NHRA in 2026 for quite some time now, and I can’t think of a track with more legacy or that better signifies the history of our sport than Pomona, the birthplace of NHRA Drag Racing,” Capps said. “How cool that it lines up where this weekend is the 1,000th Funny Car race. I’ve been lucky enough to not only be a part of some of the big ones, but also to have had a front row seat to some incredible matchups over the years with some of the biggest names, including my former boss, Don “The Snake” Prudhomme. The Winternationals is one of the most historic events, so you really couldn’t have drawn it up better.” In 2025, Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Clay Millican (Top Fuel) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) claimed Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals wins. This year’s race will be broadcast on FS1, with elimination coverage on Sunday, April 12, beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET. It is the third of 20 races and the loaded weekend that includes two rounds of qualifying on Friday and Saturday, the Mission #2Fast2Tasty bonus race on Saturday and 75th anniversary celebrations like: An appearance from NHRA legend and six-time champion Kenny Bernstein, in honor of his historic 310-mph pass at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip in 1994. Other legends scheduled to appear include milestone Funny Car winners Larson, Gray, Wilkerson and Force, as well as legends like Prudhomme, Richard Tharp, Gary Beck, Jim Dunn and more. On Friday, the first 4,000 fans in attendance will receive a special NHRA 75th anniversary Winternationals event poster. If Capps does nab the 1,000th Funny Car race win, he’d prefer to do it with far less drama than it took in Phoenix. Capps’ car suffered a massive explosion during his second-round win and the team had a furious thrash to return in time for the semifinals. It all ended well, as Capps got past reigning Rookie of the Year Spencer Hyde in the final round, but back-to-back wins won’t be easy in the loaded category. Hyde moved up to second in points – one spot ahead of Capps – with Chad Green still in the points lead after his Gainesville win. Other standouts include four-time champ Matt Hagan, defending event winner Beckman, J.R. Todd, Cruz Pedregon, Alexis DeJoria and class newcomer Jordan Vandergriff. That level of competition makes the wins that much sweeter, especially during NHRA’s 75th anniversary season. “This is the coveted one right here,” Capps said of the special diamond Wally after winning in Phoenix. “You just think of the legacy and what’s gone into this. It’s unbelievable and thanks to Wally Parks, first of all. NHRA being around 75 years, it’s so awesome and at Ron Capps Motorsports, we’re just having a lot of fun right now.” Top Fuel’s Clay Millican is after his first win of the year – and a Pomona repeat – against points leader and reigning world champ Doug Kalitta, Phoenix winner Shawn Langdon, Tony Stewart, Leah Pruett, Antron Brown and Gainesville winner Josh Hart. Reigning world champ Dallas Glenn is coming off a win in Phoenix, taking on the likes of Anderson, Erica Enders, Aaron Stanfield and Gainesville winner Matt Hartford. All weekend, fans also get to see racing action in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. The Nitro Alley Stage is the main entertainment hub in the pits, hosting Nitro School, meet and greets, and much more. As always, fans get a pit pass to the most powerful and sensory-filled motorsports attraction on the planet. Fans can see their favorite teams in action and servicing their hot rods between rounds and get autographs from their favorite NHRA drivers. They can also visit NHRA’s Manufacturers Midway, where sponsors and race vendors create an exciting atmosphere. Race fans at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip can enjoy the special pre-race ceremonies that celebrate each of the drivers racing for the prestigious Wally on Sunday and includes the fan favorite SealMaster Track Walk. The final can’t-miss experience of any NHRA event is the winner’s circle celebration on Sunday after racing concludes, where fans are invited to congratulate the event winners. NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series qualifying features qualifying at 1:30 and 4 p.m. PT on Friday, April 10, and the final two rounds on Saturday, April 11 at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m. PT on Sunday, April 12. Television coverage includes eliminations on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET. To purchase tickets to the 2026 Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals, fans can visit www.NHRA.com/tickets. 