After a rocky start to the season, reigning Funny Car world champion Austin Prock earned his first victory of the year when he won the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge on Saturday at Maryland International Raceway. With momentum on his side, he is looking to claim his first win of 2026 at the inaugural NHRA Potomac Nationals presented by JEGS. Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel), Aaron Stanfield (Pro Stock) and Angie Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also won the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, while Langdon (Top Fuel), Beckman (Funny Car), Greg Stanfield (Pro Stock) and Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) all qualified No. 1 at the seventh of 20 races during the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season. Prock, driver of the PPG Ford Mustang, has dominated the Funny Car category for the last two seasons, earning 18 race wins throughout 2024 and 2025. This year he has seen major struggles, including not qualifying for the season opener in Gainesville. With his Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge win on Saturday, it gives Prock and his team some confidence for race day on Sunday. “It feels great,” said Prock. “It’s been a long time, and feels good. We’ve had a decent car all weekend, and good enough to win the Mission #2Fast2Tasty race today. We’ve got a lot of work to do still, but the race cars going up and down the race track, and giving me opportunity to get comfortable in this Ford, and practice chopping down the Christmas Tree. “I’m proud of what we’ve done so far. We’re going to be hard at it tonight, and we’re going to have a fast ‘Prock Rocket’ in the morning. I can guarantee that.” Prock defeated four-time world champion Matt Hagan in the final round of the Mission Challenge. The two will meet up again tomorrow during the opening round of eliminations on race day. Jack Beckman claimed the Funny Car No. 1 qualifier spot in the third qualifying session when he powered to a 3.935-second pass at 326.79 mph, earning his second consecutive No. 1 of the year, in his PEAK Chevrolet SS Funny Car. He will be aiming for his first win of the 2026 season and 38th overall. “It’s no secret, we’ve been stumbling a little bit with the Peak car and we haven’t been ourselves like last year, when our car could do no wrong. We’re just kind of struggling this year, but it’s because we did some things to try to be quicker, and a lot of times that step backwards takes a while before you recuperate from that, but to know that every dart we’re throwing is hitting near the bullseye means we could make good tune-up calls for tomorrow. This is one of those Saturdays where I’m counting down the hours till the national anthem. I can’t wait to get back out here tomorrow.” Former world champion Cruz Pedregon took the No. 2 position with his 3.951 at 323.19 while 2025 Rookie of the Year Spencer Hyde rounded out the top three with his 3.952 at 323.58. Shawn Langdon continued to dominate the field in his 12,000-horsepower Kalitta Air on Saturday when he won the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, as well as claimed his third No. 1 qualifier of the season. Langdon clocked a 3.744 at 336.23, to win the Mission Challenge over Leah Pruett and secure his 25th career No. 1 qualifier, improving on his previous low qualifier from Friday. With four wins on the season, Langdon feels confident in the car’s performance and his team’s ability. “It feels great to have such a strong running car,” said Langdon. “I think the best thing is that Brian [Husen, crew chief] was trying to go 3.74 before that run. He had said if everything goes right, maybe a high .73 on the slow side, maybe a .75 and we went right in the middle at .74 so he’s just got a really good handle on the car. He’s doing such a great job, and his gut instincts are really being showcased right now. He’s just making the right decisions.” Langdon’s low qualifier position will give him a bye round in the opening round of eliminations. Reigning Top Fuel champion Doug Kalitta landed in the No. 2 spot with his 3.771 at 333.00 while Pruett was third with her 3.771 at 331.12. The Stanfield family of Elite Motorsports claimed Pro Stock honors on Saturday with Aaron Stanfield earning the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge while Greg Stanfield earned the No. 1 qualifier position. A. Stanfield, who won two weeks ago in Chicago, defeated six-time world champion Greg Anderson in the Challenge final in his Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage / Melling Performance / Janac Brothers Racing Pro Stock car, giving him his first Mission win of the season. “It definitely feels good to beat Greg Anderson on a hole shot,” said A. Stanfield. “I think if we’re close enough to him, we’re going to have that opportunity. So, I look forward to some more of it, and I’m going to try to stay on my A game. “I think our whole Elite group has some momentum, and for sure it feels good to be turning on some win lights, especially against those KB Titan Racing guys. They’ve been tough to beat here lately, and it’s been nice to have some momentum rolling our way. I think everybody’s able to take a little bit of a breath, but I can promise you they’re not satisfied. I think we still got a little way to go, and they’re just keeping on working, and there’s no quitting in them and I’m right there, and we’re going to keep pushing.” A. Stanfield qualified tenth and will race Cody Anderson in the first round of eliminations. It was G. Stanfield who took the top Pro Stock spot with his 6.482 at 212.39 mph in the Janac Brothers Racing Pro Stock car. It gave G. Stanfield his first No. 1 since 2009. “It feels great to have a No. 1,” said G. Stanfield. “It’s just testament to all the hard work the Elite Motorsports guys have put in to get these cars faster, and we’re just the lucky ones to get to drive, so it feels good to do it. I’ll feel better if I can hold that big Wally tomorrow.” Reigning world champion Dallas Glenn took the second position with a 6.486 at 211.73 mph while Eric Latino finished third with a 6.493 at 211.30. With her husband, six-time world champion Matt Smith, hospitalized on Friday morning and unable to race this weekend, Angie Smith is leading the way for the Matt Smith Racing in a big way in Maryland. She scooped up both the No. 1 qualifier position at the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge on her Denso Auto Parts Buell and she has her sights set to a win on Sunday. “I know Matt wanted this more than anything, and I wanted it more than anything,” said A. Smith. “It’s been two years since I’ve won one of these Mission Challenges, so I really needed to win it, and we got it done today. Hats off to Matt and to my entire crew. “Everybody on my crew has stepped up, and they have done jobs that they have never done before, and I couldn’t do it without every single person at that trailer, and I couldn’t do it without Matt, sitting in a hospital bed. He’s making good calls, but our MVP is down right now, but there is rumor that he might be at the track tomorrow, so we’ll see.” A. Smith’s 6.690 at 202.97 gave her, her third No. 1 qualifier of the season. She will be on the hunt for her fourth career win on Sunday. Reigning world champion Richard Gadson finished second with a 6.729 at 201.31 with John Hall in third with his 6.739 at 201.91. NHRA officials announced a sellout on Saturday for its debut at Maryland International Raceway for the inaugural NHRA Potomac Nationals presented by JEGS. The race marked the second visit to four new facilities during NHRA’s 75th anniversary season. Fans packed the grandstands of Maryland International Raceway at the seventh event of the 2026 NHRA season at the second day of qualifying at the NHRA Potomac Nationals presented by JEGS. “I have to say a special thanks to every one of y’all in the stands,” said Royce Miller, owner of Maryland International Raceway. “I knew you would show up if we brought it here, you are the reason we do this. We love you, we appreciate you very much, and we’ve got great things to come. Coming off back-to-back Top Fuel wins, points leader Shawn Langdon made the quickest run on Friday in NHRA’s debut at Maryland International Raceway, powering to the provisional No. 1 position at the inaugural NHRA Potomac Nationals presented by JEGS. Cruz Pedregon (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Angie Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are also the provisional No. 1 qualifiers at the seventh of 20 races during the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season. Langdon, who already