  5. Volkswagen’s new generation of electric vehicles is here and it all starts with this, the all-new ID. Polo subcompact hatchback. By using the well-established Polo name VW is hoping consumers will warm up to the new EV more easily, but if that doesn’t do the trick, the pricing most likely will. That’s because the ID. Polo will be the brand’s cheapest EV yet with a starting price of 24,995 euros (approximately $29,250) in Germany. Another reason to like the new ID. Polo is the new “Pure Positive” design language, which the new EV inaugurates. Highlights include the “friendly face” that’s almost identical to the ID.2all concept that previewed the ID. Polo in 2023, a dynamic profile with muscular wheel arches, hidden rear door handles and a C-pillar inspired by the first-generation Golf, and a sporty rear end featuring a horizontal light bar and a diffuser-like element integrated into the bumper. The Most Grown-Up VW ID Model Yet? Volkswagen View the 6 images of this gallery on the original article As far as the dimensions are concerned, the ID. Polo bridges the gap between the subcompact and compact hatchback segments. It’s 159.4 inches long, 71.5 in wide, and 60.2 in high, with a wheelbase of 102.3 in. Factor in the more efficient packaging enabled by the MEB+ dedicated EV platform, and the ID. Polo’s passenger space and cargo volume are comparable with a Golf rather than a Polo. For example, the trunk can accommodate 15.6 cubic feet with all seats in place—25% more than the current gas-powered Polo—or up to 43.8 cu-ft with the rear seats folded down. View the 6 images of this gallery on the original article Inside the cabin, the big news is the return of physical buttons and switches on the multifunction steering wheel and center console following significant customer backlash over the touch-sensitive sliders used in the ID.3, ID.4 and Mk8 Golf, as well as the over-reliance on touchscreen controls. The ID. Polo features a standard 10-inch Digital Cockpit and a 13-inch tablet-like center touchscreen powered by the new Innovision infotainment system. Another throwback to the Mk1 Golf is the “retro display” feature of the digital cluster which brings back the look and feel of the iconic model. The center screen features permanent shortcut buttons at the bottom for the climate control system and heated seats, some of which are doubled by physical switches placed under the central air vents. VW claims the controls are “clearly designed and ideally accessible.” Two Battery Choices Offering Up to 282 Miles of Range As Volkswagen’s first model based on the MEB+ platform, the ID. Polo brings a lot of improvements, including in terms of range, software and capability. The vehicle will be available with a single-motor FWD powertrain with three output levels: 114 hp, 133 hp and 208 hp. The entry-level and mid-range versions will feature a 37-kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery pack enabling a range of up to 204 miles (WLTP). The top version gets a bigger 52-kWh NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) battery that enables a range of up to 282 miles. Charging the smaller battery from 0 to 80% takes about 23 minutes at DC fast-charging stations, while the bigger pack takes 24 minutes. Volkswagen The MEB+ platform and new software also enable the ID. Polo to offer features like the optional Connected Travel Assist Level 2 semi-autonomous system with automatic traffic light recognition, which supports assisted longitudinal and lateral guidance and also reacts to traffic lights. Additionally, one-pedal driving comes standard, as does the bidirectional charging, more specifically a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function that turns the vehicle into a mobile power source (up to 3.6 kW) for devices such as e-bikes. New Equipment and Tech from Higher Segments Volkswagen View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article The ID. Polo will be offered in three trim levels—Trend, Life, and Style—with the entry-level one offering 90 kW DC fast-charging, Side Assist and Lane Assist systems, LED headlights, multifunction steering wheel, automatic air conditioning and more. The standard equipment becomes more sophisticated as you climb the trim ladder, with the Style trim offering features like IQ.Light LED Matrix headlights with LED light strip, 3D LED taillights, illuminated VW logos front and rear, and improved ID.Light interior LED light strip that provides visual cues for navigation, safety, and charging. Optional features include a 425-watt Harman Kardon sound system with 10 speakers and a subwoofer, a panoramic glass roof, a pneumatic massage function for the 12-way adjustable front seats, and the Park Assist Pro with remote control and memory function, among other goodies. Pre-sales of the VW ID. Polo have already begun today in Germany with the Life trim with 208 hp and 52 kWh battery, which is priced from 33,795 euros (about $39,500). The cheaper Trend trim will follow in the summer. Unfortunately, VW has no plans to bring the ID. Polo stateside. View the full article
  6. The NASCAR Cup Series television ratings for the race at Talladega Superspeedway were slightly down year-over-year. 7. Toyota builds everything from lightweight sports cars like the GR86 to everyday staples like the Camry. But at Field Style Tokyo 2026, the focus shifts away from flashy concepts like the Celica Sport and toward something more grounded. Instead of headline-grabbing show cars, its Land Cruiser Base division is bringing two one-off SUVs, both named "Urban Style," that explore how these icons can be reimagined for city life. Heritage Icon Reworked: Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Toyota The first concept taps into nostalgia. Finished in beige with paint-matched wheels, it keeps a clean, utilitarian look, while subtle black and grey side stripes nod to 1980s design cues. And it still looks every bit like a go-anywhere machine, especially with its chunky all-terrain tires. For American buyers, this one carries extra intrigue since variants like the 70 Series, including the closely related 79, are not sold in the United States. Modern, Moodier