15. Mazda’s Upmarket PushMazda once occupied a similar space to brands like Toyota and Hyundai, but a number of changes gradually gave the brand a more premium feel. The introduction of Kodo design on the CX-5 in 2012 was one of them, though Mazda still isn’t on the same level as luxury brands like Lexus. Still, the Japanese marque is reinforcing its market position with a survey exploring what consumers today consider “premium” in a car. The survey, which polled 1,000 U.S. vehicle owners who purchased a car within the past five years, suggests that more buyers now associate premium with intuitive in-car technology, design, safety, generous space, and practicality rather than the status signaling of a brand badge. Mazda Rethinking PremiumThe results bolster Mazda’s case, given that its lineup delivers a near-luxury feel without the premium pricing. Looking at the numbers, 93% of respondents said they would rather own a vehicle with “more of what matters” to them than a more expensive one. That “more” was most commonly defined as space and practicality (40%), value and quality (36%), and advanced technology and connectivity, driving enjoyment, and performance capability (30% each). On the other hand, 7% of respondents said “more” refers to status or social recognition, while 19% said a brand’s badge elevates a vehicle above others. While many would love to own a Mercedes-Benz or a Porsche, the survey suggests more buyers today are making more considered choices – looking beyond the badge and evaluating a vehicle’s specs rather than relying solely on brand reputation to determine its worth. Mazda leaned into that idea with a strong statement of its own, saying that “modern luxury is practical, purposeful, and deeply personal – not performative.” Mazda Mazda Draws the LineOther notable findings include 76% of respondents saying a premium markup is not worth it, while 83% believe a mainstream vehicle with a premium feel is the smarter luxury choice. In fact, even with an extra $75,000 to spend, more respondents said they would rather save the money for financial security, although 46% still said they would put it toward a high-end car. Some recent developments that support Mazda’s broader narrative include earning more 2026 Top Safety Pick+ awards than any other brand and winning the 2026 World Car Design of the Year award with the 6e (or EZ-6 in China), an electrified sedan considered as a successor to the Mazda6 that is not currently sold in the U.S. Mazda View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article
  16. Having joined the race to zero emissions, Mercedes-Benz, like other European carmakers, has committed itself to a fully electric future. As quickly as they all joined the race, though, it seems they are just as quickly easing themselves out of it. This is not because the environment is healing, but rather because even America’s best-selling EV manufacturer has dealerships full of unsold inventory. One could conclude, then, that while there is demand for EVs, the supply of EVs in the American market has already met this demand. For this reason, the new G-Class and S-Class, the latter of which will be in dealerships in 2027, have been confirmed as coming with the new V8 as well other ICE models, alongside EV variants of course due to the higher adoption rate of EVs in Europe and China, driven primarily by a policy push in the EU, and the Chinese Govt and auto industry’s investments into the EV Infrastructure respectively. Mercedes-Benz The New(ish) Mercedes-Benz V8Why has Mercedes announced a new V8 when it should be sending it off into the horizon? Simple, because its American customers are not ready to make the switch to EVs, and American sales make up over 15 percent of Mercedes sales across the globe. While China makes up for 30-35 percent of global sales, and its home market in Europe is committing to a fully electric future, Mercedes-AMG Board of Management Chairman, Michael Schiebe, says that the new flat-plane crank V8 engine continues to make sense for low-volume, high-performance vehicles. Mercedes has also announced a $7 billion investment into its Tuscaloosa, Alabama facility, aiming to produce core models such as the C-Class and E-Class here, primarily to minimize the loss in margins due to tariffs in one of their largest markets. Mercedes-Benz View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Are Big ICE Motors Making a Comeback? Mercedes-Benz Is this a larger signal from the industry? Can we expect to see big ICE motors making a comeback? Well, yes and no. Yes, it is a signal from the industry, consumers have conveyed their sentiment clearly - announcing that while firms were ready to only sell EVs, their customers weren’t ready to buy them. One could argue, though, that this new V8 could be the last hurrah of the Mercedes V8 meant to meet the upcoming revised European emissions regulations, and nothing more. However, Mercedes representatives have repeatedly hinted at ICE models being available well past 2030, as long as there is demand for them. Mercedes-Benz View the full article