has three wins in 2026, went 3.758-seconds at 336.23 mph in his 12,000-horsepower Kalitta Air dragster, putting on a remarkable show in his first appearance at the facility. The past world champion is after his third No. 1 qualifier of the year and 25th in his career as he continues to enjoy a spectacular start to NHRA’s 75th anniversary season. “We didn’t think we could make that kind of run here today,” Langdon said. “We actually underestimated the track on the first run, and so Brian [Husen, crew chief] realized he could get after it a little more and we were able to take the No. 1 from Doug. This is just such a great team effort from everyone at Kalitta Motorsports, starting with Connie, and I’m just proud to be able to drive the car. “Tomorrow, we’ll just have the kind of mindset that we had today. Just try to make some good runs, but also win the Mission #2fast2Tasty Challenge, too.” Langdon’s Kalitta Motorsports teammate, reigning world champion Doug Kalitta, is second going a 3.774 at 333.91 as part of the thrilling side-by-side run with Langdon. Tony Stewart is third thanks to his 3.790 at 333.33. In Funny Car, Cruz Pedregon hopes Friday marks the turnaround of his season, as the two-time world champion vaulted to the top in his 12,000-horsepower Snap-on America 250 Dodge Hellcat with a strong pass of 3.951 at 323.19. The veteran has endured his share of struggles early this season, not qualifying in Pomona and failing to make it out of the first round at the first six races. But he’s qualified well the last two races and Friday marked another solid step forward as Pedregon looks to qualify No. 1 for the first time this season and 66th time in his stellar career. “That probably won’t stay No. 1. I think there’s a .92 or (.93) out there, and we’re going to give it a shot tomorrow,” Pedregon said. “It’d be nice to stay No. 1. It doesn’t win the race, but it gives you some confidence. We’re in the numbers game, so you know, being in that top three or four is important. “The thing about this place, it’s near the ocean. Anytime you get near the ocean at sea level, you’re going to get good atmospheric conditions. The challenge for our cars is we have more power than we really need, so the challenge for us is to pull it back and not get too fancy and cute. We had a good balance, and it ripped, man. It was a good run.” Spencer Hyde, the reigning NHRA Rookie of the Year, is second with a 3.953 at 323.58 and Valdosta winner Jordan Vandergriff is currently third thanks to a 3.970 at 321.88. Pro Stock’s Greg Anderson wasted no time in sending a message at Maryland International Raceway, dipping into the 6.40s and taking the provisional top spot with a run of 6.494 at 211.79 in his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro. Anderson entered the weekend second in points following a runner-up showing in Chicago, but he’s hoping for a better result at this new track on the NHRA schedule than the first one of the year. The six-time champ qualified No. 1 in Valdosta but was upset on a massive holeshot in the opening round, something he’s eager not to replicate this weekend at Maryland International Raceway. “I remember so many times coming here back 25 years ago when I worked with Warren Johnson as a crew chief, and we’d come up here and we would race the Wednesday night before Englishtown and the grandstands would be packed, so it’s just a great atmosphere,” Anderson said. “We love going to sea-level type tracks, because we don’t have a blower, we don’t have any type of power. We’re dependent on Mother Nature. So, we hope and pray we get races somewhere through the season that have conditions like this. These are fantastic conditions; they’re basically Disneyland conditions and you’ll see the cars all run faster tomorrow. You should see a lot of 6.40 runs tomorrow.” Points leader Dallas Glenn pulled close to Anderson, going 6.497 at 211.26 and Matt Latino is third after a pass of 6.504 at 212.56. On an emotional day for Pro Stock Motorcycle’s Angie Smith, the talented veteran made the quickest run of the day as she continues to impress in qualifying, going a career-best 6.690 at 202.97 on her Denso Auto Parts Buell. Her husband, six-time world champion Matt Smith, was hospitalized Friday morning and will be unable to race this weekend. Chip Ellis will be riding his bike, but with M. Smith