Take: Toyota Land Cruiser 250 Toyota The second concept moves in a different direction. Based on the Land Cruiser 250, also known as the Land Cruiser in the US and the Prado in other markets, it adopts a matte gray finish contrasted with gloss black elements along the roofline and trim. And dark-finished 20-inch wheels complete the look. With Toyota already indicating plans to extend flagship model life cycles to nine years, the 250 will likely stick around for some time. Concepts like this hint at how owners might personalize their SUVs over that longer lifespan. The Bigger Picture Toyota Toyota has not outlined any mechanical upgrades, and the interiors remain under wraps. And since neither model will be mass-produced, that suggests both builds are design studies. Even so, they serve a clear purpose. Toyota wants to remind you what the Land Cruiser Base department is capable of. Land Cruiser Base builds off-on exhibition cars like these, but also manufactures parts for discontinued Land Cruiser models and other customization parts. It forms part of the GR Heritage Parts program that manufactures parts for other older, beloved Toyota models, like the Mk4 Supra and AE86. View the full article
  8. Hyperscreens Are Here to StayFor those hoping that Mercedes-Benz would dial down the Hyperscreen over time, we have bad news for you. The German automaker is sticking to its guns when it comes to that matter, so don't expect simplified interiors from the brand any time soon, or ever. Autocar recently spoke to Mathias Geisen, Mercedes-Benz's head of sales and marketing, regarding the matter. If anything, it's set to double down on the whole thing, and we wouldn't be too surprised if we end up with glass cockpits instead of dashboards in the future. Mercedes-Benz What the Sales and Marketing Chief SaidAccording to the source article, the touchscreens will showcase their 'digital craftsmanship,' and that Mercedes-Benz's current sales and marketing chief is, indeed, a big fan of the screens. "I always refer to my phone: for the last 20 years it basically looks the same, but the magic happens behind the screen, and this is why we are big believers in those screens," said Geisen. It's a stark contrast to Volkswagen's approach to digitalization, further highlighting the crossroads that the German auto industry is facing at the moment. Geisen also said, "We [Mercedes-Benz] have the highest-craft machine in the interior, in look and feel and materials, but we make sure that this overall experience seamlessly blends into what you do on the digital side." He further added that these screens add a touch of personalization with the ability to change themes and wallpapers uploaded into the infotainment system, adding to the physical personal touches that one can put on the car, in this case, the C-Class EV. Mercedes-Benz ConsolationThat said, Mercedes-Benz isn't being deliberately obtuse; there are customer clinics that have requested bringing the buttons back, so the company did just that. Mind you, the company isn't giving us a whole heap of them, but at least some basic functions won't be buried in the massive touchscreens. In the case of the electric C-Class, there is a rocker switch and a scroll wheel on the steering wheel, but there are still a fair degree of capacitive touch panels on it. There is, however, a small row of buttons on the high-set center console, namely for the drive modes, exterior cameras, microphone, and another scroll wheel for volume. Expect the next generation of Mercedes-Benz models to adopt a layout similar to that of the new C-Class EV, as well as the CLA and GLB. The gas-fed (facelift) version of the C-Class is coming soon, and don't be shocked when you're greeted by a face full of screens. Mercedes-Benz View the full article
  9. Nitro Funny Car driver Spencer Hyde is set for a rare double-duty weekend at South Georgia Motorsports Park, competing in both his Jim Head Racing Nitro Funny Car and Stan Shelton’s ’67 Mustang Pro Mod in a substitute-driver role. It has been a long time – if ever – since a nitro driver has taken on two very different horses in the same weekend, but Hyde will do exactly that in Valdosta. From the raw power and precision of a Nitro Funny Car to the fierce, unpredictable world of Pro Mod racing, Hyde’s weekend is shaping up to be one of the most unique storylines in the pits. Hyde will step into Shelton’s Mustang after Shelton became unavailable due to a family obligation. For Shelton, the decision came down to confidence, composure, and proven Pro Mod experience. “Unfortunately, I’m not able to be behind the wheel this weekend, but I wanted to make sure the car was put in the right hands,” said Stan Shelton. “Team Shelton Motorsports has been working hard to continue improving our program in NHRA Pro Mod, and missing a race with one of our cars was not an option. We are thankful the class has a substitute-driver platform in place for situations like this. “Spencer is not just a talented driver; we consider him a friend and a fierce competitor. He brings a level of energy and enthusiasm that matches our team’s dynamic perfectly. He may drive a Nitro Funny Car, but he has Pro Mod blood running through his veins. “I would also like to thank Jim Head for allowing this opportunity to happen,” Shelton added. “We would like nothing more than to see Spencer double-fisting two Wallys on Sunday – one in Nitro Funny Car and one in Pro Mod.” Hyde’s double-duty effort will give fans at South Georgia Motorsports Park a unique opportunity to see one driver compete across two dramatically different platforms in the same weekend: a Nitro Funny Car and a Pro Mod ’67 Mustang. The Shelton team will continue working through its normal race-weekend program, with Hyde joining the effort as the substitute driver for the Valdosta event. Kevin Rivenbark will also wheel the team’s second entry, the ’71 Ford Mustang. Fans can catch Team Shelton Motorsports and NHRA Pro Mod in action this weekend at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Valdosta, Georgia. This story was originally published on April 29, 2026. 