  17. Stopping the BuckSince 2024, Mercedes-Benz has experienced a slow but steady decline in sales. It dipped by 4 percent that year and fell by another 9 percent in 2025. Not wanting to see those numbers reach double-digits, the company is changing its strategy yet again. The solution? Appeal to the masses by going for the 'mainstream premium' crowd. Granted, Mercedes-Benz was always mainstream, but according to Car Magazine, the company nearly abandoned the entry-level luxury market. Back in 2022, Mercedes-Benz aimed to increase profits by focusing more on the upper market and eventually discontinued its more affordable offerings. That plan had not panned out, hence, a change of direction. Mercedes-Benz Factors That Ate Up ProfitsMind you, Mercedes-Benz is still a profitable automaker, but the low-volume, high-profit strategy backfired on the brand due to various circumstances. It was hit the most last year with the announcement of the tariffs in key markets. The company ended up with a bill costing approximately €1 billion to cover that alone. Compounding the problem is China. As local automakers level up, legacy brands over there have suffered heavily. Mercedes-Benz's sales in China dropped by a worrying 19 percent as more Chinese models that offer a lot more car for a lot less money. Then there's the failed gamble of the early EQ electric models, along with the EV market's cooling in recent years. It had forced Mercedes-Benz to rethink its electrification strategy at high cost. With that in mind, Mercedes-Benz needs to sell more cars to make up for a tough 2025. Mercedes-Benz The GoalMercedes wants to return to 2019 sales levels. At that time, it sold 2.3 million vehicles worldwide, but in the last few years, figures have been below that. The company wants to, at the very least, be able to sell 2 million cars again within the next five years. It also wants margins up by 10 percent as part of its mid-term goals. The next-generation A-Class will be key to the brand's volume and profit strategy. It was supposed to be discontinued by the current generation's life cycle, but the company has committed to an all-new generation that will be revealed by 2028. The compact hatchback class is still huge in Europe, and the A-Class has (and still is) done well against the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series. The A-Class isn't the best-selling Mercedes-Benz model in Europe, but when you add up sales, it's still a vital model. Mercedes can also count on the heavily facelifted C-Class for the 2027 model year. It's been a consistently strong sales performer for over 30 years, and the release of the new model will be just in time as its rival from Munich prepares the next-gen 3 Series. Healthy profits are also to be expected from the S-Class, while the CLA and GLB should help boost sales volumes. The 2 million sales goal won't be easy amid the competition and other external factors, but the barrage of upcoming models came in at the right time. Mercedes-Benz View the full article
  18. If you're looking for a small sedan with raucous performance and a manual transmission, your choices are about to get slimmer. Orders for the Cadillac CT4 range, including the high-performance CT4-V Blackwing derivative, are set to close on April 20, according to GM Authority, leaving enthusiasts one less option and likely marking the end of an era, as no CT4 replacement has been announced. With the XT4 already gone, this means sub-$40,000 Caddies will cease to exist, but at least the CT4's bigger CT5 brother will live on, potentially bringing a new Camaro with it. CT4 Order Books Close Soon, Ending an Era Cadillac With the April 20 deadline for new CT4 orders looming (production will cease in June), all CT4 models will soon only be available as part of inventory or used, and though the Blackwing variant is doubtless the sorest loss, the entire range has been a capable alternative to German offerings. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and the base model powers the rear axle with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering 237 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Further up the range, a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-pot makes 310 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, while the CT4-V makes 325 hp and 380 lb-ft. At the top of the ladder, the CT4-V Blackwing comes with a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V8 with 472 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque. Related: Infiniti Confirms a Manual, Turbocharged Sports Sedan Is Coming: Here’s What It Could Look Like Impressive numbers aside, the CT4 range provides communicative steering, and with a choice between a six-speed manual or a 10-speed auto, anyone can enjoy its well-balanced chassis. With the CT4 disappearing, there will no longer be any American small luxury sedans to choose from, but that may change before long. American Sedans Are Ready to Make a Comeback Cadillac View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article With sedans starting to see something of a resurgence (Ford, Buick, and Chrysler have all talked about new sedans), Cadillac may yet revive the CT4 someday, but for now, its focus is on a new CT5. GM has confirmed that, while the CT5 will end production at the end of 2026, it will return for "a future model year," though when exactly is a mystery. On the one hand, the next Camaro will be built on the current CT5's Alpha platform, so this architecture still has life left in it, but on the other, would Cadillac be comfortable launching a "new" CT5 on old underpinnings? And would an entirely new platform be worth developing? All that remains to be seen, but if Ford, Chrysler, and Buick see success with their sedans, Cadillac may well dip a toe back into the CT4's segment before decade's end. View the full article
