Big rpm, big burnouts, wheelstands, gear banging shifts, and heads up racing action make this series something truly special. Lucky for you, our friend Tommy Lee Byrd, aka the Hot Rod Hoarder, was on hand and shooting video because he got some really special stuff. Video Description: The Southeast Gassers 2026 season opener at Shadyside Dragway brought a FULL DAY of gasser action. The historic drag strip in Shelby, North Carolina has served as the home of the Southeast Gassers Association for quite a few years, and it’s a great setting for such an iconic drag racing championship series. The 2026 season opener saw some changes in the lineup of cars, including the RETURN of Greg Porter’s Night Stalker ’55 Chevy, sporting a new Gene Fulton big block. We saw some familiar faces with a few new combinations, and some local favorites. It was a great day of drag racing action. Super Stock, A/Gas, B/Gas, C/Gas, H/Gas and A/FX were on hand. Just one week after the famed Indy 500, the IndyCar Series was back at it for another weekend of racing. This time it was at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, which couldn’t be more different than the Indy 500. As a tight street circuit, the Detroit Grand Prix really keeps drivers on their toes. Unfortunately for some of those drivers, the walls on the streets of Detroit tried real hard to jump out and grab them. The racing was hot and heavy, and certainly fun to watch. I love street circuits, as some of the most famous IndyCar and F1 races are street ciruits like Long Beach and Monaco. This is fun racing for sure. When we got the opportunity to work with Pavement Pounder Events last year, we jumped at it because Cole and his crew are great people who were doing great things. So when they announced their Motor City to Wheel Hub Live trip for this year I immediately told them that we wanted to be involved again. Within a day or two, BANGshift contributor extraordinaire, Scott Liggett, said he wanted to go and cover it. I was hoping I’d get to come too, but the scheduling just didn’t work out. Thankfully, we did have Scott on site and he had a great time driving with the group. This is a special event and Pavement Pounder does a great job at curating stops and attractions. So, we packed up and headed to Des Moines, IA to meet up with Pavement Pounder Events group. They were running the Motor City to Wheeel Hub Live trip. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to Des Moines before the Impala’s differential fell apart. We got towed the last 30 miles to our hotel, put it back together and limped it over to Karl Kustoms to have them fix it correctly while we were on the tour. This was an epic weekend at Talladega Super Speedway, and the trucks that showed up were really something special. Whether you are into late models or classics, minis or fullsize rigs, you will dig something at this show. And if you are like us you are going to dig a bunch of things. Check it out if you like custom cars and trucks! Video Description: Wild Weekend at Battle in Bama 2026: If you’ve ever been to Talladega Motor Speedway, you know the place just feels legendary. But this past weekend? It wasn’t NASCAR stock cars tearing up the asphalt—it was the massive Battle in Bama car show and the OBS Nationals, and man, it was one for the books. For me, the weekend was a whirlwind of killer trucks, elite hot rods, a lot of dodging raindrops, and honestly, some of the best times I’ve had in years. If you missed it, here is how it all went down from behind my camera lens. Dodging Raindrops with a Ridler Winner My weekend actually started early on Wednesday. I rolled in ahead of the crowds with a pretty heavy mission: photograph the freshly crowned 2026 Ridler Award winner built by the geniuses over at Kevin Riffey Hotrods. Let me tell you, Mother Nature did not want to cooperate. It was a literal battle against the Alabama rain just to find a five-minute window of dry weather. I’d set up, the skies would open, and we’d scramble. But patience pays off in this game. The sun finally broke through the clouds, and we absolutely knocked the shoot out of the park. Seeing that level of craftsmanship up close is something that makes what I do not feel like a job at all. This year was also a personal milestone for me. I finally brought my 1964 Corvair van to its very first Battle in Bama. I was a little anxious about how the crowd would take it, but the response was incredible. A huge shoutout to the crew at Johnsons Hotrods for letting me park the van right in their booth all weekend—having that kind of support from a legendary shop means the world. Between