10. Loss of SteeringA vital part of driving is steering, so when an owner/driver experiences a loss of that ability, panic and safety ensue. There are multiple reasons a loss of steering might occur, ranging from a system issue to a software glitch. Tesla is no stranger to owner complaints about various issues pertaining to its cars. In the case of two unlucky 2023 Tesla Model Y owners, the issue arose from something far more alarming. According to these owners, their Model Y's steering wheel came completely off, leaving them without the erm... ability to steer. An Investigation was opened to get to the bottom of it, and it's now closed. Zac Palmer End-of-Production-Line RepairsThe NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) was the department responsible for determining what went wrong with these two cars. According to the report, two cars experienced the detachment of the steering wheel from the steering column while in motion. The initial investigation revealed that both cars were delivered to the owners without the retaining bolt used to secure the steering wheel to the steering column. ODI further found that the main cause of the failure in both 2023 Model Ys was end-of-production-line repairs (rectification) requiring removal and reinstallation of the steering wheel before release from the factory. Rectification is a production process done outside of the assembly line. Manufacturers often do this to repair any defects found prior to the vehicle's release from the factory. Since it happens outside of the production line, the standard quality control safeguards aren't used. This can lead to incorrect or incomplete repairs. Following the investigation's findings, ODI requested additional data on cars built in the same facilities and time period to assess just how widespread the issue is. This included production data, steering wheel detachment reports for all MY 2022 – 2023 Tesla models, the number of vehicles undergoing end-of-line steering wheel removals/reinstallations, information about Tesla’s procedures and process controls pertaining to this activity, and Tesla’s assessment of the alleged defect. Zac Palmer Isolated IssueAfter reviewing all the data provided by Tesla, the ODI has concluded its investigation of the specific issue. The report details the following: No additional related incidents have occurred in the subject's cars or other vehicles. The cars that suffered the issue were used for fewer than 400 miles, so any other new incidents should have occurred by now.Any rectified Model Ys built after January 2023 did not exhibit the same issues.Tesla has already applied better rectification protocols to address the previous errors. 11. Built on InnovationSaab was one of the most innovative automakers that didn’t survive to the present day. While the Swedish marque is often remembered for later models like the 9-3 and 9-5, it also helped pioneer the practical use of turbocharging in everyday cars. There were likely other projects that never made headlines, including one in which Saab developed a unique V8 engine. According to a report from The Autopian, General Motors shelved that powertrain in favor of its own V6 engine. It is unclear whether the scrapped V8 would have made Saab more appealing, especially since it was reportedly intended for the U.S. market, but it is still worth revisiting today, given that the brand was best known for inline-four engines. The Twin-Four ExperimentThe V8 project was intended for the Saab 9000 midsize luxury sedan in the 1980s, when the model was designed to help the brand gain traction in the U.S. market. The engine was created by joining two Saab inline-four engines into a single 4.0-liter V8 with a 90-degree layout dubbed “Twin Four.” No turbochargers were fitted due to packaging limitations, but output was reportedly around 230 horsepower, which was said to be enough for the chassis. General Motors stepped in in 1989, acquiring a 50% stake in Saab to form Saab Automobile AB. But instead of funding Saab’s V8 development, which was backed by 65,000 km (40,389 miles) of testing for the prototype car, GM chose to use its own powertrain. The 9000 received a 3.0-liter GM V6 for the 1995 model year, before the nameplate was succeeded by the 9-5 in 1997, though production ran until 1998. Saab The Turning PointGM took full control of Saab in 2000, but the company was hit hard by the 2008 financial crisis, forcing it to cut underperforming brands – a move that also led to the demise of Pontiac and Saturn. Saab was sold to Spyker Cars in 2010, but its attempted rescue later collapsed after GM blocked a deal with Chinese investors over concerns about its technology being shared with Chinese companies. The report stated that only five complete engines were built, with the sole Saab 9000 V8 prototype residing in the Uusikaupunki factory museum in Finland. It remains in running condition, but that is likely as far as the engine will ever go. Saab View the full article

  13. Hyundai has given its flagship sedan a fresh update, refining a nameplate many American buyers may not even realize still exists. Known today as the Grandeur and previously sold globally as the Azera, this full-size luxury sedan shares similar DNA with the Kia K8, and it targets the same segment as the Genesis G80, BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It may not be sold in the U.S. anymore, but it reminds us just how far Hyundai has come. The brand is even doubling down on design, recently bringing in Brad Arnold as Chief Designer for North America. 