  19. $275K Can Go a Long WayAt $275,000, the EMC 620GE enters pricing territory that rivals flagship luxury SUVs. A brand-new Range Rover SV starts at a similar level, while a well-optioned Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 delivers far more technology, refinement, and everyday usability. On paper, this vintage military truck should not even be in the same conversation. Yet here it is, commanding the same money with none of the conventional benchmarks buyers expect at this price point. That disconnect is precisely what makes the EMC compelling. This is not a value-driven purchase. It is a statement piece rooted in heritage. Expedition Motor Company has taken a former Mercedes-Benz 250GD Wolf and rebuilt it with an obsessive focus on authenticity. The camouflage finish is not decorative. It is based on real field-applied military patterns, where no two trucks were ever identical. That attention to detail transforms the vehicle from a simple restoration into something closer to functional art. The $55K Engine Swap Pushes it Over The TopThe biggest departure from the original formula sits under the hood. The old OM602 diesel was built for durability, not speed. It produced just 84 horsepower and defined the Wolf as a slow, methodical off-roader. EMC replaces that with a 6.2-liter LS3 V8 producing 430 horsepower. The upgrade alone costs $55,000, which signals just how far this build has moved away from its utilitarian roots. Earlier EMC builds, including turbodiesel versions, leaned more toward preservation and came in at significantly lower price points. They retained more of the original character and offered a closer link to the Wolf’s military identity. This latest 620GE pushes the envelope further than anything before it. It is more powerful, more refined, and far more expensive. The philosophy has clearly shifted from restoration to full reinterpretation, with performance and exclusivity now taking priority. Expedition Motor Cars View the 5 images of this gallery on the original article Opulence Wrapped in FatiguesInside, the transformation is just as dramatic. The original Wolf was intentionally bare. It used simple materials and minimal equipment because it was designed for military use. EMC retains that straightforward layout but elevates every surface. Sweetgrass upholstery, detailed stitching, and European oak trim introduce a level of craftsmanship that belongs in a high-end luxury vehicle. This is where the 620GE becomes divisive. It no longer tries to balance heritage with usability. It leans fully into exclusivity. The result is a vehicle that feels less like a tool and more like a collectible. Some will see that as the natural evolution of the G-Wagen story. Others will argue it drifts too far from the raw simplicity that made the Wolf special. Either way, the price reflects that shift. This is no longer about capability or value. It is about owning something that exists purely because it can. 20. Ford rates the Mustang Dark Horse at 500 horsepower and 418 lb-ft of torque at the crank. That's the figure on the spec sheet, but crank horsepower is measured at the engine, before drivetrain losses to friction. What actually matters to the person behind the wheel is wheel horsepower, and that's where things usually get interesting. Based on typical drivetrain loss figures, most people expected the Dark Horse to land somewhere around 440 wheel horsepower. A reasonable assumption, and one that turned out to be only sort of right. Because the figures depend entirely on who was doing the measuring. Ford The Number on the Spec Sheet Isn't the Whole StoryRoad and Track took the same Dark Horse to four different chassis dynos across Southern California, keeping everything else consistent. Same 5.0-liter V8, same 91-octane fuel, same weather conditions, same SAE correction factor applied across the board. The results should have been close. They were not. Ford A Dynapack hub dyno at Bisimoto Engineering read 430.9 hp. A Dynojet at HK MotorSports came back with 425.7 hp. At the low end, Westech Performance Group's older SuperFlow unit recorded the weakest figures of the bunch. Then there was World Motorsports, whose newer AWD Mustang dyno topped out at 465 hp, nearly 44 hp more than the lowest reading. The shop openly acknowledged that its machine tends to read on the generous side. The spread across all