  1. America’s most popular vehicles, the full-size pickup trucks from Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, may be banned from Europe in a move that has angered US carmakers. According to Financial Times, US automakers are accusing the European Union of planning to keep trucks like the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500 off European roads by enforcing new safety rules that would exempt them from the trade deal between the EU and the US. US Automakers Sold 7,000 Pickups and SUVs in Europe in 2024 Stellantis The US pickup issue threatens to throw a wrench in the trade deal, which has been finalized but hasn’t been ratified by the EU yet. The stakes may not seem high for the US, as its full-size trucks make up less than 0.1% of the European car market, but it appears to be a matter of principle. Under the trade agreement finalized last year, the US cut tariffs on European imports from 27.5% to 15% while the EU reduced its tariffs on US vehicles from 10% to zero. But the US pickup truck issue may threaten the trade deal, whose ratification has been delayed by the EU. “Right now Europe is in a better position than the US,” an unnamed executive at one Detroit carmaker told FT, referring to the fact that the EU secured lower tariffs and some US vehicles may not be included in the deal. The US ambassador to the EU, Andrew Puzder, told FT that EU plans to change safety rules could breach the spirit of the trade deal if they prevented some American vehicles from being sold in Europe. At the center of the dispute is the EU’s Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) scheme, which allows certain bespoke or rare models to be imported under less stringent standards. The loophole also applies to vehicles produced for other markets. US carmakers have taken advantage of that, selling around 7,000 SUVs and pickup trucks in Europe in 2024, according to European environmental campaign group Transport & Environment; more than 5,000 of those were Ram 1500 trucks. America's Large Pickups Deemed Unsafe for Other Road Users in Europe Stellantis But the EU is now planning to tighten the scheme, with US carmakers fearing that their large pickup trucks would no longer be allowed in Europe. They claim that the changes would go against the trade deal, under which the EU agreed to recognize American car standards, opening the door to more US-built vehicle imports. “You can’t have low tariffs and massive non-tariff trade barriers and claim you’ve got a functioning relationship,” ambassador Puzder told FT. According to the US auto executive, the US administration is aware that Europe is "dragging its feet on the trade agreement" while also looking at "restricting US products and limiting customer choice in Europe.” The American Automotive Policy Council, a lobby group for Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, in December urged the Trump administration to block the EU’s move to tighten the IVA rules. But the European Union is expected to launch the revised scheme in 2027 to close loopholes it said could allow unsafe cars on its roads. Since the EU-US trade deal was finalized in 2025, the Transport & Environment group has warned that allowing more “monster” US pickup trucks on European roads would put pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers at greater risk. “Ram bonnets are so high that children aged up to nine years old standing directly in front cannot be seen by the average driver,” the group noted. 3. Copycats Crowding the Off-Road SpaceJeep isn’t backing off as more brands flood the market with rugged styling cues seemingly taken from their vehicles. Instead, it is leaning further into its identity. Speaking to Australian media at the Easter Jeep Safari, Jeep Vice President of Exterior Design Vince Galante told Car Expert that the rise of copycat design cues is motivating the brand internally. He noted that elements once unique to Jeep are now everywhere, but that only reinforces what Jeep stands for. “I think everybody has gone rugged, like everybody has red or orange tow hooks,” Galante said. ND Adlen Not About Retro Styling AloneGalante further explained that authenticity is not about retro styling alone. It is about function and capability. A Jeep must perform off-road and serve as a tool first. He said this is what separates Jeep from vehicles that only imitate the look. The design team is focused on making vehicles more capable and more adaptable for owners. That approach keeps the brand grounded even as competition grows. He also acknowledged pressure from rivals like the Ford Bronco. Instead of reacting with drastic changes, Jeep is refining its formula. Icons such as the Jeep Wrangler will evolve carefully. Any major shift will be tied to real improvements in performance or usability. Copycat Culture and China’s Growing InfluenceApart from other legacy brands, China has a long history of drawing direct inspiration from global automotive design, including Jeep. Vehicles resembling icons like the Land Rover Defender have appeared at lower price points. Models such as the