urging on the team – and still making tuning calls – his wife put together a standout pass as she looks for her third No. 1 qualifier of the season. She’s also coming off a heartbreaking final round in Chicago against her husband when her bike broke on the starting line. It’s made for a rollercoaster of emotions in recent days, but Smith was proud of how the team handled everything on Friday. “My run was awesome. I cried. I don’t usually cry at the racetrack because I’m usually pretty tough, but I was just scared, you know? I have made probably 5,000 runs down a racetrack, and zero have been without Matt Smith,” Smith said. “I knew he was watching, I’m pretty sure he was proud. Matt tuning from the hospital is pretty remarkable to me, because he’s not here to look at the weather conditions, look at the track and do a lot of the things that he takes into account when he makes a tune-up call. So all I can say is, ‘Honey, you did a remarkable job.’ “I’m relieved, to say the least. It’s just been a lot the last 24 hours and this whole day has been a blur. I’m just glad that we ran well. I’m glad that all the bikes went down and everybody was safe. That was my main goal. I’ve never had this much responsibility, and the whole team rose to the occasion.” Points leader Richard Gadson is in the second spot after a run of 6.729 at 201.31 and filling in for M. Paige Coughlin has spent years forging her own path in drag racing, a sport synonymous with her family’s name. But this weekend at US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan, Coughlin is fulfilling a lifelong dream – competing in Pro Mod – at the Shakedown at M’Town with the Mid-West Drag Racing Series. Coughlin grew up bracket racing in classes like Super Comp and Top Dragster, then stepped into the world of No Prep Kings with her 3rd-Gen Camaro named “Golden Child.” When NPK ended, she soon found a new opportunity in a familiar place – the NHRA, which debuted a new Outlaw Street class at four national events this year. “At the beginning of the season, we were just trying to figure out what we were gonna do,” admits Coughlin. “The Outlaw Street stuff came up, and we’re like, ‘Yeah, let’s give that a try, see how it goes.’ It was fun to kind of mix those two worlds together, especially with my family coming from the NHRA, and I’ve been the only one to kind of change it up a little bit.” What Paige didn’t know was that her father – three-time NHRA Pro Mod world champion Troy Coughlin Sr. – was working behind the scenes to set up a partnership with 2025/26 Drag Illustrated Winter Series points champion Peter Norton and his Hurricane Motorsports team, allowing Paige to pilot Norton’s 2024 Camaro tuned by Rickie Jones. Since learning of the deal roughly a week ago, it’s been a whirlwind getting everything ready to race this weekend. “This Pro Modified deal just came up super last minute, and I’ve been struggling to find the words to describe how all of this feels,” Coughlin says. “It’s been my dream to run Pro Modified in any way, shape, or form. My dad was a three-time NHRA Pro Modified champ, and I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I want to be just like him. When this came up, I was like, ‘Holy crap. All right, let’s go.’” “Between my dad, Hurricane Motorsports, ProLine…we all just kind of put this together,” adds Coughlin. “We drove up from Florida, grabbed all my safety stuff in Ohio, beat on over to Indiana, poured the seat, then drove here (to US 131 Motorsports Park). It’s been a lot of work trying to get all of that work done in such a short time frame to make this race. It doesn’t even feel real. I don’t know how long they’ve been talking about it, but when I found out it was like Christmas.” Coughlin also admits to feeling a bit guilty about having a “total fangirl moment” when she found out the news, as her family was having dinner to celebrate her husband Johnny Tolisano’s birthday. But the opportunity to fulfill her dream has quickly paid off. Between pre-race testing and the first qualifying session Thursday night, Coughlin laid down multiple career-best numbers. After Q1, she sits in the No. 9 spot with a 3.603 at 211.57 mph. Qualifying for the Shakedown at M’Town continues Friday night and Saturday morning, with eliminations to follow. Coughlin’s goal is to dip into the 3.50’s and then go from there. But