four runs was significant enough that someone buying or selling a modified car could look at those numbers and reach completely different conclusions about what they were looking at. Why Dyno Numbers Are Best Used as BaselinesThe gap between machines is only part of the problem. Weather correction factors introduce another layer of variability that most people never consider. One technician demonstrated to Road and Track how four different correction settings applied to the exact same pull produced a spread of nearly 100 horsepower. Essentially, you can use different math on the same run and get wildly different numbers. This is why experienced tuners are largely indifferent to headline figures. Ford What they care about is running a baseline pull on a specific machine and then measuring gains on that same machine after modifications. A car that picks up 30 hp on the same dyno under the same conditions tells you something real. A random "dyno verified" sheet from a shop across the country tells you almost nothing in isolation. The next time someone quotes their wheel horsepower with total confidence, just remember the Dark Horse walked into four shops and came out with four different identities. View the full article
  21. The combination of an AMG badge and a small four-cylinder engine with a massive turbo and electric assistance hasn't been particularly well received by Mercedes fans, and according to a new report, the German automaker will be replacing the SL 43 with a new, straight-six-powered SL 53. Auto Motor und Sport reports that the M139 four-pot will be replaced by the M256 Evo mild-hybrid powertrain, with the entry-level AMG SL gaining a new name to signify its upgrade, but this change isn't purely because of customer feedback, rather taking place because the four-cylinder engine does not meet Euro 7 emissions regulations. Whatever the reason, expect the change to apply to the American market, too. More Power for Base SL, V8s Getting Tweaked Too Zac Palmer/Autoblog The current 2026 Mercedes-AMG SL 43 produces up to 416 horsepower from its 2.0-liter powertrain, and the report claims that the 3.0-liter setup will improve on that figure, churning out a respectable 449 hp. For the record, the current V8-powered SL 55 is not far ahead, producing 469 hp. Furthermore, while today's base AMG SL powers the rear wheels exclusively, the report says the SL 53 will send grunt to both axles, so the SL 53 will get quicker and move deeper into V8 performance territory. To keep the range balanced (and meet emissions), both the SL 55 and SL 63 will reportedly be tweaked, too. Related: Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach SL Roadsters Spied with Fresh New Looks Both the SL 55 and SL 63 will continue to use a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, but it'll be Mercedes' new flat-plane crank engine, and the former trim will reportedly produce 537 hp, while the latter will jump from 577 hp to 650 hp. The German publication offered no details on the range-topping SL 63 S E Performance, whose plug-in hybrid V8 currently makes a monstrous 805 hp, but we suspect this will see power gains, too. New Mercedes SL Models to Debut By Next Year Mercedes-Benz The report adds that these new SLs will arrive for the 2027 model year facelift, which means we should see them unveiled before the end of this year, and the bigger engine should please both enthusiasts and regulators. Even if the M139 four-cylinder could meet carbon emissions requirements, and even if customers approved of the setup, the engine is reportedly also too loud for Euro 7 noise limits, so sending it on its way is an easy decision. Still, this was a legendary motor, producing beyond 200 hp per liter in some applications and using a closed-deck design for greater strength, and while lovers of larger engines may be happy to see it go, Mercedes will no doubt use learnings from its time on the market to make future engines even more advanced. 23. All Senses EngagedThe roar of an internal combustion engine has been an intrinsic part of the driving experience until now. As the shift to electric mobility accelerates, engine noise is being replaced by near-silent performance, much to the dismay of enthusiasts. Toyota, however, believes that cars are to be experienced with all five senses, and is paying special attention to EV sound design in an effort to keep drivers engaged by engineering a complete sensory experience. Crafting Sound Without an EngineIn an effort to create a sound that matches each vehicle’s character while feeling authentic rather than artificial, Toyota’s engineers have taken to crafting acoustic profiles from the ground up. According to Shinichi Sano, assistant manager of Lexus’ Vehicle Performance Development Department No.1, who worked on sound design for the Toyota Mirai fuel-cell vehicle and the Lexus UX300e BEV, Toyota’s approach goes far beyond simply adding noise. Sano’s team conducted extensive sound tests in actual vehicles across various global