Landwind X7 show how closely some manufacturers have followed established designs. Despite legal challenges, fighting these alleged infringement has been like a game of whack-a-mole. At the same time, China is becoming one of the largest automotive markets in the world. Its scale influences global trends. Many domestic brands are now evolving beyond imitation. They combine familiar styling with new technology and competitive pricing. For brands like Jeep, the response is not to chase every copy. It is to strengthen what makes them original. Jeep As a CultureJeep refuses to dilute its identity to stand out. It doubles down on capability and authenticity. Copycats only validate the brand's formula. Real advantages remain engineering, off-road performance, and heritage. Buyers are more informed and more critical, and they demand substance, not just style. Jeep’s focus on function keeps it credible and competitive in a crowded segment. There is also a strong community factor. Jeep owners actively modify and personalize their vehicles. That culture feeds back into product development. It keeps the brand connected to real-world use. By embracing both praise and criticism, Jeep maintains relevance while staying true to its roots. View the full article
  4. The Chevrolet Malibu reached the end of the line last year, but the now-discontinued affordable midsize sedan isn't out of GM's hair just yet. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, General Motors is recalling the Malibu because of a common problem: its rearview camera doesn't work properly. The problem affects 2023-2025 models, impacting some 271,770 examples of the sedan that were built between May 26, 2022, and July 18, 2024. Unlike several similar rearview camera failures across the industry in recent months, this problem can't be fixed with a simple software update, so owners will need to go into a Chevy dealer to get a replacement. Bad Glue Caused Chevy Malibu Camera Glitches Chevrolet According to the NHTSA's recall report, GM supplier Sharp Electronics discovered that the bonding process used to assemble the camera housing is at fault after a six-month review of field complaints received by GM found that some rearview camera systems were displaying a blank or distorted image. Specifically, GM's investigation determined that "the mounting configuration of the Sharp camera on the Chevrolet Malibu could expose it to moisture that may breach an insufficient housing bond." Basically, water could get into the rearview camera housing, and that may lead to the display issues noted in the recall. Related: 3 Vehicle Shootout: 2026 Nissan Leaf vs Volvo EX30 vs 2027 Chevrolet Bolt - I've Driven Them All GM reviewed field complaints every six months, but the problem has been noted since at least November 2022, so it's existed since the final-generation Malibu first started arriving with customers, with very few exceptions. Essentially, every Malibu could suffer from this problem, though GM estimates that only six percent of the production population has been impacted. The most recent example (MY2025) is the least affected, with just 42,309 vehicles in the recall, while the 2024 names 114,706 vehicles, and the 2023 names 114,755. New Rearview Cameras for Malibu Owners Chevrolet The solution, as we noted in the introduction, is for dealers to replace the rearview camera altogether, and dealers have already been notified of the recall. Unfortunately, it seems that it will take some time to get everything they need to service customers, as this is a phased recall, and customers will only be notified of the remedy on May 18. In the meantime, owners can search their VINs on nhtsa.gov to see if their Malibu falls under this campaign. This isn't the only recall the Malibu has faced in recent months; in November, the Malibu was recalled for a failing turbocharger that could, unsurprisingly, put the car into limp mode. With the Malibu now gone, affordable sedans in America are rarer than ever, but both Chrysler and Ford have hinted at reentering this area of the market. View the full article

  10. True EnthusiastAny true Petrol Head will claim that any involvement with the car is part of the lifestyle. Car guys like to fettle and tinker with their vehicles, getting to know them in depth, including their quirks and features. This is admittedly easier to do with older vehicles; the lack of technology and simpler engines lead to DIY moments. Modern cars are built differently and often require specialists for repairs and tuning (unless absolutely necessary), but sometimes rare opportunities to add a personal touch to your new car come along. Build Your Own Mercedes-AMG EngineTwo very lucky owners, Andrew from Australia and Johannes from the Netherlands, were invited to take part in a special process. Mercedes-Benz has invited them to the Affalterbach plant to help build the engines that will be placed in their upcoming new cars. This is part of an exclusive offer to owners who've signed up for the AMG Private Lounge membership, an exclusive online group of AMG owners and enthusiasts. The