hanging out at the booth, I managed to sneak away for another bucket-list shoot. I got to photograph Angie Johnson’s Custom Trans Am right on the Talladega track. You might remember this car making waves when it debuted at SEMA last year, but seeing it sitting on the bankings at ‘Dega was next level. And yeah, we had to dodge a few more raindrops to get it done, but the results were pure magic. More Than a Car Show: The Battle in Bama Vibe Aside from those annoying pre-show showers, the weather actually cleared up and turned out beautiful for the main event. The turnout for the OBS Nationals was insane—if you love custom Chevy trucks, this was absolute heaven. But what really struck me about this weekend wasn’t just the sheer number of high-end builds or the famous track. It was the vibe. Honestly, it didn’t even feel like a car show. It felt like a massive family reunion where everyone just happens to own a badass ride. I’ve got to give a massive thank you to Craig Rowley and his entire staff. They put on one hell of an event and went out of their way to help me coordinate a couple of really cool, exclusive photoshoots. Between the trucks, the hot rods, the Corvair love, and hanging out with good people, Battle in Bama 2026 is going to be hard to top. If you are new around there then you might not know that we seriously dig Formula Off-Road racing here at BANGshift.com. This is high flying, loud, and intense racing that involves what look to be impossible hillclimbs, usually on giant courses made from pea gravel or something similar. It’s intense, the cars often end up upside down or rolling over down a hill. They end up rightside up on their own sometimes, but regardless the action is fun and kind of nuts. Shannon is back at the fab work on the FJ40, with the roof and dash coming along, as well as the pedals and steering in a second video. There is a lot more going on as well, but that’s the fab wwork we’re seeing in this one. There is a lot of fabrication going on in this project, so we hope it inspires you to get out there and start cutting and welding something on your ride this week. Shannon and Jess are moving right along on the FJ40 and things just keep getting better. If you like a Landcruiser, you’ll dig this one. The 9th annual Ronnie Buff Memorial featuring King of the South at Shadyside Dragway took place once again over Memorial Day Weekend in what has arguably become the biggest 28×10.5 small-tire shootout in the country. Despite constant rain showers cancelling Saturday’s schedule, King of the South delivered an incredible two rounds of action on Sunday before Mother Nature eventually won out and pots were split between all remaining drivers in King of the South, Knight of the South (26×8.5 tires), and Lil Gangstas. With names like Ryan Martin, Kye Kelley, Scott Taylor, Cory Reed, Todd Spiers, and reigning KOTS champion Larry Larson still among the final 16 when the rain settled in, the race was shaping up to potentially be the biggest King of the South to date. Drag Illustrated contributing photographer Danny Stogner was on the Shadyside property all weekend long, collecting some of the unforgettable moments from a weekend that pushed everyone to their limits – from the drivers competing, to promoter Corey Stamper, to track owners Seth and Zach Buff. Wrapping up the inaugural NHRA Potomac Nationals presented by JEGS at Maryland International Raceway on Sunday, Troy Coughlin Jr. in the JEGS Pro Stock car and Greg Stanfield in the Janac Brothers Racing Pro Stock entry led Elite Motorsports with semi-final finishes. Troy Jr. started the day from the No. 6 qualifying position and handled the JEGS machine past Eric Latino and Kenny Delco before falling short to reigning world champion and eventual runner-up Dallas Glenn. It was a tight side-by-side race. Troy Jr. left the starting line first with a .024-second reaction time to Glenn’s .051 but it was Glenn who reached the starting line first with a 6.492-second pass at 212.16 mph that overtook Troy Jr.’s 6.550 at 210.90. “(Tuners) Kyle Bates, Anthony Lum, Mark Ingersoll, Tim Freeman, Aaron and Greg Stanfield, Chase Freeman, they’re all really putting their heads together, trying to make the best runs that we can make. The progress is great. We’re learning a lot about our car, and these JEGS guys, they work so hard on these cars. (Crew guys) Kelley, and SteveO, Alex, everybody’s really playing their part and doing the best they can. We can’t really ask for results, all we can do is our process and try to make the best run that we possibly can. The car is telling us a story, and we just need to continue to