2027 Hyundai Grandeur Facelift: What’s New Hyundai This latest refresh arrives about three and a half years after the seventh-generation Grandeur first launched. Hyundai keeps its heritage-inspired look, with the thinner light elements and a longer front end giving it a sharper, more modern face, which Hyundai calls the "Shark Nose". Details like the C-pillar opera glass and frameless doors remain from the original 1986 model, helping the car stand out without losing its identity. There is also a new Artistic Burgundy color available to add a bit more flair. Step inside, and the cabin continues to focus on comfort. The wraparound layout feels lounge-like, with soft materials, ambient lighting, and rear seats that recline at the push of a button. It is clearly designed with passengers in mind, not just the driver. We're glad to see automakers still building big sedans like this in a world dominated by SUVs. 17-Inch Infotainment Screen and OTA Updates Hyundai Technology is where the biggest changes happen. The Grandeur now adopts Hyundai’s new 17-inch Pleos Connect infotainment system, powered by Android Automotive OS. This is part of a bigger push across the lineup, with models like the IONIQ 3 also getting the same system. While physical buttons remain, the large touchscreen is still central to how the car functions, handling functions like adjusting the air vents. A new sunroof has been added, which can switch between transparent and opaque by the press of a button, and the Artisan Burgundy color is available for interior finishes, too. Furthermore, the system supports better voice commands, built-in apps, and wider over-the-air updates. These updates now go beyond navigation, covering key systems like suspension, powertrain, and driver assistance tech. Features like Digital Key 2 and a fingerprint scanner add another layer of convenience, letting drivers unlock, start, and even pay for services like tolls and fuel via Hyundai Carpay without a traditional key. Luxurious Ride and Hybrid Power Hyundai Beyond the screens, Hyundai has not forgotten what matters in a luxury sedan. The Grandeur continues to offer a smooth ride thanks to features like electronically controlled suspension that reads the road ahead. Multiple powertrain options remain, including gasoline, hybrid, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) variants. While Hyundai is busy developing a new N engine for its performance cars, it clearly hasn't put luxury on the back burner. View the full article
  14. The premier gasser drag racing of the Southeast Gassers Association drives forward into the heart of Dixie for race two of 2026. It has been almost five years since the last SEGA championship race was contested in the state of Alabama. A first-ever visit to Holiday Raceway in Woodstock, AL, will host the SEGA action that is The Bama Brawl presented by Superior Performance Transmissions. The last SEGA visit to Alabama was at Lassiter Mountain Dragway. This time, Holiday Raceway will play host. It is a long-awaited inaugural event as the weather hindered visiting the location in 2025. Though the weather didn’t cooperate last year, Holiday Raceway itself fits nicely into the line-up of SEGA-visited tracks. The dragstrip has a history dating back to 1968 and is a family-owned and operated facility. With SEGA at Holiday Raceway, fans will be able to enjoy a nostalgic gasser holiday at the dragstrip. NASCAR had the Allisons, Bonnett, and Farmer making up their Alabama Gang. SEGA is no different, having its own Bama Bunch, who are some of the toughest and winningest competitors in gasser competition. Dean, Oden, and Rainwater are some of the fiercest and feared racers in SEGA with numerous championships to their credit. From Super Stock to A/Gas, in each SEGA championship category, Alabama is represented. The Bama Bunch intends to hold the line in their home state. The Bama Brawl for 2026 will ring the bell for action on Friday at 5:00 PM Central with a SEGA-only test and tune (gates open at 4 PM CT – $20 admission). Saturday has qualifying scheduled for 1:00 PM Central with championship eliminations to follow (gates open at 11 AM CT – $25 admission – $35 weekend pass). Southeast Gassers Association competition will go through heads-up eliminations to the point of crowned event champions during an authentic 1960s racing experience. 18. The slow start to the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season for Jack Beckman took a sharp turn in the right direction last Sunday with his runner-up finish in the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals and it’s the spark from that strong showing that the PEAK SQUAD will carry to South Georgia Motorsports Park on May 1-3 for the renewal of the NHRA Southern Nationals. “There’s only one first but, in many cases, we’ve had a whole bunch of ‘last’ races,” said Beckman. “But you know for a fact if you win the inaugural, that never changes. I won the inaugural race at zMAX Raceway in 2008. It’s an awesome trophy that can never be taken away. There’s only one first.” The 37-time NHRA Funny Car winner finished third in his second-round quad at zMAX Dragway near Charlotte, N.C. Dave Richards crossed the finish line second but was disqualified for his car making contact with the retaining wall before the finish line. That moved Beckman into the final round, where he had a 0.058 reaction time and ran 3.917 seconds at 329.50 mph to Ron Capps’ winning run of 3.905 seconds at 334.90 mph (0.054 reaction time). The final-round appearance extended to 19 the number of consecutive seasons Beckman has raced in at least one final round in every season he has competed in the Funny Car class beginning in 2006. Despite not taking the victory, the performance moved Beckman from 10th to eighth in the Funny Car point standings; 10 points behind Spencer Hyde in seventh place, 22 behind John Force Racing teammate Alexis DeJoria in sixth and 52 behind JFR teammate Jordan Vandergriff in fifth. The 2012 NHRA Funny Car World Champion’s runner-up finish last Sunday qualified the PEAK SQUAD to participate in this week’s Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge. The race-within-qualifying event will take place Saturday, May 2, at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. ET during the third and fourth rounds of Funny Car qualifying. In 13 previous NHRA Southern Nationals starts (2007-2019 at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga.), Beckman earned two wins (2009, 2011) a runner-up finish and No. 1 Qualifier in 2016, and an 18-11 overall round record. “We have our tracks specialist, Lanny Miglizzy. When he gets to a track, he’s probably been there 20 times or more so he usually starts off with the notes he had last year,” Beckman said. “But we don’t have notes on Valdosta so the great thing