AMG Private lounge offers exclusive content, news, and special event invitations. Members also have access to special merchandise and to AMG experts called the AMG Allstars. When it comes to the build-your-own-engine program, it's available to people buying high-performance models such as the AMG GT or SL 63. As we know, Mercedes-Benz AMG engines are known for the "one man, one engine" policy, in which one engine expert will sign the plaque on the engine cover after completion. This gives owners an idea of who built their specific motor, and both these lucky owners will be able to not only meet the builder but also give them a helping hand under the watchful eyes, of course. AMG builds around 20,000 engines a year, under the guidance and expert hands of just 50 AMG master engine builders. Mercedes-Benz/YouTube View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Involving the CustomerApparently, Mercedes-Benz AMG isn't the only one offering a similar experience. General Motors does the same for Corvette buyers at a sum of $5,000. It's a returning program for 2026 commemorating the launch of the ZR1 Corvette. Ferrari also offers a program that invites owners to visit Maranello to watch the build, but not to partake. Some boutique restomodders also give owners a chance to build their cars, such as Zeigler/Bailey, an Australian-based 911 restomod company. Zeigler/Bailey says this process allows owners to build a more in-depth relationship and understanding of the car-building process. 12. Better than a BYD Blade Geely has a new battery technology that charges faster than BYD's Blade 2.0, and it's called the "Energee Golden Brick." A new kind of race has been brewing lately, and it's not happening at a race track, but at charging stations. Automakers have been quite showy about how fast their cars can power up, with BYD leading the charge – pun intended. As reported by Car News China, Lynk and Co, a brand under the Geely group, claims that its 95 kWh battery pack can charge from 10 to 70% in just 4 minutes and 22 seconds, which is about 38 seconds faster than BYD's Flash Charging standard, which takes five minutes to achieve the same result. It looks like we have a new leader in the space of "fastest to charge." BYD The Golden Brick From 10 to 80%, Geely's 900V Energee Golden Brick gets through that in just five minutes and 32 seconds. From 10% to 97%, Geely's EV took only 8 minutes and 42 seconds. In comparison, BYD's 10 to 97 test yielded about 9 minutes of charge time. Bottom line is, Geely's is faster. The hardware is what makes this speed possible. Geely's peak power is 1,100 kW, achieved at low battery power levels. The system can "ramp down" (if you could even call it that) to about 500 kW when the battery reaches 75%, and 350 kW when the vehicle reaches 97%. Even at 97%, the charger's output is similar to some faster chargers at their peak. Keeping temperatures in check in the system requires a full liquid-cooling system. Heat is the number one cause of battery degradation in pretty much anything with a power cell, honestly, so keeping that cool is part of the challenge of faster and faster charging. Lynk and Co There's a Catch For now, the best that Geely gets out of this technology is bragging rights. It's no use to you and me if we can't find the appropriate charger. That's the problem that Geely might face with this particular technology. While reverse compatibility shouldn't be an issue, it's getting to a station with the ultra-fast charging standard ready to use. Geely's been slower to roll out these next-generation stations. BYD has already installed its 5,000th megawatt Flash Charging station and expects to roll out another 20,000 stations by year-end to ensure that the new charging standard will be utilized by its consumers. On the other hand, the Geely group's ultra-fast charging network is about a quarter of BYD's. For now, Geely may claim bragging rights, but if the company can't expand its network fast enough, maybe BYD will still be the last to laugh. Consumers Win and Lose at the Same Time While faster and faster charging speeds are good if you're in a pinch, long term battery performance, safety, and longevity becomes a concern. Fast charging puts an immense strain on battery chemistry and fast charging is ideally only used when it is absolutely necessary. As the largest EV battery producing country in the world, Chinese automakers are really pushing the boundaries of battery technology. Geely's going to fight an uphill battle to get its new charging standard out, and that means new cars that are capable of 1,100 kW charging and setting up charging stations for customers to take advantage of. It may take a while longer for Geely to accomplish its goal. In that time, BYD's current megawatt standard would have already pulled ahead in terms of adoption. In the end, the bigger question is: Does the consumer win? Only time will tell, and only if the charging standard can guarantee safety. Should EV makers continue to push charging speeds closer and closer to fuel-fill up speeds? I think we could hit a wall very