markets to determine which frequencies would appeal to drivers, and which may be considered unpleasant or fatigue-inducing. Almost all the participants in these trials agreed that sounds at a frequency of 3kHz and higher were annoying, while sounds at 2kHz and under were deemed acceptable. As a result, only sounds below this mark were incorporated. Toyota Speed and SoundOne of the key objectives of the team behind Toyota’s EV sound engineering was to create an audio experience that allowed drivers to intuitively sense the vehicle’s speed, establishing clear communication between car and driver. To achieve this, three sound profiles were created based on the vehicle’s speed: a smooth and linear tone up to 50 mph that built up to a crescendo up to about 75 mph, above which the sound would level out, indicating that the vehicle was nearing its top speed. By layering these sound profiles together, engineers were able to simulate a natural sense of acceleration, much like that of a car with a traditional, internal combustion engine and transmission. Lexus Mythological InspirationToyota also experimented with different sounds for different vehicles, such as looking to Fujin, the wind god, for the Mirai, and engineering a whooshing sound for that car as it breathes in air and creates electricity from hydrogen and oxygen. The team also considered incorporating thunderous booms and crackles for the UX300e, inspired by the thunder god Raijin, but this did not make it past the prototype stage. Lexus The Sound of the FutureAs EVs take major strides in performance and refinement, Toyota is highlighting how sound can remain a core part of the driving experience, even without a traditional engine. By blending science, creativity, and cultural inspiration, the brand isn’t just replacing engine sounds but creating a new language for us to interact with our cars. View the full article

  25. Texas-based Hennessey has never been a stranger to speed, modifying and racing several cars and trucks since its inception in 1991, along with introducing an all-American hypercar. In celebration of its 35th anniversary in 2026, the company has revealed an ultra-limited take on the Ford Mustang GT with 70 percent more power, special graphics and badges, and some carbon fiber. This 35th Anniversary Super Venom will be limited to just 35 units, and further down the road, it will be joined by a new Hennessey hypercar. But more on that later. For now, let's focus on the Mustang-based monster. Hennessey Extracts 850 Horsepower from New Super Venom Hennessey View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article The 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine that finds a home under the hood of every Mustang GT has been supercharged to deliver a total of 850 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, the latter figure an increase of 55 percent. Along with the supercharger, this was achieved with the help of a new intake system, custom Hennessey Performance Engineering engine management recalibration, and tuning on both the dyno and the road, supported by a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty. Hennessey hasn't neglected the cosmetics, and for this 35th Anniversary variant, the Super Venom decals on the lower doors are joined by "91" decals on the hood and trunk, referencing the year of Hennessey's inception. Badging on the fenders and trunk, and under the hood, also helps make this Super Venom more special. Hennessey View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article To ensure this isn't confused as just another Mustang, the car gets a "VenomAero" carbon fiber body kit, comprising a lip spoiler, wing mirror caps, functional hood vent, functional fender louvers, side skirts, deck lid, and top-hung wing. This is complemented by 20-inch lightweight wheels, while the interior gains a dash plaque, branded floor mats, and redone upholstery with leather and Alcantara, as well as embossed seat backs. Specific pricing hasn't been revealed, but expect to pay over $150,000. If six-figure pricing doesn't even raise an eyebrow, read on... New Hennessey Hypercar in the Works Hennessey View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Over the last three and a half decades, Hennessey has continually pushed boundaries, and that is especially true of its Venom F5 hypercar. The company has produced several variants of this beast—F5, F5 Revolution, F5 Revolution Evolution, F5-M with a manual transmission, and the one-off F5 LF, which has both a manual and a simply breathtaking 2,031 hp—but there's still more coming, with company founder John Hennessey saying there's "a new Hennessey hypercar on the way." Frustratingly, little else was said, so this could be an all-new hypercar or yet another take on the F5 recipe first revealed in 2014. Whatever it is, it's sure to have ridiculous power and performance that can rival the best that Europe has to throw at it. We'll bring you more information as we get it. View the full article