about that is it’s equal for everybody. We’re going to roll in to South Georgia and it’s gonna be new to all of us. For the first time in NHRA’s 75-year history, we have four national events on tracks that we have not raced NHRA national events on before so it’s going to be really interesting.” The NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series qualifying will feature two rounds at 3 and 5:30 p.m. ET on Friday, May 1, with the final two rounds Saturday, May 2, at 12:30 and 3 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled for 11 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 3. Television coverage includes qualifying on FS1 from 9:30-11 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 2, a second qualifying show Sunday, May 3, from 1-2 p.m. ET and eliminations from 7-10 p.m. ET. 19. Audi is slamming the door on the budget-conscious buyer. After a combined run of nearly 2.3 million vehicles, Audi has officially terminated production of the A1 hatchback and the Q2 compact crossover. This isn’t a temporary pause; it is a calculated execution, in the medieval sense, of the brand’s entry-level lineup, allowing them to funnel buyers toward higher margin models, while also freeing up assembly space for electrification. Audi As of April 2026, the last Q2 has rolled off the Ingolstadt assembly line, and A1 production has permanently ceased at the SEAT-operated facility in Martorell, Spain. Audi has explicitly confirmed that neither vehicle will receive an ICE successor. Stepping StonesHistorically, the A1 and Q2 served as the vital gateway drugs into the Audi ecosystem. They were massive volume drivers across the UK, Germany, and Italy. That said, volume does not equal margin. In a boardroom environment obsessed with funding the EV transition, building a sub-$35,000 internal combustion car simply doesn't yield the returns required to keep the bigwigs happy in Ingolstadt. For the everyday European consumer aspiring to a premium German badge, the financial floor has just been drastically raised. With the A1 and Q2 eliminated, the larger A3 hatchback and Q3 crossover now stand as Audi's cheapest combustion-powered models, commanding significantly higher starting prices. UK dealerships are actively attempting to clear the final remaining A1 and Q2 inventory, offering immediate discounts of £2,000 ($2,700) or more, but once the physical stock evaporates, the affordable Audi is gone. Audi The "Why"The factory floor space left behind dictates the brand's future. The Martorell plant is being entirely repurposed to manufacture the Volkswagen Group's upcoming wave of small electric vehicles, including the Cupra Raval and Skoda Epiq. Meanwhile, the Q2’s demise at Ingolstadt clears the runway for the all-electric A2 e-tron, slated to debut this fall. The A2 e-tron is expected to launch with a sub-€30,000 ($35,000) price tag, effectively stepping in as the new entry point in Audi's lineup. The takeaway for the automotive market is stark. The democratized, entry-level luxury car is officially dead. As legacy automakers navigate tightening emissions regulations and the mandated EU EV development push, they are ruthlessly abandoning the bottom of their lineups. If you want a premium badge on a budget, you are no longer the target demographic—you are collateral damage in the industry's pivot toward high-margin electrification. View the full article
  20. Leah Pruett has enjoyed a strong start to her return to the Top Fuel ranks and appears as close as ever to her first win of the 2026 season in the NHRA Mission Drag Racing Series. Heading to South Georgia Motorsports Park for this weekend’s NHRA Southern Nationals, Pruett is also one of a handful of drivers with experience at the new track on NHRA’s national-event circuit. She’s tested in a variety of cars at the facility and while none of those were in a Top Fuel dragster, there is some familiarity for Pruett at SGMP, which could bode well for the standout as she remains on the verge of her first win during NHRA’s 75th anniversary season. Pruett advanced to the final quad last weekend in Charlotte, finishing third, marking her second final round in the past three races. Add in a No. 1 qualifier from Pomona and Pruett, who is currently third in points, is feeling good in her 12,000-horsepower American Rebel Beer dragster for Tony Stewart Racing heading into this weekend’s SGMP debut. “This year, with my return to driving, I get to reestablish myself in front of everyone and every single eyeball,” Pruett said. “I feel that things are moving very well and in the right direction for me back in the car and working with the team again. This team can definitely battle for a championship like the past three years, with myself and Tony (Stewart) in the driver’s seat. I’m anxious to get to (South Georgia Motorsports Park) now. I got my Funny Car license there and tested Pro Mod and Factory Stock at that track.” This weekend’s NHRA Southern Nationals marks NHRA’s historic first visit to South Georgia Motorsports Park and the first of the four new facilities added to the 2026 NHRA season. The race will be broadcast on FS1, including eliminations coverage at 7 p.m. ET on Sunday. It is the fifth of 20 races during the 2026 season and this weekend will feature a host of 75th anniversary events, including: An appearance from NHRA legend and three-time Top Fuel world champion “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, as well as NHRA legend Darrell Gwynn. A celebration of Garlits’ historic career and his passion for innovation, engineering and advancing the sport of drag racing. On Friday, a free, limited-edition NHRA pennant will be given to the first 3,500 fans in attendance. A new-look Nitro Mall, special displays and more. Pruett brings a wave of momentum to the first back-to-back race of the season. She’ll be trying to slow down points leader and reigning world champ Doug Kalitta, who picked up his second win of the season last weekend in Charlotte. But he’s hardly the only standout in the category, as Pruett will also have to deal with the likes of Shawn Langdon, her husband, racing legend Tony Stewart, Justin Ashley, Clay