soon, and I hope that doesn't involve a few literal press fire. 13. Big PowerThere was a time not long ago when manufacturers were one-upping each other in power. It seemed like every new model would offer a performance variant that trumps the competition. Those days have slowly faded as the market shifts toward a more fuel-efficient focus, but there are still dedicated models that will keep the power-hungry enthusiast happy. You wouldn't think of big SUVs as prime candidates for performance upgrades, but surprisingly, this segment still soldiers on with the likes of the Cadillac Escalade V, Range Rover V8, and more. Infiniti apparently wants to join in. Infiniti 700-hp Infiniti QX80Speaking to The Drive, Nissan and Infiniti's Senior VP of U.S. Marketing and Sales, Tiago Castro, said the brand would ideally like to offer a 700-horsepower version of the flagship SUV QX80, but timing would be the deciding factor. Castro himself is a proclaimed enthusiast, with his first car being a manual Infiniti G35. He points out that Cadillac is currently struggling to build Escalade V models fast enough to meet the demand. This, he believes, is the key indicator that the market wants a big, powerful SUV. The Escalade is a beast of a car with a supercharged V8 that makes 682 hp, which could be Castro's barometer for the 700 hp claim on the QX80. Castro also said that Infiniti is working behind the scenes to reintroduce a dedicated performance line, firmly stating that the brand will connect well with buyers through the performance cars. The QX80 is just one of the many they are considering for future power upgrades. Just a month ago, it was reported that the automaker was working on a QX80 Red Sport with 600 hp. Also in the works is a Red Sport sedan with a manual transmission. Infiniti Careful PlanningAs optimistic as the executive is, he also notes that the internal discussion is whether it would be better to go for a 700 hp model or if the planned 600 hp is enough. It seems that his key consideration factor revolves around demand, and he sees the Red Sport as something that would right now have the demand. Given his acknowledgment of the high Escalade V sales, Castro might just use that as his main push to finally get the performance line flowing into dealerships sooner rather than later. 14. CircumstancesThe past few years have been tough for the EV industry; some of the causes stem from the removal of government incentives, leading to a gradual decline in sales and to major EV plans being paused or, in some cases, stopped altogether. An unforeseen event has somewhat tipped the scales back in favor of EV mobility. Circumstances dictated by the sudden, sharp rise in fuel prices brought about by the Middle East conflict are prompting people to crunch the numbers. Mostafa Bassim/Anadolu via Getty Images EVs are the Economic Choice?A report byAutomotive News cites a study by Coltura, a Seattle-based non-profit group. This analysis considers the current factors affecting gas prices, since prices have surged by more than 30 percent since February, with the national average rising from $3.41 in March to $4.14 in April. According to Coltura, people who switch from gasoline to EVs can save as much as $1,805 per year on fuel and maintenance. Going further, Coltura says these prices will remain high and volatile due to disruptions to safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, which is considered one of the world's most vital oil routes. The policy director at Coltura, Rob Sargent, said that to get the $1,805 savings, they accounted for the fact that the average U.S. driver accumulates 15,000 miles a year. Interestingly, the more you drive, the more you save, computing someone who does 25,000 miles rendered assumed savings of $3,008 a year. In fact, there is even a free calculator by Coltura that you can use to simulate some of the savings. In it, you can enter vital data to inform your thinking about EV savings versus gasoline. It'll ask you for your average yearly miles, how much you spend on fuel, and even car payments. Kia Used Is the Way To GoA key factor deterring people from buying EVs is also the high prices they usually command. Sargent admits that a large portion of the population can't afford brand-new EVs, but is quick to point out that there are many affordable used options available to everyone. Sargent also says that further ignoring the EV shift could be bad for the U.S. economy and could lead to a future in which all Americans have no choice but to overpay for fuel. The Trump administration has dealt some vital blows to the EV industry, repealing the $7,500 tax credit and even suing California for its own emissions standards that go against the administration's policy. 