learn its stories, give it what she wants and get after it.” Stanfield entered race day from the No. 1 qualifying position for the first time since 2009. He and the Janac Brother’s car took down Alan Prusiensky and Jeg Coughlin Jr. before meeting race winner Greg Anderson in the semifinals. Stanfield had a slight starting line advantage with a .044-second reaction time to Anderson’s .048. The 6.501-second pass at 212.13 mph from the Janac Brothers car wasn’t enough for Anderson’s 6.488 at 212.53. “I was just off a little bit there today. I started first round and had a grandpa moment I had a grandpa moment. So, um, and sometimes that’s hard to get back into the rhythm of doing it, and I felt good 2nd round, I let it go, just right there. I just I just missed it. So, it’s on me. Go bad for everybody, but cars running great. We had 2 tires with some eyes, so we’re gonna go again here in a few days. Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge winner Aaron Stanfield took the Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage / Melling Performance / Janac Brothers car to the quarterfinals along with Jeg Coughlin Jr. and the JEGS machine. Four-time Top Fuel world champion Antron Brown’s weekend at the inaugural NHRA Potomac Nationals presented by JEGS came to an end in the opening round of eliminations Sunday at Maryland International Dragway. Brown and the Matco Tools team opened qualifying with a solid 3.950-second pass at 312.21 mph despite dropping a cylinder near the finish line. The run placed the Matco Tools Eagle Experience Top Fuel dragster in the provisional No. 9 position. The team improved during the Friday evening qualifying, posting a 3.823-second pass at 329.42 mph to move up to the No. 7 spot. Saturday’s first session also served as the opening round of the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, where Brown faced Leah Pruett in a rematch of their Chicago matchup. Brown held the starting-line advantage with a .073 reaction time to Pruett’s .085, but Pruett drove around him at the finish line with a 3.811-second run to Brown’s 3.848. In the final qualifying session, Brown’s dragster encountered tire smoke around half-track, preventing any improvement on the leaderboard. The NHRA Top 75 driver ultimately secured the No. 9 qualifying position and a first-round matchup against Justin Ashley. Prior to eliminations, Brown and Ashley were featured as the NHRA’s marquee matchup. Both drivers are widely regarded as among the best on the starting line, and Brown jokingly noted during pre-race festivities that while Ashley’s sponsor, Scag Power Equipment, is known for mowing grass, “I’m one tough weed.” The two standout leavers delivered another competitive race in the opening round. Ashley gained the starting-line advantage with a .036 reaction time to Brown’s .057. Brown’s Matco Tools machine began losing traction around half-track, forcing him to pedal the car, while Ashley encountered tire spin near the finish line. Despite Brown’s efforts, Ashley reached the stripe first with a 3.995-second pass at 276.52 mph to Brown’s 4.030 at 283.85 mph. “The race track did a great job. It showed out. The fans came out, and I’ll tell you what, this is a close thing for a hometown race, so this race is real special,” Brown said. “I’m just really bummed that we went out first round, but we’ll be back next year, and we’ll get after it. “I loved the feel of it, and can’t wait to come back. Three-time NHRA Funny Car world champion Ron Capps entered the inaugural NHRA Potomac Nationals tied for the points lead with J.R. Todd after capturing two wins in three final rounds in the first six races of the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season. By reaching the semifinal round Sunday at Maryland International Raceway, Capps became the sole points leader in his NAPA Auto Care Funny Car at the first of three back-to-back-to-back races. Qualifying was a learning experience for Capps and his team led by crew chief Dean ‘Guido’ Antonelli as they developed data and a tune-up for the historic track, which is one of four new tracks on the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Series schedule. Capps lost traction on his first qualifying pass, but rebounded with a 4.050-second pass in the second session to move up a spot to No. 11. On Saturday, Capps spun the tires down-track in the third session before throwing down a 4.024 E.T. at 321.65 mph in the final session to gain another spot on the qualifying order. Racing out of the No. 10 slot on the ladder, Capps squared off against Alexis DeJoria in round one of eliminations on Sunday. He led