regardless of how things play out, she knows she’s exactly where she’s supposed to be – behind the wheel of a Pro Mod. “This feeling of being in a Pro Modified car, it’s so hard to top that,” Coughlin says. “I’ll always have a special spot for all the other cars I’ve raced, like ‘Golden Child’. That was the first door car I ever drove. I still hold that near and dear to my heart. And my dragster I ran in Super Comp and bracket racing, that’s where I started. That’s where my family’s from, those are our roots, and you can’t forget those. Andy Robinson and the Anger Management Pro Mod team, fresh off the heels of a successful weekend at the Doorslammers event, scored yet another final-round appearance at the recent FIA Main Event, at Santa Pod Raceway. The event started with a race within a race, the Carl Cox Motorsport series. This is a 5.90 index, all cars run, Aussie-style format race with a points system that sets up the final rounds. Many different combos entered, including screw blowers, roots blowers, turbochargers, 2JZ import cars, nitrous cars and a sole Procharger-equipped entry belonging to superstar DJ Carl Cox and driven by American Mikey Rees. The UK-based Anger Management team ran a strong 5.91 at 246 mph off the trailer which was good enough for No. 1 qualifier and put together a string of low 5.90 runs with the one exception being a 6.02, winning every round and placing Robinson into the B final, which he won with a 5.94. Slowing a fully-fledged FIA Pro Mod car down to 5.90 is not the easiest thing to do; the team opted to tame the combination up to 250’, slowing the 330’ by around 5-6 hundredths, and then adding fuel and subtracting timing in the last eighth to keep the motor rich and safe. “I figured if we could slow the car down to about 2.63-2.65 to 330’, that would reduce the possibility of tire shake and knock enough performance out of it to achieve a 5.90 quarter-mile e.t.,” car chief Luke Robinson remarked. Getting back to normal levels of performance in time for qualifying in FIA Pro Mod seemed the bigger challenge, but the team persevered with a 5.86 at 246 mph, good enough for the No. 5 spot. An unusual heat wave hit the UK over the weekend, with temperatures of 93 Fahrenheit proving a challenge for both drivers and teams. The Santa Pod track surface scorched to over 124 degrees, which is seldom seen. The morning session remained relatively cool, with Robinson taking the first-round win with a 5.87 against Bruno Bader, but as the day went on and the temperatures increased, the team drew on data from the Carl Cox series to slow the car down and maintain traction in the early part of the run. This worked flawlessly, and Robinson earned his place in the finals against old adversary Andres Arnover from Estonia. Arnover had the edge on Robinson in the final, his 5.94 besting Robinson’s 5.97, although the race was won on the line with a rare red light from Andy. However, this marked the end of an extremely successful 10 days of racing for the Anger Management team, with 3 final-round appearances and proving the team’s ability to adapt and overcome. This weekend marks a special opportunity for Pro Stock Motorcycle’s Kelly Clontz and she’s determined to make the most of it as the NHRA Mission Drag Racing Series makes its debut at Maryland International Raceway for the inaugural NHRA Potomac Nationals presented by JEGS. Clontz, a Hughesville, Md. native, got her racing start at the facility, winning track championships and advancing her career. But this weekend is the first time she’ll compete at the track on her Steamfitters UA Local 602/ArchKey Solutions Suzuki in Pro Stock Motorcycle, meaning the excitement level is at an all-time high for the veteran rider. With hundreds of family and friends expected to be on hand for this weekend’s NHRA debut at Maryland International Raceway, Clontz is eager to show off a facility that means a great deal to her. “This facility has always been top-notch and I think everyone is excited about this weekend,” Clontz said. “You could see the energy building up ever since the announcement was made that NHRA was coming here. Everyone is excited and I think everyone is in for a treat. “I grew up selling t-shirts at the souvenir stand here. Royce (Miller, owner of Maryland International Raceway) runs a top-notch deal. I grew up with his