16. No Top Safety Pick for MinivansConsidering that minivans are geared towards families, it's rather shocking to learn that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety didn't include a single one on its Top Safety Pick roster. There were affordable compacts in the list, as well as SUVs of varying shapes and sizes, but family shuttles were noticeably absent. So, what gives? Following the Institute's new, tougher testing guidelines for moderate overlap crashes, all the minivans it tested simply didn't cut the mustard in terms of rear-occupant protection. More shockingly, none of the models even earned an Acceptable grade for protecting rear passengers. Toyota "It's Disappointing," Says IIHS"It's disappointing that minivans continue to struggle to provide the best available protection for passengers in the back, considering that these are supposed to be family vehicles," said David Harkey, the current president of the IIHS. The models tested were the Chrysler Pacifica, Honda Odyssey, Kia Carnival, and Toyota Sienna. The Pacifica, Carnival, and Sienna received a rating of Marginal, while the Odyssey scored Poor in the new moderate overlap test. It's the very reason none of these vans even came close to earning a Top Safety Pick award from the Institute. Honda High Injury IndexesDuring the tests, it was observed that there were elevated head/neck and chest injury risks for rear-seat passengers. The dummies measured forces high enough to cause concern for the IIHS. For the Carnival, it only offered marginal protection to the head/neck and chest, while the Pacifica did not provide adequate protection to the chest, and the side airbags failed to deploy. For the Odyssey, there were exceedingly high forces on the dummy's head and neck, hence the Poor score. While the dummies in the Sienna didn't actually record extreme forces, there was a high risk of 'submarining' wherein the seatbelt slides up into a passenger's abdomen, increasing the likelihood of injury. The structure of the vans isn't the problem; rather, excessive forces from the seatbelt tensioners, as well as poor positioning of the seatbelts, are. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/16kdsb6lYS4 Improvements Coming Soon? It's safe to say that the manufacturers of these minivans will be finding ways to improve the outcome soon. That said, it's not totally bad news, as all received a rating of Good in the small overlap crash test, while the Sienna and Odyssey fared well in side impact testing. But the point that IIHS is driving home is that these cars can't be safe in just one or two aspects; it has to be the whole package. Either way, it's in everyone's best interest to address the root of the problem, and hopefully the changes have been applied since the release of the test results. 21. The first quarter of 2026 was a really bad one for Stellantis EV sales in the United States amid the EV retreat in the market. Electric vehicle sales declined across the board particularly after the third quarter of 2025 when the EV federal tax credit was axed, and the trend continued in Q1 this year, with Stellantis seeing some dramatic declines. While the report notes that the automaker’s overall sales rose 4% over the first quarter of 2025, the Dodge Charger Daytona, Jeep Wagoneer S and Fiat 500e EVs saw massive year-over-year declines that neared 100% for each of the three models. Dodge Charger ICE Vs EV: It's Not Even a Contest Dodge Starting with the Dodge Charger, Q1 2026 provided a good opportunity to see how customers react when faced with the choice of a gas engine and a battery-electric powertrain for the same model. Buyers overwhelmingly went for the gas-powered Dodge Charger, which outsold its all-electric sibling 7 to 1. Dodge sold 1,672 six-cylinder Chargers compared to 240 Charger BEVs, with sales of the all-electric muscle car dropping 88 percent from 1,947 units in the first quarter of 2025. That said, it’s worth pointing out that combined sales of the gas-powered Charger 4-Door and 2-Door—1,672 units in Q1 2026—are still very low compared to the previous generation Charger sedan and Challenger coupe, which exceeded a combined 20,000 units in Q1 2024 even after production of both models ended in December 2023. Jeep Wagoneer S and Fiat 500e Sales Dropped 93% and 85% in Q1 2026 Chase Bierenkoven Moving on to the Jeep brand, the Wagoneer S midsize electric SUV had a rough first quarter as well, with sales plunging 93% to 175 units, down from 2,595 in Q1 2025. Of the entire Stellantis USA lineup, only Fiat 500e sales were lower—excluding “zombie” models like the Jeep Renegade, Dodge Challenger and Fiat 500X, which appear in the Q1 sales report after sitting on dealer lots for months or even years. The Wagoneer S has received mixed reviews so far, with the buggy software, questionable build quality, and high pricing—it starts at over $65,000—being frequently cited as downsides, while the performance, sleek styling and luxurious interior are generally appreciated. The abysmal Wagoneer S sales spells bad news for Jeep, which is getting ready to welcome its second EV to the lineup this spring, the Recon off-roader. Fiat Finally, the Fiat 500e is another Stellantis EV that flopped in Q1 2026, with sales collapsing 85% to 68 units, down from 448 units year-over-year. The electric city car is suffering in the US not only because of the overall EV downturn but also because it has a limited range of 149 miles and it's too expensive. The 2025 Fiat 500e starts at $30,500 (excluding $1,995 destination), which is simply too much for a car this small. The 2027 Chevy Bolt and 2026 Nissan Leaf are significantly bigger and more practical cars that offer more range while costing less than the Fiat. View the full article