Millican, Tony Schumacher and four-time champ Antron Brown. But after not racing the past two years, Pruett has jumped right back into the thick of things, performing at a high level right off the bat. That bodes well for the rest of the season as Pruett continues to get more and more comfortable in the seat again. “Our TSR team continues to show strength every single weekend,” Pruett said. “I have to sit back and take a look at my personal performance since Gainesville when we started the season. Then, there were slight improvements at Phoenix and Pomona. I have made the biggest gains (in Charlotte). I tried something new (last) weekend that I used a long time ago. It didn’t go as well as planned this time, but I have many benefits from the weekend for my reaction time toolbox. We are very happy with the car and we are No. 3 in points now.” Ron Capps is the Funny Car points leader, but he’ll be challenged by a loaded field that includes four-time world champ Matt Hagan, J.R. Todd, Gainesville winner Chad Green, Cruz Pedregon, Daniel Wilkerson and Spencer Hyde. Reigning Pro Stock champion Dallas Glenn currently leads the points over his KB Titan Racing teammate and six-time world champion Greg Anderson. The two have wins on the season, while Matt Hartford has two wins from Gainesville and Charlotte. Pro Stock Motorcycle reigning champ Richard Gadson leading the way after winning in Gainesville. Charlotte winner Gaige Herrea is second, while others to watch will be John Hall, Chase Van Sant, Jianna Evaristo and six-time world champ Matt Smith. The race festivities kick off at 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, with a “Rev & Rally” race weekend preparty and fanfest from Visit Valdosta at the Rainwater Conference Center. Fans can meet a host of their favorite NHRA drivers, enjoy live music, enter a free raffle with prizes including a pair of tickets to the NHRA Southern Nationals and much more. The NHRA Southern Nationals will also feature the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, as well as JBS Equipment NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by Elite Motorsports and the Summit Racing Equipment Jr. Drag Racing League Shootout. Race fans at South Georgia Motorsports Park can enjoy the special pre-race ceremonies that introduce each driver and includes the fan favorite SealMaster Track Walk. They are also invited to congratulate the event winners at the winner’s circle celebration on Sunday. As always, fans get a pit pass to the most powerful and sensory-filled motorsports attraction on the planet. Fans can see their favorite teams in action and servicing their cars, get autographs and more. They can also visit NHRA’s Manufacturers Midway, where sponsors and vendors create an exciting atmosphere. NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series qualifying will feature two rounds at 2 and 4:30 p.m. ET on Friday, May 1 and the final two rounds of qualifying on Saturday, May 2 at 12:30 and 3 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m. ET on Sunday, May 3. Television coverage includes qualifying on FS1 at 9:30 p.m. ET on Friday and 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, with eliminations action to follow at 7 p.m. To purchase tickets to the 2026 NHRA Southern Nationals, fans can visit www.NHRA.com/tickets. 21. Mercedes went in a new direction when it launched the current generation (R232) of the SL-Class in 2021. Far sportier in the way it looks and drives than what came before, all versions of the SL are designated as AMG models. This marked a distinct change in philosophy relative to the new SL’s predecessors, which were powerful but typically viewed as plush grand tourers. But Mercedes is working on a facelifted SL that will move closer to the iconic nameplate’s GT roots. At the same time, this change will better distinguish it from the fixed-roof AMG GT. Here’s everything we know. Related: Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach SL Roadsters Spied with Fresh New Looks A Softer SL-Class is Coming Mercedes-AMG According to Autocar, the facelifted SL-Class will be repositioned as a traditional grand tourer when it arrives next year. A high-ranking insider said the “overwhelmingly positive reaction to the comfort-focused Maybach SL” encouraged this change in direction for the regular SL. Mercedes-Benz has largely moved away from high-end, two-door GTs in recent years. The gorgeous CL-Class was replaced over a decade ago by the S-Class Coupe, but the latter has not received a successor. That left the SL-Class as the company’s last two-door luxury GT. The new R232 emerged as more of a driver-focused 911 rival, though, thanks to its lighter roof and AMG-only engines. Mercedes-AMG Besides revised chassis tuning, the facelifted R232 will also drop the four-cylinder turbo engine in the SL 43. Instead, a new 3.0-liter six-pot turbo producing around 449 horsepower will find its way into a new SL 53 model; many believe that no SL should have anything less than six cylinders. SL 55 and SL 63 models will continue, but they’ll receive a new V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, an engine also used in the 2027 S-Class. Peak power in the SL 63 will rise to as much as 650 hp, and mild hybrid technology will be found in all four variants. As for the SL 63 PHEV, that model may be discontinued. Design-wise, the refreshed SL will receive newly designed headlights and taillights. The interior will adopt the latest MB.OS operating system, and we may also see a move to the full-width screens equipped to other new Mercs. What It Means Mercedes-AMG The R232 is already a superb drop-top, but it may have moved too far away from the original SL ethos of comfort, refinement, and sheer luxury. Merc’s decision to reposition it is understandable, based on the existence of the sporty AMG GT—which will still satisfy the keener driver—and the positive response to the new SL Maybach. It’s a surprise to see such a big shift for a facelifted model, though. When it arrives next year, the refreshed SL will likely start at around $120,000, especially after the demise of the base SL 43. That’s expensive, but it’ll still be far more accessible than the Maybach SL, which kicks off at $224,900. Either way, we expect Mercedes loyalists to appreciate a return to what the SL has always done best: supreme comfort, luxury, and style. View the full article