kids at the track and this is just awesome to see. I think it’s a great fit between NHRA and MIR, and it’s going to be a really amazing weekend.” The 2026 NHRA Potomac Nationals presented by JEGS includes action in all four Mission Foods Drag Racing Series classes and coverage of the event will be broadcast on FOX, with elimination coverage beginning at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 31. It is also the seventh of 20 races during the 2026 milestone campaign. As part of a full weekend, there’s a host of NHRA 75th anniversary events at Maryland International Raceway, including: An appearance from NHRA legend and three-time Top Fuel world champion Shirley Muldowney and a tribute to Muldowney’s trailblazing history in the sport. On Sunday, a free, limited-edition NHRA pennant will be given to the first 4,000 fans in attendance. As someone who has made a huge number of runs at the facility, Clontz also knows it’s a passionate fanbase in the area, especially when it comes to motorcycles. That adds to her excitement level as she looks forward to the enthusiasm the Pro Stock Motorcycle category will get this weekend at MIR. In between playing host and showing off the facility, Clontz is ultra-focused on the task at hand on the track. She’s hoping for a breakout performance after making solid steps all year on her Vance & Hines Suzuki. The ultimate payoff would be going rounds on Sunday at her home track, but she knows it will be a challenging weekend taking on the likes of points leader and reigning world champ Richard Gadson, Gaige Herrera, Angie Smith, Chase Van Sant, John Hall, Jianna Evaristo, Clayton Howey and Steve Johnson. But Clontz and her husband, Chris, have a bike capable of performing well and Clontz is confident they can put together a strong weekend. “Chris gives me a great bike and it’s just a matter of me being consistent and staying focused,” Clontz said. “For all the people who support us, this is just really cool to have this opportunity. It’s going to be big and a whole community here. I know what I have to do and I’m on a mission to do it. That’s what you have to do. Having all these people here to support me, it’s going to be exciting, but I know what I need to do and I’ll be ready.” Top Fuel points leader Shawn Langdon is after his third straight win in 2026 and will look to stay red-hot against a field loaded with standouts, including teammate and reigning world champ Doug Kalitta, Tony Stewart, Leah Pruett, Justin Ashley, four-time champ Antron Brown, Josh Hart, Clay Millican and Tony Schumacher. The Funny Car class continues to be ultra-competitive, with Ron Capps earning two wins in 2026. He’s tied for the points lead with past world champ J.R. Todd, with four-time champion Matt Hagan in third. Other standouts include Chicago winner Chad Green, Jordan Vandergriff, Alexis DeJoria, Jack Beckman and Spencer Hyde. Reigning Pro Stock champ Dallas Glenn currently leads the points with two wins in 2026. Matt Hartford also has two victories this year, while six-time world champ Greg Anderson picked up the win in Pomona. Fans at MIR will also see six-time champion Erica Enders, Chicago winner Aaron Stanfield, Jeg Coughlin Jr. and T.J. Coughlin. NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series qualifying will feature two rounds at 1:30 and 4 p.m. ET on Friday and the final two rounds of qualifying on Saturday at 12:30 and 3 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m. ET on Sunday. Television coverage includes qualifying on FS1 at 7 p.m. ET on Friday and 9 p.m. ET on Saturday, with eliminations action on Sunday at 3 p.m on FOX. Eric LaFerriere and Duy Bui have dominated six-cylinder performance standards on 275mm rear tires for several seasons, but the duo shocked the sport with three amazing blasts from their seldom-seen 2020 Lexus LC500 in outlaw doorslammer trim which culminated in a staggering 5.448-second, 266.11 mph quarter-mile attempt using Toyota 2JZ power, which obliterated every six-cylinder record in drag racing. Rhode Islander Eric and Texas resident Duy (pronounced “Dewey”) won the 2025 HalTech World Cup Finals at Maryland International Raceway in the debut of their white “Sake Bomb” Lexus. The car was specifically designed to break the all-time six-cylinder quarter-mile records held by Jesus Melendez in Rafael Famania’s 2020 