  22. Speed Has Its LimitsThe Chevrolet C8 Corvette ZR1 is undeniably one of the most extreme Corvettes ever built, with 1,064 horsepower on tap. But like any high-performance car, it still has to be kept in check on public roads. One NBA player learned that the hard way after allegedly being caught speeding in a white Corvette ZR1 at more than 100 mph. According to Action News 5, Brandon Clarke, the Memphis Grizzlies’ No. 15 power forward, was arrested last week in Cross County, Arkansas. He reportedly initially refused to pull over, and the pursuit ended only after a second deputy joined. To make matters worse, officers allegedly found more than 200 grams of kratom – classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in the state – along with a THC vape pen that tested positive for marijuana. Chevrolet Not Your Average CorvetteIn general, the Corvette ZR1 would not be an easy car to go after. With a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 producing more than 1,000 horsepower, it can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.3 seconds when equipped with the ZTK Performance Package. It also has a top speed of 233 mph, though that is, of course, all but unusable on public roads. As a result of his actions, Clarke was charged with improper passing, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing/exceeding the speed limit, and trafficking a controlled substance. Clarke was released on a $25,000 bond, but he will not return for the remainder of the 2025–26 season. The Grizzlies forward has been recovering from a right calf sprain, and recent evaluations reportedly showed he still needs more time to heal before being cleared for high-intensity court work. He is, however, expected to return next season. The team missed the playoffs this year after securing the eighth seed the previous season. Chevrolet The Cost of Going FastThe Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is often seen as a value supercar thanks to its price-to-performance ratio, making it a compelling alternative to models like the Ferrari 296 GTB, though it remains far from affordable. It starts at $185,000 and sits below the ZR1X, which adds a hybrid setup and an all-wheel-drive system to produce 1,250 horsepower. Production takes place at General Motors’ Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky, alongside other Corvette variants, including the entry-level Corvette Stingray. 24. An Icon May Be RewrittenA report from GM Authority states that General Motors has approved a replacement for the Chevrolet Camaro. Few details have been disclosed, but the next-generation model is reportedly expected to ride on the Alpha platform, which also underpins the Cadillac CT5 and other rear-drive sedans. With that said, the Camaro, if the reports are accurate, would enter its seventh generation and likely avoid returning as a crossover, a body type some may expect, given the strong demand for crossovers and SUVs. The reported use of GM’s Alpha platform also suggests the revived nameplate is unlikely to go fully electric, unlike the EV version of its longtime archrival, the Dodge Charger. Chevrolet Built on Familiar GroundThis topic emerged amid GM’s plans to utilize its Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan, which currently builds the CT5 and the outgoing CT4. The facility is also reportedly set to produce an upcoming Buick sedan, expanding a lineup that is currently limited to crossovers, including the Envision. Given relatively weak demand for sedans in the U.S. – enough to push brands like Ford to largely exit the segment – the annual production of the Buick sedan could reportedly be capped at between 10,000 and 20,000 units, according to Automotive News. As for the Camaro, production is expected to begin at the Lansing plant in fall 2027 alongside the next-generation CT5. GM will reportedly build between 60,000 and 70,000 units of the CT5 and Camaro annually. If that holds, it would mark the Camaro’s return to the market after its 2024 discontinuation, which came amid several factors, including GM’s EV pivot – an approach that, over time, has not fully played out as expected. Chevrolet A Plot Twist May Be LoomingA Camaro retaining a performance-focused powertrain would offer a more affordable option for enthusiasts who may not be willing to spend $70,000 on a C8 Corvette. However, GM Authority noted that the replacement “might not be exactly what you would expect.” While nothing is official yet, the return of combustion-powered models appears to reflect a broader shift in the industry, as seen in the revival of the Hemi V8 for the Ram 1500 TRX. That shift also comes as the current administration has moved to ease federal emissions and fuel-economy rules, creating friendlier conditions for combustion cars.