  23. Suzuki may have had a change of heart (again) regarding the electrification of its quintessential, no-nonsense off-roader—the Jimny mini SUV. You may recall that in 2023, at the presentation of its product roadmap for Europe until 2030, Suzuki teased the launch of an electric off-roader that had the unmistakable boxy silhouette of a Jimny. At the time, the automaker projected a battery electric lineup consisting of five models, including the Jimny (see presentation slide below). Suzuki But then in late 2024, when Suzuki unveiled its first-ever production EV, the e-Vitara SUV, company president Toshihiro Suzuki said the Jimny would never be electric as the weight of the battery pack and electric motors would “ruin” one of the model’s signature qualities, namely lightness. Suzuki also said the Jimny must remain “true to itself,” something that would not be possible with an all-electric powertrain. Interestingly, Suzuki at the time ruled out any other form of electrification for the Jimny, including mild-hybrid, full hybrid or plug-in hybrid. Is This the Jimny EV Testing or a Facelifted Variant? Or None? Fast forward to 2026 and Suzuki appears to be doing a 180 again on the issue of the electric Jimny. A photo of a Jimny prototype undergoing testing in snowy conditions has surfaced online, and it may suggest Suzuki has started work on an all-electric Jimny. Mind you, there's a big question mark here, and that regards the authenticity of the photo. Assuming the photo is real, why is this test vehicle fully camouflaged? It could be because it hides a facelift or because it's a new variant, likely an all-electric one—just look at the closed-off front grille, which is one of the most common identifying marks of a battery electric model. CarSauce was among the first outlets to report on the spotting, and as it points out, the Jimny prototype appears to retain the ICE version’s solid front axle, suggesting the battery-powered Jimny could have the same hardcore off-road character as the gas-powered model. Obviously, that would be great news, as the Jimny should remain equally capable off the beaten track regardless of the powertrain it packs. Now, as you’ve probably noticed already, the prototype has a four-door body, which is only produced in India by Maruti Suzuki; it's also right-hand drive. Jimny EV Would Allow the Iconic Nameplate to Return to Europe Jacob Oliva/Autoblog Does this mean the Jimny EV will be an India-only model? Not necessarily, because the current Jimny four-door, often referred to as the Jimny XL, is also exported from India to various regions, including Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and Japan. More importantly, an electric Jimny would allow a return to Europe for the iconic nameplate, which was phased out from the region in mid-2025 after the remaining stock of Jimny two-seater commercial vehicles ran out. Back to the electric Jimny prototype, Suzuki hasn’t even confirmed the model let alone announce any powertrain details, but we have to assume that if it's indeed happening, a dual-motor AWD system should be a given. Jacob Oliva/Autoblog Suzuki offers a dual-motor AWD powertrain in the e-Vitara, but it’s unclear whether that one can be adapted to work in the Jimny EV, which must retain its rugged off-road capability, including low-speed control (i.e. low range gearing), wheel articulation and solid underbody protection. The cool thing about a Jimny EV would be that it would likely have more torque than the current gas-powered model, which would be great news for off-road driving since EVs deliver maximum torque instantly. The gas-powered Jimny only offers 96 pound-feet of torque from its naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Styling-wise, the only difference between the alleged Jimny EV prototype and the gas model besides the closed-off grille is the presence of horizontal LED DRLs, which hint at a revamped front end. We hope Suzuki won’t do anything too radical, though, as a Jimny must always remain instantly recognizable as a Jimny, electric or not. View the full article
  24. After an eventful event in Charlotte, past Funny Car world champion J.R. Todd and the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series travel to South Georgia Motorsports Park for the facility’s first NHRA national event for this weekend’s NHRA Southern Nationals. It’s the first back-to-back race of the year, and Todd and his DHL GR Supra Funny Car team continue to build momentum with two semifinal finishes this season, including last weekend in Charlotte. Todd advanced to the final quad, but it was a wild ride to get there, as he took an unexpected trip to the sand trap at the end of the track. The team went to the spare car in the final quad, but the primary car will return at SGMP and Todd feels confident the team is on the verge of a victory. “That was unfortunate,” said Todd. “We brought out our spare car for the final (in Charlotte). I feel like if we didn’t have that issue in the semis with the primary car, I really think that we had a really good shot at winning. But we’ll go out there in Georgia and try and get it done this weekend.” This weekend’s NHRA Southern Nationals marks NHRA’s historic first visit to South Georgia Motorsports Park and the first of the four new facilities added to the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season. It marks a memorable moment during NHRA’s 75th anniversary season and Todd knows being the first-ever winner at the facility during a milestone year would make for a special moment. “We don’t have any notes to go off of from there, but at the same time, it’d be nice to be the first Funny Car winner, since it’s the first time we’re competing there,” said Todd. “I’ve been there about 15 years ago to race a Pro Mod, but I’m looking forward to getting to a new venue and hopefully we draw on some new fans to the area.” Winners in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle will be the first to win the highly coveted NHRA 75th anniversary diamond Wally at SGMP, making it a must-see event for every fan. From two rounds of qualifying on Friday, the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge bonus race on Saturday – as well as two more rounds of qualifying – and eliminations on Sunday, it’s a jam-packed weekend at SGMP, bringing back the Southern Nationals name to the NHRA circuit. It’s the first of four visits to new facilities for NHRA in 2026 and this one will feature a host of 75th anniversary events, including: An appearance from NHRA legend and three-time Top Fuel world champion “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, as well as NHRA legend Darryl Gwynn. A celebration of Garlits’ historic career and his passion for innovation, engineering and advancing the sport of drag racing. On Friday, a free, limited-edition NHRA pennant will be given to the first 3,500 fans in attendance. A new-look Nitro Mall, special displays and 75th anniversary stage in Nitro Alley. A win won’t come easy, as Funny Car continues to be an ultra-competitive class. Three-time world champ Ron Capps has two wins on the season and is the points leader, while four-time champ Matt Hagan earned the historic 1,000th Funny Car race win in Pomona. Chad Green won at the season opener in Gainesville for the second consecutive year, while others to watch include back-to-back world champ Austin Prock, Cruz Pedregon and Daniel Wilkerson. With his semifinal finish in Charlotte, Todd and his team will be slated into this weekend’s Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge. He’ll rematch with Capps while Hagan will take on Jack Beckman, and Todd can sense the momentum his team continues to build this season. “The confidence is definitely high in our camp,” Todd said. “I feel like team morale has definitely changed this year with all the changes that we’ve made between the race cars, the tune-up, bringing Todd Smith back to work with (crew chief) Dickie Venables. Everybody’s outlook has changed and the results have shown that. “We’ve made the right changes and improvements to the team, so confidence, I’d say, is definitely high. I feel like this is the best race car that we’ve had in a long time, going back to probably 2018. With the way that it’s going up and down the track, the majority of the time with no issues, you feel good going into the busy part of the year.” Currently leading the Top Fuel division is reigning world champion Doug Kalitta, following his win in Charlotte. His teammate and Phoenix winner Shawn Langdon is second, while Leah Pruett is third after returning to full-time racing this season. Tony Stewart is fourth after his win in Pomona. Reigning Pro Stock champion Dallas Glenn currently leads the points over his KB Titan Racing teammate and six-time world champion Greg Anderson. The two have wins on the season, while Matt Hartford has two wins from Gainesville and Charlotte. Once again, this season is a battle between Vance & Hines teammates with reigning champion Richard Gadson leading the way after winning in Gainesville. Charlotte winner and two-time world champ Gaige Herrea is second. Others to watch will be John Hall, Chase Van Sant, and six-time world champion Matt Smith. The race festivities kick off at 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, with a “Rev & Rally” race weekend preparty and fanfest from Visit Valdosta at the Rainwater Conference Center. 25. The Price Is Right?EV sales have been stagnant as of late, while the current crisis in stable oil prices has prompted buyers to consider EVs, sales haven't really exploded just yet. Key indicators of the overall EV sales slump have mostly pointed to the cost of these vehicles. In fact, most argue that EVs are now cheaper than gasoline, but advise looking at secondhand options rather than brand-new ones. Given that price is a big factor for buyers, it would make sense to keep prices low to entice people into the EV lifestyle. Yet for 2026, Stellantis has decided to increase the price of the 2026 Fiat 500e. Fiat What's New? Not much...Mind you, this isn't just an outright price bump for the sake of it; Fiat did announce that for 2026, the 500e will enjoy a few additional features. According to the official press release from Stellantis, the 2026 model will be available in the United States starting this summer. One new addition to the 2026 500e is a colorway called Miami Sunset, which joins the already expansive and playful list of colors. Design-wise, the 2026 500e is the same, still looking like a sleek modern version of the brand's historic mini-car. Inside the 500e, the interior is the same as before, except for a body-colored dashboard on the Pop variant. If you go for an Icona, the dashboard is Pearl regardless of what exterior color you choose. Also available as an option for 2026 is a JBL sound system tuned by famous Opera singer Andrea Bocelli, which, according to them, enhances the "Made in Italy" feel, in addition to the better audio quality. As part of the announcement by Fiat, the 2024-2026 500e now adheres to the NACS charging port layout. This will give them access to V3 and V4 Tesla Superchargers via adapters available for purchase at Stellantis low-emission vehicle (LEV)-certified dealerships and on Mopar.com. Looking at it from a performance aspect also shows that there aren't any updates to the 500e's capabilities. It has a range of 149 miles, with the brand touting fast charging. Using an 85-kW public fast charger will add 31 miles of range in just 5 minutes of charging. Fiat Not Worth The Hefty Price BumpBefore the price bump, the Fiat 500e had starting prices of $32,500 for the Icona and $30,500 for the Inspi(RED). For the 2026 models, prices now start at $37,700 and $35,700 without destination fees. That's a $5,200 increase across the board. We honestly can't tell why, considering all they did was add a new color and give an option to pay more ($750) for a JBL sound system. The price increase is also a head-scratcher, given that sales of the 500e in the U.S. fell 91% in Q1 2026 compared to Q1 2025. Fiat View the full article