Toyota Corolla since November 2023, (5.546 at 264.49 mph), and the eighth-mile marks of Melendez (3.677 from 2023), and Arnaldo Santiago in a 2018 Scion FRS (210.21 mph) back in October 2010. The team took their machine to the Shakedown XXIII at M’Town meet at US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan, a combination event which includes Donald Long’s Radial Outlaw Racing Series, (RORS), and the Mid-West Drag Racing Series’ Pro Modified tour, both eighth-mile programs. In good, but not spectacular, 2200-feet “air” and on a meticulously prepared track, LaFerriere opened on Wednesday, May 27, with a stunning 3.691 at 210.58 mph to steal the seven-year-old speed mark from Santiago. A late morning run on Thursday, May 28, dropped jaws. LaFerriere wiped out both eighth-mile standards on a magnificent 3.648/213.57 record-setter. At that point, Eric and Duy asked the track operator Jason Peterson, and RORS promoter Long if, at the end of the day’s qualifying, they could make a full quarter-mile attempt in the “Sake Bomb.” The facility agreed. During the evening qualifying session, at 9:49 p.m. EDT, LaFerriere launched the nearly silent six-cylinder to an astonishing 0.949-second sixty-feet elapsed time followed by an amazing 3.630/215.00 eighth-mile clocking. The car continued to a mind-numbing 4.61-second 1000-feet ET at an unheard-of 249.17 mph and ripped across the quarter-mile finish line with an unfathomable 5.448 at 266.11 mph. While the rest of the assemblage was reeling in shock, LaFerriere stated he honestly thought the car could be the fourteenth passenger car to run under 5.50 seconds in the quarter mile. “We kept it kind of conservative just to make sure it made a full run,” said LaFerriere in the pit area, “but I swear, I thought it would go a mid-to-low ‘forty’. We know now it can go in the five-thirties.” The accomplishment has only been known by a few, but until now, never with less than eight cylinders. The car’s drivetrain is based on the fabled inline six-cylinder 2JZ Toyota which has owned six-cylinder drag racing for several decades. The engine uses a billet block, but a stock Toyota cast cylinder head with all GSC Power Division valvetrain components. It’s also equipped with an Innovators West harmonic balancer. With a single 111mm “Next Gen” Precision Turbocharger, a Liberty six-speed transmission with a QuickDrive converter drive coupled to an M&M Converter and Hoosier 36-inch slicks, the 5.44/266 effort was as smooth as glass. The run brought drag racing to a new crossroads. Wes Buck, Drag Illustrated Founder and promoter of the DI Winter Series and World Series of Pro Mod, expressed interest in the “Sake Bomb” when it first appeared last fall. Now, however, the car’s 3.63 eighth-mile performance is within range of the World’s Quickest Pro Mod Series numbers and Buck immediately stated he will be working on rules revisions which allow this “Bomb” to compete with the quickest and fastest Pro Modifieds on the planet next winter. As of this report, the Bui-owned 2020 Lexus LC500 is the seventh quickest turbocharged doorslammer ever regardless of engine design and is currently the tenth quickest passenger car of all time. (Words and Photos by Scott Liggett) We came out to hang with Cole Quinnell and his event Pavement Pounder’s Motor City to Wheel Hub Live about one minute after we got our ’65 Impala SS back together. We met up with the Pavement Pounders in Des Moines and cruised with them to Museum of Speed in Lincoln, NE. That’s where Wheel Hub Magazine’s Live Event was happening. And boy was it a happening! What does all that mean? Wheel Hub is a fantastic new magazine that covers the highest quality built custom cars and trucks being built today. And, they had a ton of their magazine’s recent feature cars at Speedway Motor’s Museum of Speed showing the new 30,000 square foot expansion. Wheel Hub also got those million dollar builds out of the museum for a 200 mile reliability run rain or shine. And, rained it did. Not 5 minutes after we left the parking lot at Speedway we got hit with a down pour. That alone proved those high dollar builds are more than just pretty garage queens. We cruised from Lincoln to Omaha stopping at the Strategic Air Command’s Aerospace Museum, Victory Lane’s Private Automotive Enthusiast Community, Cal Creations and No Coast Customs.