the race from start to finish, winning with a weekend-best 4.001 E.T. at 321.12 mph to DeJoria’s 4.009 E.T. Capps and second-round opponent Cruz Pedregon left the starting line together and they both encountered issues, but Capps fought his way to a 4.255-second pass to hold off Pedregon. In the semifinals, Capps powered to his second-quickest run of the event, a 4.014 E.T. at 320.28 mph, but he came up a bit short to defending world champion Austin Prock and his 3.998 E.T. “This was one of those weekends we talk about throughout championships that are just gut-check weekends,” said Capps, who earned a spot in the next Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge with his semifinal finish. “We didn’t start qualifying very well. I felt like I drove terribly on Friday and let the car get out of the groove a little bit, and I think that would have given us a pretty good qualifying spot. Ultimately, we didn’t have lane choice. We qualified in the bottom half of the field, but our NAPA Auto Care team just kept plugging away and Guido kept working at it. “This track was so much fun with all these fans,” added Capps, a two-time No. 1 qualifier this season. “We had a lot of fans that used to come to Maple Grove or Richmond or Englishtown, so they were very thankful we’re here. I can’t wait to come back. With that being said, there’s just a lot of character at this racetrack. It’s very demanding as a driver. You’ve got to really be on your game, and I think Guido and the guys did a fantastic job.” The pursuit of a fourth world championship for Capps and his Ron Capps Motorsports team will continue in just a few days at the NHRA New England Nationals, June 5-7, at New England Dragway in Epping, N.H. If there was any doubt that the Locked-In Series has become one of the West Coast’s must-see heads-up racing programs, Round 2 at Famoso Dragstrip put those questions to rest. Under near-perfect weather conditions and on a well-prepared racing surface that stayed glued up throughout the event, racers delivered a full day of hard-fought battles during another exciting chapter of Locked-In competition at Famoso Dragstrip. The action was intense from the opening round to the final win light as competitors pushed for every advantage in pursuit of Locked-In Series glory. When the racing concluded, Kendall Kuhns stood tall in Bracket No Box competition while Michael Teske earned a Locked-In Series victory. Chico Coleman captured the Outlaw Small Tire win, while Ron McCoy claimed top honors in N/A 10.5 competition. Marco Contreras drove to the Truck victory, but one of the weekend’s most popular winners came in Real Steel, where Eric Outland piloted the fan-favorite “Darth Vader” machine to the winner’s circle. Additional winners included Nicola DiLiso in 5.80 Index, Roy Mauvais in 6.50 Index and Eddie Rios in Modern Muscle. Robert Cunningham turned in a strong performance to finish runner-up in the 5.35 Index category. As the Locked-In Series continues to build momentum, Famoso Dragstrip now shifts its attention to the ANRA Spring Nationals, June 5-7. The three-day nostalgia drag racing event will feature A/Gas through E/Gas competition, Nostalgia Eliminators, Hot Rod, Open Wheel and Junior Dragster racing. Competitors from throughout the region will converge on the legendary Bakersfield quarter-mile for a weekend celebrating drag racing’s heritage while battling for ANRA Spring Nationals honors. Jack Beckman and John Force Racing’s PEAK Chevrolet SS Funny Car team qualified first and set low elapsed time of the meet in eliminations but came up short in the final round of the inaugural NHRA Potomac Nationals at Maryland International Raceway. Beckman, who earned his 35th No. 1 qualifier the day before and set low elapsed time of the event in the semifinals (3.923 seconds), ran 3.971 seconds at 323.50 mph in the final round but it wasn’t enough to get around Austin Prock’s run of 3.958 seconds at 324.20 mph. Jordan Vandergriff and the Cornwell Tools Chevrolet SS Funny Car team rebounded well from their first-round exit two weeks ago at Chicago with the semifinal finish against Beckman. Josh Hart and Alexis DeJoria, who both qualified seventh in Top Fuel and Funny Car, respectively, were eliminated in the first round. The runner-up finish was Beckman’s 78th career Funny Car final round appearance (10th for John Force Racing) and second final round appearance this season after finishing runner-up at the 4-Wide Nationals at Charlotte. “Charlotte was our first ‘runner-up’ of the year but I still didn’t think we had jumped that final hurdle to get back to where we needed to be,” said Beckman. “I just didn’t think our season had turned fully in the right direction. It did here. We made eight good runs. We should have been more aggressive in the final. We went out there and ran low ET of the meet in the semifinals. We didn’t want to push any harder. I think the track came to us but it kind of ate up our tuneup. We can kick ourselves all day long but we got outrun by a great run in the other lane.” It was John Force Racing’s sixth final round appearance of the season. In addition to Beckman’s pair, Hart won at the season-opener in Gainesville, Vandergriff earned his career first Funny Car event win at South Georgia, and Alexis DeJoria finished runner-up at both Gainesville and Chicago. “We have two more races in the next two weeks. I’ve been asked if I like these back-to-back to back races,” said Beckman. “I like them now because our hot rod’s back. Every call Dan and Tim (crew chiefs Hood and Fabrisi) made, the car responded. Before you can win races, you have to run consistently before you can run consistently quick. Our car’s doing what we ask it to do now.” In round one, Beckman dispatched of No. 16 qualifier Joe Morrison with the second-quickest run of the event to that point, covering the 1,000-foot racing surface in 3.939 seconds at 324.69 mph to Morrison’s 5.027 seconds at 161.23 mph. The PEAK SQUAD then eliminated J.R. Todd in round two with a run of 4.003 seconds at 324.05 mph to Todd’s 4.018 seconds at 311.41 mph, setting up the semifinal showdown with Vandergriff. In the all-John Force Racing semifinal, Vandergriff had lane choice, but Beckman grabbed the holeshot (.076 to .081) and never looked back, running 3.923 seconds at 328.22 mph to Vandergriff’s 4.122 seconds at 250.83 mph. “I don’t think anybody was going to beat Jack Beckman in the PEAK car that round,” said Vandergriff. “He went low ET of the entire race that round. It was a great weekend for this Cornwell Quality Tools team, a great bounce back weekend after what happened in Chicago. Coming here and going to the semifinals is exactly what we needed as a team to carry momentum into these next two back-to-back races.” Vandergriff dispatched first-round opponent Dave Richards with a run of 3.988 seconds at 322.27 mph to Richards’ 14.327 seconds at 64.45 mph. The Cornwell Tools team then earned the trip to the semifinals and lane choice against Beckman with a second-round win over Chad Green, running 3.996 seconds at 324.98 mph to Green’s 4.008 seconds at 321.81 mph. Vandergriff earned lane choice over Beckman by seven thousandths of a second for the semifinal matchup. Hart, the No. 7 qualifier in Top Fuel, lined up against No. 10 qualifier Clay Millican in round one. They left just four-thousandths-of-a-second apart (Hart’s .065 to Millican’s .061) and Hart was just ahead past halftrack before the Speedmaster Top Fuel Dragster lost traction and spun the tires. Hart slowed to a run of 4.026 seconds at 268.92 mph to Millican’s 3.823 seconds at 330.39 mph. “Well, that’s why they call it racing, not winning,” said Hart. “The car was dancing around really, really good at the top end. I knew it was spinning but kept my foot in it trying to get down the track. I knew we were out on him there for a little bit…until we weren’t. For the Speedmaster team and John Force Racing, I’m really grateful just to even be in this seat so we’ll regather our thoughts. We’ve been working at it, round by round, and we’ll get it figured out. I appreciate everybody.” DeJoria was the No. 7 qualifier in Funny Car, giving the Bandero Café Chevrolet SS Funny Car team lane choice in round one against No. 10 qualifier Ron Capps. She ran the sixth-quickest run of the round, 4.009 seconds at 326.56 mph, but wasn’t enough to get around the fifth-quickest run of the round, Capps’ 4.001 seconds at 321.12 mph. “I am extremely proud of the Bandero Nitro Funny Car team,” said DeJoria. “I have never driven a better race car. They just drive so well and Neff (Mike Neff, crew chief) and Jonnie (Jonnie Lindberg, co-crew chief) are getting a great handle on it. I love this track. It’s beautiful. We made some good runs this week so we’re progressing. We’re getting better and we just need to get a little bit faster. We got five bonus points in qualifying so that helps. We have Epping and Bristol the next two weeks, so we don’t have much time in between, which I love, especially after going out first round, I want to get right back in that race car.” The eighth of 20 races of the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series is the June 5-7 New England Nationals presented by bproauto at New England Dragway in Epping, N.H.
